A:M Forum Rules

-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I may get a little long winded, so please feel free to move on to a more interesting post. I was a child in the 50's, watching Lassie and the Beaver in first run in black and white. My dad had one of the very first remote controls: Me. In Junior High in the early 60's I explored Time and Space with Heinlein, Asimov, and Van Vogt. I went to my first concert in 1965. The Beatles played the Memorial Coliseum here in Portland Oregon. In the late 60's I explored Time and Space in a different manner, and from the few high points I remember, I had a pretty good time. Pong became a sensation and "Asteriods" became astronimical entertainment at a quarter a pop. …

A few days back I was advised to obtain the setup machine for use with my simple models. I did this and have spent a few days trying to install the rig into the model. .. with not a lot of luck. I follow the tutorial through steadily and get all the way through to the point of installing the final rig. That process goes through but, when I try to use the result, there is an error listed in the PWS, "Error Loading String 5003" When I try to use the figure in an action the cp's in the mesh don't seem to be affected by the bones so that, for example, when I move the bones in the arm the mesh just stays in the standard T position. When the pelvis is moved, l…

Hi folks, I'm trying to install A:M 15.0c on my Intel MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.3. I have the yearly subscription version. After install, when I try to open one of the tutorial projects, say, the flag tutorial, I get a message about 'Missing image IO plugin for 'BetsyRoss.bmp'. I checked the Image IO plugins folder preference and it looks okay, with the exception that the capitalization of the path was off. The path that was set ended in 'ImageIOs'. The path on install was 'ImageIOS'. So I corrected the path and restarted A:M and then I was getting 'Cannot load 'TGA.iio' or something like that. This is very odd behavior. This is a fresh install of Mac OS …

Hello - I am creating the mouth poses as pose sliders for a dope sheet - one of them (pose sliders) isn't editable "Edit Relationship" for some reason when I right click on it - is there a setting or something I missed... didd't do anything different than the other ones - only having the issue on the one. I have closed out the program and rebooted the computer, which didn't fix the problem. Thanks - Eric

I have always had issues with the library when I install A:M. After I downloaded v.15, I installed it. everything seemed to be fine. I didn't notice any duplicate library stuff. I then downloaded the 'big' data file. I erased the original data folder from my A:M 15 folder and moved the new 'big' folder into it's place. Now, in most of the library folders, everything shows up twice. How do I get rid of the duplicates?

Got a general question about walk cycles. I have fought these things from the beginning so I want to make friends with them. Say I'm making a short with a very charismatic preacher on stage pacing back and forth. Each of his walk paths are of varying lengths and sometimes it's a stroll; sometimes he's walking a little faster. Can I use the same walk cycle for each of these? If I set the starting and ending frame for each time he walks, will it adjust his walk speed and keep his feet from slipping? The last time I tried to do this he would take one step and then slide along the walk path. I hope am able to figure out why that was too.

Before choosing between jumping off a nearby cliff or dusting off the old light-box having ripped the rig out of this model three times and still having the same problem - I thought I'd put this to the forum. The character is rigged with the 2001 skeleton. As soon as I move the arms downwards they flip and/or disappear. It's most likely a constraint problem (?) but after much trial and error and comparing arm bone by arm bone to models with the same rig and that work, I admit defeat. Any ideas? Attached is a top view in which can be seen that the right forearm has boldly gone where no forearm has ever been (eh - no rude comments please lads) and the left has flipped ba…

Hi, I added a background image (jpg), an underwater scene, to an animated fish I created. Some of you who have been assisting me may be aware of the fish. Anyway, every time I render the animated fish with the background the background image is washed out almost completly. This happens with every image I add not just the under water one. I tried removing all the lights to figure out which light was the problem but even with NO LIGHTS it comes back as washed out. Any ideas or suggestions. I really am stuck. im using the shaggy rig on a model i made. in both the shaggy model and mine, i can't change or add smart skin to lets say the thigh bone. when i try the bone dissapears and all i see is the right foot target. you can't add smart skin to the target and in smart skin mode the target node is frozen so i can't bend the knee and then adjust the skin. i see on shaggy they did add smart skin to all the leg bones. how did they do it?

Does anyone know if you can make a model cast a shadow without the model itself rendering in the scene. I have some trees that have foliage made out of hairs. Takes forever to render with the shadow option on. I was going to fake the shadow of the tree by decaling a single patch with an image of the tree as a cookie cut, then placing it correctly in the scene so that it casts an approximate shadow of the real tree. The trouble is the cookie cut patch renders in the scene as well and I can't see anyway of making it none renderable whilst still casting a shadow. If I place the cookie cut out of the view of the camera then I can't get the shadow position corr…

Hello- I have recently been playing with the "Distortion Mode" in AM (cool feature!!) and while researching the AM TechRef Manual (page 209).. I discovered that you can add bones and poses to Distortion Boxes. The manual says you can also save Distortion Boxes and nest them but it doesn't seem to give instructions as to how to do these things. Has anyone added bones etc and saved Distortion Boxes? Many thanks for any info or links to tutorials! Tom

Hi - I am working on a character for a client and she want the char's cheeks to turn pink at a certain point in the animation. Is this possible to do w/ a decal in an action over let's say one second - having the decal transparent at 0 - then non-transparent at one second? Or even set as a pose slider? Any suggestions on how to solve the cheek problem would be great. Thanks - Eric

In short, I need to apply a texture onto an object, but within the shapes defined in an action. I think this may be possible using poses, but couldn't find the answer. (For a few more details, I'm trying to apply one image to the end of a morphing shape's action, then render that out; apply the other to the beginning; once those two are moved in the same way, a simple fade between the clips will create a smooth, 3D morphing transition between them.) Thanks.

I'm doing a composition with some models which are meshes built around prelit images. In other words, I want the exact pixel values for the colors, without any adjustment based on lighting. I'm looking for an option, but I see nothing. I deleted all the lights, and of course that just gives black. I want no shadows, no reflections, just the decals' original colors. Thanks!

Is it possible to make bone movements during an action - for example a 5 second walk cycle is it possible half way through to manually have the character's head turn to the left or right? (not a part of the actual action) I tried to key the neck bone and rotate it, but it wont turn until after the 5 second walk where I created a new chor action. Thanks - Eric

Hello, I need to create an animation of a Winkie raking grass. What's the best way to constrain a long handle (the rake) to both of the characters hands? If I constrain the handle bone to only one of the hand bones, It works fine for that hand. Which means the other hand has to be manually placed. This causes me to have to line up and create a lot of keys to make the other hand appear to be holding on to the rake. If I try to constrain the other hand (to hold the handle) to the same bone or a child bone of the rake, I get a drifted attachment to both hand bones making it impossible to work with. I think it's because the contraints of each hand are compensating for ea…

In some of the 'given' rigs I notice there is often a 'switch' or pose to change between forward and Inverse Kinematic linkage on a model ? i'm using my own setup ( too basic to call it a rig ) just simple bones with points assigned. The default seems to be that it becomes an IK system ? Is there a way to have the joints of the torso on forward while retaining the IK on the legs and arms. Or to be able to switch between one and the other? regards simon

I created the walk cycle and it looks great and no slipping when it is viewed from that action. When I attach the character to a path and have him walk using the created walk action there is a slight slipping of one foot - I have set the "has stride length" correctly and even adjusted that several times to try to fix the slip, but not having any luck. Is there something else I might not be setting correctly to get rid of the slip? Thanks again for all the help with this whole walking thing. ;-) Eric

Hello - I have never really created actions before and used them in animations and I am running into a problem. I created a character and a walking action. I then created a new chor dropped in the character - created a path and put the character on it - and dropped the walk cycle on the character. All that works great, the character walks for 10 seconds and ends at the end of the path. When I go to move the character's bones around from the final walk pose to a standing position it screws up different parts the 10 second walk - depending on what bone I adjusted after the walk. When I set it to "hold last frame "0ff" on the walking cycle, it shoots from the final wal…

As a guitar instructor, I sometimes forget to remember that the knowledge of some basic things that I take for granted, they have yet to learn. I've had no experience with animation of any kind, but the concepts of posing and lines of motion & force, along with exaggeration and how to make an animated character behave like a real actor are understandable to me. Alright - I am simply trying to create a walk cycle and having problems.... when you move one of the foot targets forward to step forward, you obviously have to move the hips bone to line up above it - that moves the whole character forward. Throughout the whole walk cycle do you move the "root" bone to keep it centered the whole time? Also, when you "copy keyframe" and "paste mirrored" it doesn't seem to paste the root bone? Simple question I'm sure but one that seems to be eluding me...: I am extremely impressed with this software but am having an issue with decal setting onto a model. If I position the decal it sets and looks great. If i save the model for later use, the decals are gone when I re-open the model and I can't figure out why. The file name of the decal still shows in the decals folder, but the image no longer appears on the model. To use the decal in the choreography, I have to first open the model, then open a new choreography, then re-apply the decals individually and then choreograph the production. Not impossible for some simple projects, but mind numbing for the dec…
