A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Hi I was doing really well with a new model, but it started responding VERY slowly - a simple pan took 30 seconds and selecting a control point about the same. It is not a massive model. I found that if I was in perspective mode it was fine, or if I turned the Rulers off it was fine. I have several marker lines and the arrow indicators for these seem to 'shimmer'. Anyone any ideas as it is unusable at the moment with the rulers on. I could carry on without rulers, but I would like to know what is causing the problem. I am running version 15c with 3.5gig RAM, PENTIUM 4, 3ghZ, 120gig HD. Thanks Hoggy

I bought Version 8 a long time ago. If I rember correctly I paid over $400 bucks for it. I tried to use it but after working for 6-8 hours on something and just when I went to fine tune the modle, BOOM! "Program has preformed blah blah" and I would lose all that work. I got frustrated with the program so I took some time off from it. I had it in my CD case at work. We had someone steal a computer from our department and ya they got my CD case with my AM cd in it. I called hash and figured I would just pay to have them send me another CD since the program will not run without the CD. WRONG! I was told the only way I could get the software is if I upgraded for $150..... So …

Hi Caroline - awhile back you very nicely posted some printscreens showing exactly how to shape hair (material) in the timeline - it was specifically for the "feathers" of a Tucan model I had created. I am creating grass using hair material and cannot find that post, I need it to brush up on how to do it... do you mind seeing if you can find your post and send me the link? ;-) Thanks - Eric

I've had Brian Fisher working as an intern for the summer at HDStudios, where I do graphics. Brian has been playing with Hash now for only 3 weeks and has just posted an animation on YouTube that I think is quite good for an early 'go' with any 3D software! He used the Porsche model from my V14 CD, and modeled the roads and environment himself. Hopefully this will be found inspiring to other Newbies or folks considering A:M purchase.

I am trying to get a laser firing effect on a moving TIE. I know how to do it on a stationary object via a path. However I cannot get it to work when the ship moves. I tried making two extra splines coming out of the guns and constraining the blaster bolt to them but i couldn't find any way to constrain it to the splines. Is there anyway to constrain a strait path to a moving object to constrain the bolts too? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi - I have a character (robot) I made for a client and there is one scene where the robot has a wig on. The robot and the wig are two different models. I created on bone on the wig called "wigbone" and a bone on top of the character head called "head bone" - I am trying to to a Kinematic Constraint to attach the wig to the robots head. Clicking on the wig's bone "wigbone" and right clicking and choosing "Kinematic constraint" and choosing the "head bone" - it is showing that I picked the correct bone and it is 100% enforced in the properties, but the bone isn't jumping on the robots head? Isn't that how it works? I even tried doing it backwards by clicking on the ro…

So I saw this program at the anime expo last week and I thought it was pretty cool so I decided to buy it. I came home, installed it, and proceeded to create a model.(that's where you're supposed to go right?) And in the 3 hours I spent trying to figure things out, all I could figure out is how to make an oval! In my frustration I was tempted to throw the disk out the window(though considering how much I paid for this thing it's good that I didn't...) people tell me to look at the manual but here's the thing: ALL I GOT WAS THE DISK! I thought it would be okay because the guy at the booth said there was a website (this one) with video tutorials....none of which give me a s…

I may get a little long winded, so please feel free to move on to a more interesting post. I was a child in the 50's, watching Lassie and the Beaver in first run in black and white. My dad had one of the very first remote controls: Me. In Junior High in the early 60's I explored Time and Space with Heinlein, Asimov, and Van Vogt. I went to my first concert in 1965. The Beatles played the Memorial Coliseum here in Portland Oregon. In the late 60's I explored Time and Space in a different manner, and from the few high points I remember, I had a pretty good time. Pong became a sensation and "Asteriods" became astronimical entertainment at a quarter a pop. …

A few days back I was advised to obtain the setup machine for use with my simple models. I did this and have spent a few days trying to install the rig into the model. .. with not a lot of luck. I follow the tutorial through steadily and get all the way through to the point of installing the final rig. That process goes through but, when I try to use the result, there is an error listed in the PWS, "Error Loading String 5003" When I try to use the figure in an action the cp's in the mesh don't seem to be affected by the bones so that, for example, when I move the bones in the arm the mesh just stays in the standard T position. When the pelvis is moved, l…

Hi folks, I'm trying to install A:M 15.0c on my Intel MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.3. I have the yearly subscription version. After install, when I try to open one of the tutorial projects, say, the flag tutorial, I get a message about 'Missing image IO plugin for 'BetsyRoss.bmp'. I checked the Image IO plugins folder preference and it looks okay, with the exception that the capitalization of the path was off. The path that was set ended in 'ImageIOs'. The path on install was 'ImageIOS'. So I corrected the path and restarted A:M and then I was getting 'Cannot load 'TGA.iio' or something like that. This is very odd behavior. This is a fresh install of Mac OS …

I have always had issues with the library when I install A:M. After I downloaded v.15, I installed it. everything seemed to be fine. I didn't notice any duplicate library stuff. I then downloaded the 'big' data file. I erased the original data folder from my A:M 15 folder and moved the new 'big' folder into it's place. Now, in most of the library folders, everything shows up twice. How do I get rid of the duplicates?

Got a general question about walk cycles. I have fought these things from the beginning so I want to make friends with them. Say I'm making a short with a very charismatic preacher on stage pacing back and forth. Each of his walk paths are of varying lengths and sometimes it's a stroll; sometimes he's walking a little faster. Can I use the same walk cycle for each of these? If I set the starting and ending frame for each time he walks, will it adjust his walk speed and keep his feet from slipping? The last time I tried to do this he would take one step and then slide along the walk path. I hope am able to figure out why that was too.

Before choosing between jumping off a nearby cliff or dusting off the old light-box having ripped the rig out of this model three times and still having the same problem - I thought I'd put this to the forum. The character is rigged with the 2001 skeleton. As soon as I move the arms downwards they flip and/or disappear. It's most likely a constraint problem (?) but after much trial and error and comparing arm bone by arm bone to models with the same rig and that work, I admit defeat. Any ideas? Attached is a top view in which can be seen that the right forearm has boldly gone where no forearm has ever been (eh - no rude comments please lads) and the left has flipped ba…

Does anyone know if you can make a model cast a shadow without the model itself rendering in the scene. I have some trees that have foliage made out of hairs. Takes forever to render with the shadow option on. I was going to fake the shadow of the tree by decaling a single patch with an image of the tree as a cookie cut, then placing it correctly in the scene so that it casts an approximate shadow of the real tree. The trouble is the cookie cut patch renders in the scene as well and I can't see anyway of making it none renderable whilst still casting a shadow. If I place the cookie cut out of the view of the camera then I can't get the shadow position corr…

Hello- I have recently been playing with the "Distortion Mode" in AM (cool feature!!) and while researching the AM TechRef Manual (page 209).. I discovered that you can add bones and poses to Distortion Boxes. The manual says you can also save Distortion Boxes and nest them but it doesn't seem to give instructions as to how to do these things. Has anyone added bones etc and saved Distortion Boxes? Many thanks for any info or links to tutorials! Tom

In short, I need to apply a texture onto an object, but within the shapes defined in an action. I think this may be possible using poses, but couldn't find the answer. (For a few more details, I'm trying to apply one image to the end of a morphing shape's action, then render that out; apply the other to the beginning; once those two are moved in the same way, a simple fade between the clips will create a smooth, 3D morphing transition between them.) Thanks.

I'm doing a composition with some models which are meshes built around prelit images. In other words, I want the exact pixel values for the colors, without any adjustment based on lighting. I'm looking for an option, but I see nothing. I deleted all the lights, and of course that just gives black. I want no shadows, no reflections, just the decals' original colors. Thanks!

Hello, I need to create an animation of a Winkie raking grass. What's the best way to constrain a long handle (the rake) to both of the characters hands? If I constrain the handle bone to only one of the hand bones, It works fine for that hand. Which means the other hand has to be manually placed. This causes me to have to line up and create a lot of keys to make the other hand appear to be holding on to the rake. If I try to constrain the other hand (to hold the handle) to the same bone or a child bone of the rake, I get a drifted attachment to both hand bones making it impossible to work with. I think it's because the contraints of each hand are compensating for ea…

In some of the 'given' rigs I notice there is often a 'switch' or pose to change between forward and Inverse Kinematic linkage on a model ? i'm using my own setup ( too basic to call it a rig ) just simple bones with points assigned. The default seems to be that it becomes an IK system ? Is there a way to have the joints of the torso on forward while retaining the IK on the legs and arms. Or to be able to switch between one and the other? regards simon
