For a while, it was going to be Planes, Trains, Automobiles... and Flying Saucers! FlyingSaucers1000.mp4 Someone asked me if the Image Contest winners had been announced yet. No! I am tediously slow at getting the announcement video done. Hopefully real soon now...

There's another A:M Image Contest flying your way. Which means I oughta' get back on track and get out the prizes for the last one! Here are some handsome, so-suitable-for-framing-you-get-a-dollar-to-buy-a-frame runner-up certificates waiting to hit the road.

Hello again, Investigating lipsync using decals and I'm wondering if I can import a sequence of mouth position images and then advance the decal sequence to the desired frame or phoneme image using a pose slider. I've gotten as far as hiting the driver icon but then...I stop. Note I'm using v11.1 (I recently upgraded ) Thanks for any ideas or confirmations.

This issue may not be fixable if it's an unavoidable side effect of how AO works but I'll submit it anyway. Here is a prog. render of the test model illuminated by a sun type light source. The model is a flat grey surface above which hovers four glass windows. Each window model (7 in. x 7 in.; 17.8 x 17.8 cm) is 4x4 patches surrounded by a tubular frame. The greenish glass has a 90% transparency. Each window is floating a different distance above the grey surface ranging from 2 in (5.1 cm) to 1/2 in. (1.3 cm). This is a final render(9 passes) of the model after you turn on AO = 100% with a sky blue global colour. Notice that the ambient light is still bein…

Hey everyone. I'm considering trying to transfer a very dense figure model into A:M. I was hoping that the re-topo tool would help out, but I was not able to find much on what others had been able to get out of it. Has anyone been successful in "retopo'ing" a high dense mesh, human figure in A:M?? William

Confession time. I've been using Macs for some while but havenot been formally introduced to them. This would not normally be a problem but, does any Mac user know where the "insert" key" is ? On a PC, if memory serves, its actually marked as "Insert" On a Mac no. ( at least on this one ). The reason for the question is that I am preparing an animatic using the Tangram shapes and its getting tedious having to key each one using the mouse. When the mouse hovers over the Make Key buton in the chor it suggests that the shortcut is the "Insert" button on a keypad. If I can find that on a Mac keyboard it could speed things up a bit. Thank you. simon

Hmm.. I don't recall seeing this before. In keyboards commands we have the letter "Y" which inserts a CP, but now there is a "Shift Y" and it says for "Insert mass" ! What is this ? I tried using it but it seems to do nothing ??? Anybody ?

I wonder if there is a command in A:M that lets you insert a spline ring in a model? I mean a complete spline ring above or below a given existing ring. NOT point by point, NOT an extrusion...but kind of something inbetween: select a spline ring, then select this command I am looking for, and presto: a new spline ring is inserted. I have search both forum and tech ref in vaine...but maybee it exists as an undocumented shortcut?

Hey everyone, I have a choreography question for you guys. If you have 2 different models in a Choreography, can you attach a CP in the first model(model A)to a bone in the other model(model ? So that the bone in model B can move the CP in model A.

Hi Everyone, I felt that if I was going to continue posting on here that I should set up an account of my own as it didn't feel right using my dads. I will make one more post from my fathers account (Below my comment from this account on the following thread: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=41737) just to verify that I am who I say I am on this account. [Edit: This side discussion has been split off from topic AMC Gremlin] Investigating further... Here is a comparison of displacement effects: First with a Gradient Material set to transition from RGB 128 to RGB 129 and Displacement set to 100000% Second is that gradient rendered to a TGA and used as a Displacement map Third is that gradient rendered to an OpenEXR and used as a Displacement map The Material is able to calculate an exact value for every pixel between the 128 and the 129 levels, creating a perfectly smooth slope. The TGA map, as expected, has one stair step from 128 to 129 The EXR has 8 steps. EXR uses a…

I am wondering if I could generate a height map from objects in a scene. What I want to ultimately do is create one grayscale image that can be used as a displacement or height map. I have a small laser engraver that seems capable of carving from grayscale images into various materials such as wood, plastic etc. I'm also thinking of doing carvings to make molds from for pewter castings. Thoughts?

I had said I was going to do "cloth" as the topic of my next "It Can't Be Done" series but that is looking to be a major endeavor I don't have time for right now. I hereby re-open the table for nominations. If you have a smaller-scale miracle that you'd like to see done in A:M, suggest it below! If you suggested something last time around and are still interested in that topic, re-nominate it! I will pick one based on based on my own judgement of general interest and feasibility and the winner will, of course, receive their choice of memoir by Martin D. Hash! If, by chance, you missed the previous "It Can't Be Done"... check it out!

My next "It Can't Be Done" series will be on Simcloth in A:M. (I'm going to award myself a book by Martin Hash for suggesting that topic. ) Cloth seems to be one of those things that people find very enticing when they see it but very frustrating when they try it themselves. I think a series that builds up the knowledge base from the basics to the useful tricks would be a good thing. Here is your chance to suggest particular cloth things that you would like to see solutions for. i probably won't get to this until July, after the Image contest so you have time to think about what you want to see. tJRN4-A5I5E And if you didn't cat…

One of the things I enjoyed while in Japan was discovering books and magazine devoted to Animation:Master. I think I once told the (rather humorous) story about how my family was on vacation and my father in law and I stepped into a bookstore and because it turned out to be an 'adult' bookstore I didn't really find much of anything worth buying except a few random kids books but once back on the road he revealed he had purchased a video. Curious to see what he had purchased I inquired and immediately went into shock upon seeing the cover of the video... he'd purchased the Haruwo video by Shao Guee that I had a (small) part in subtitling/translating into English (I was …

I hope I'm asking this in the right place ? It might sound odd but, is there a way to change the way joints are listed in the action and choreo files. Not the names but the way the hierarchy is listed at the side ? At first I thought it was the order on which the bones were selected at first but. I tried to select them in the order I would use them later and it still seems to come out the same. descending it reads Back Back 2 Head Hips Then the first finger joint then the bicep What I 'd like to do is to get the hierarchy in order so it descended as Bicep Forearm Hand Thumb 1 Thumb2 Thumb3 First finger Furst Finger 2 First…

The MuhHair and Kajiya-Kay plugin shaders work to make Particle Hair look better by re-shaping the Diffuse and Specular response of their surfaces. Kajiya-Kay is the easier one since it has no parameters of its own, it's just ON or not. However, unlike MuhHair, that lets you fine-tune the placement of highlights on the hair, Kajiya-Kay requires you to carefully place your specular light source... as you would in real life lighting. Here is hair with no extra shader and Specular Intensity 0 in the surface properties. Same hair, but with Specular Intensity greater than 0. The renderer seems to regard the hair as one simple mass and paints the spe…

I just stumbled across a new keyboard shortcut I'd never known about, so I don't know if it's new or just under-documented. If you select a cp on an object, then hit slash to select the object, the pivot is automatically set at the physical center of the selected cp's. BUT, if you then hit Ctrl-Z, the pivot moves to the first cp you selected! This is fantastic, never seen it before but holy crap! Another great one I learned from the Barry Zundel tutorials, is a version of hitting Y to create a cp at the midpoint of a spline. BUT, if you click just a tiny bit PAST the end cp of a spline and hit Y, a new cp shoots out the end of the spline exactly half the distanc…

I feel a bit like I've just woke up in an alternate universe. This has been a thing for a few years now and I'm just now discovering it. (Probably because this is the first time I've used Powerpoint and Word in years) Here's what surely must be Euisung Lee's Running T-Rex of old school A:M fame... obviously repainted... but... ...imported into Powerpoint as an animated model that can be turned around, duplicated and scaled... ...and exported as an animated gif with transparency or an MP4 video. Can someone answer some questions about A:M versions? 1. Which is the last version that employed a standalone CD that could be used as a key with any computer (i.e. portable)? 2. Which is the first version that uses the new XML file formats? 3. Which versions can convert the old file formats to the new XML file formats (i.e. read the old, write the new)? Thanks, -SB

A friend has offered me his Macbook Pro when he upgrades in a few weeks time, it has Windows 7 on as a dual boot option. The first question is, if I buy a Licence to run V18 on the Mac , do I have to get another one to run it under W7 on the same machine ? I am keen to try the 64bit option to speed up the rendering and, it might provide the option of using the setup machine as well . In a related question. My brother installed W7 on my Mini using an open source program called " Virtual Box", haven't had a chance to try it yet but, I have my earlier versions of AM on CD. Would it be legitimate to use those under virtual box , again to try the 64bit version wh…

One of the big drawbacks for me with the subscription with AM is I am stuck on one machine. For myself I often work more on my laptop and only use my desktop when I really need to. Mainly because I have shoulder problems and reaching up with my Cintiq becomes an issue quickly. I have 1 program that is subscription based and limited to one computer BUT they use a user account where I can sign in and instantly authorize the machine I am using to use the software. This though not a perfect option gives me the flexibility to work from either machine. Possible to implement this with AM?

I've asked before but it was a bit uncertain as to how to procede. Trying to finish the boy and bear project I'm having trouble with the light penetrating the walls of the model. Setting up the opening and closing scene for the Dance sequence, its taking part in the young mans bedroom at home. Have made the model of the house and now trying to set up the lights in the chor. The first problem is that the lights are penetrating the mesh and showing up where they shouldn't. Is there a way to avoid this ? This is the scene, looking down the stairs to the hallway. The light source, a Klieg light , is outside, to the right of the model, in the street ( its supposed to be a passing car ). As you can see the light cone is penetrating the mesh of the Hall wall and, in the upper left, that of the bedroom wall, seen through the bedroom doo…

A forum member has posed this problem... LightSource.prj That is the correct behavior. Only ray-traced lights can accurately account for the shadowing created by boolean cutters. So, with the box as a boolean cutter, the sphere is completely "cut" and casts no shadow from the ray-traced light. The z-buffered light can not handle that complex situation, so even though the box cuts the sphere from the camera's view, the z-buffered light still sees it and a shadow is cast. Interesting way to get a shadow-only pass! I shall remember that!

I'm working away on a project which will combine AM animation with hand drawn animation in TVpaint. I will post some interim results in the WIP space later. To make it easier at the drawing stage, I've started rendering out at UHD resolution.. Unfortunately, it is taking a long time to render each frame, between 7:30 and 10:00 hours. Thats not a big headache, although it would be better to shorten the time, as I can get on with something else while waiting. However, what is of concern is an inconsistency in the renders. These are png conversions from TGA originals Notice the shadows and the lighting, it is almost as if someone stepped in front of the light so…

I'm trying to resolve the lighting on my dancing figures. Initially I constrained the lights to the nody null so they would follow the figure around, That made the lights look too kinetic. Then constrained them to aim at a null and asnimated that to follow the figures ( hand keyed on the null ) but that appears to lead to unwanted overlaps or underlaps Can anyone suggest a suitable method ? What I am after is a stage show type effect with each character being lit be a follow spot. At present there are seven sets of two lights , one for each figure, and I am keying them on and off at suitable points. Any help gratefully received simon

Working in V17G under OSX 10.68. Having some very frustrating problems setting up the lighting for the dance sequence. Sometimes the lights aren't rendering and , when they do, changes in position are not reflected in the render. First screen shot shows the render, notice the spot position with the values highlighted. Second screen shot shows no effective change in render but the spots position has been drastically altered. I refreshed the window carefully and advanced and rest the timeline after the change to allow it to take effect. For such a large positional change I was expecting a much bigger change in render Any help gratefully received. …

I am trying to get a linocut look in A:M. Something like this (linocut by danish artist Palle Nielsen): The closest I can get is this (done with the Grid material in A:M): But I would very much like to be able to let the grid follow the surface on the organic forms, and also to get variation in the type of crosshatching/lines. This is not easily done - if at all - with the grid material. Then, as I searched the Darktree site, I stumbled upon this picture in their gallery: This seems to be excatly what I'm looking for. Alas, no information is given, except that the picture is made by Yith Moser. And I can't find this guy or any info on…

Hey all, Dunno if this ever got an answer, but is there some limit on the number of light sources in a given chor? Just added a model to a chor that already had a different one (admittedly, both are lightsource heavy) and lost all environmental lighting. removing the 2nd model from the chor re-established them. Any pointers on how to avoid this would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich
