Hello, Just hours before my flight to Vegas I finally got Animation Master Chat up and running in it's new home! The machine is a new install and has some updating to do but I it should not restart till 3am(at this point I'm not sure I trust that though). If it does restart it will be fast so do not worry. You guys may even get to see my drunken miss spellings if I log in to make sure it's up while in Vegas. You may ask yourself can my drunken miss spellings really be any worse then my normal miss spellings. And the answer is YES haha! Email will be a bit slow while I'm out too, But I will try to get to them the few hours before I'm partying in the morning each …

Can somebody help me with an explanation on how the settings for an animated layer inside a coreography works? My scene includes a model of a tv on which I have an animated layer made from 24 still frames. It is to be played in loop by say 8 fps and repeated say 10 times. Where do I set this? The settings "crop" and "range" in the "timing" dialogue are somewhat cryptic to me...is there something I have overlooked?

It's been a while since I've done this - I have a string of tga files (0000 - 0600) and want to apply them as a moving decal. As I recall, I only have to apply the first in the series, and the rest will follow automatically. It doesn't seem to be working - the image stays frozen on the first frame. I've put a few of them in the decal folder, thinking perhaps they need to be there and not just in the images folder, but that is not working either. I made an action, wherein the object the decal is applied to moves slightly, but still no luck. I've looked for the subject in the techref manuel but can't find it. Perhaps also someone could let me know where it is in the m…

For you pros out there, is it possible to keyframe bump map percentage, thereby animating it over time? I'm hitting a wall. Thanks in advance. Chris

This may sound strange, my apologies if it does but, does anyone have any advice on how to animate a figure on the diagonal? By which I mean, If the direction of travel is perpendicular and in straight lines then it is very straightforward ( pardon the pun ), I have two figures already done but, the third is coming in at an angle to the target and I am having trouble getting the movement working because its not perpendicular to the view angle. I'm sure I've done this before but, the afternoon tea has not dispelled the clouds.. Any advice gratefully received. simon

Have set up a run cycle action for a sheep and need to animate it to a mark using the action, but then keyframe it after that point. I recall a tutorial somewhere about doing that but can't remember where. Could somebody kindly refresh my memory ? The setup at the moment is that, the sheep runs up to 00:04:09, The action stops. I would then like to key it jumping over a hurdle from 00:04:10, using the last frame of the action as the starting point for the keyframing. I am sure this is possible but, if keys are set after the end of the action, it seems to affect the section before. This may be caused by too many late nights and early morning, bu…

Is there still interest in an animation boot camp? The goal would not be to teach you all there is to know about character animation but to get you using A:M right so that you may make sense and good use of the abundant character animation information that is available now. I'm thinking there might be four projects.... -Bouncing ball -Broad jump -Walk -Pose-to-pose acting exercise. We'd need to find some time we could all Skype together once a week.

A little background: A long time ago I bought version 11. I used it for quite awhile until my machine died. I tried using it on my Vista laptop and it didn't work. I got an upgrade patch from here to version 12 which did work. I used that for a long time. Then my laptop's disc drive started developing problems. At first I thought it was the disc as it was all scratched up. After much time, frustration aggravation and troubleshooting, I have since discovered that the drive itself was going bad and is now plain done in. I bought an external to run the cd. Here's my problem: I know the drive is good, I know it will read the disc. I was able to uninstall the program and then …

I have had AM on the edge of my radar for a while, but could someone please tell me how the licenses used to originally work back in the day before activation ? Occasionally original AM versions pop up on Ebay and I was wondering how many versions since AM has required online activation ? I may sign up and subscribe now, but would still like a legacy version fully offline and internet independent which could just be swapped around as I change my machines. Could anyone please tell me which version was the last of the old school versions that worked in this way please ? Also, I read somewhere that AM is something of a closed ecosystem because of the specific way…

Even after years of using A:M I find myself continually impressed by the breadth of features that are at our disposal. I was recently looking for a simple video/editor/viewer to do some basic reorganization of rendered frames (also from A:M) and thought to use A:M's own Choreography based linear editor. Needless to say it outperformed my expectations. I even discovered a few new things too. For instance, I didn't realize or had most certainly forgotten that saving out an Action of what I had edited together in the video actually could be reutilized (or just saved so that I could return to that earlier editing point). Did I run into any snags? Not really, although…

A new release (v18.0b) was posted so go get it! Latest Information Before you install a new release there are some things to consider: - Are you in the middle of a production? - Are you under a deadline? - Are your settings perfect and you don't wish to see them change? Consider these and other factors carefully before installing new software and when in doubt... login to the A:M Forum and ask questions. That's why we are here. Rather than post to the squeekly clean notification of the v18.0b release I thought I'd start a topic here to capture thoughts on the current release. But first, thanks for this latest update. I…

Hi guys and gals... some of you may know it already but now it is placed officially on the hash.com-website: Since 1998 there was no demo-/trial-version of Animation:Master available... In 2012 this has changed: Now there is a trial-version of A:M again! The "new" trial-version is a fully functional version of Animation:Master v17 (32 or 64 bit) which will run for 14 days. So if you have a friend who always wanted to test out A:M or you wanted to show A:M to somebody else before, you may want to tell him/her about this exciting news . For more informations on how to get a trial-version, please read the instructions on this page: A:M Trial Reques…

My short A:M-animated film "Garrett" has been selected for showing at another film festival - the Ft. Myers Film Festival this March 21-25. If any of you are looking for an excuse to visit Florida, this is is it =) http://fortmyersfilmfestival.com/ I won't be able to attend this festival because of work. And our weather is nicer here. =) But if you happen to be in the area, check it out. =)

From what I read, Hash Inc will be next to the web comics area at Booth 1322. (It's a bit hard to make out the booth numbers on the interactive map so see the attached image)

I was just going through some of the old Character Rigging tutorials that Raf Anzovin compiled for Animation:Master back in the early 2000's and remembered that Anzovin Studios, which currently produce a set of killer rigging/animation plug-ins for Maya, began by programming for and working with A:M. Does anyone know if The Setup Machine can still be found anywhere for A:M or if it even would still work? If not, has anything come along since then that assists with the rigging process for humanoid and non-humanoid characters? Just puzzling...

I noticed in 17c the same project rendered AO considerable slower. In 17a rendered 8:53 i think and 17c 37 minutes. Has anyone played with AO in 17c? Steve reset it again and it has not finished yet and it is now 1:30 hours per frame.

[Solution: shorten filename] Has anyone else ever had an error dropping in a wave file into a project? I have several PC's I work on and everything is great when importing an audio file, but on one machine I get "trouble opening mci device error: 304" on this Windows 10 machine. The wave file imports, but there is no audio playback. I so I assume it's that machine and look to make sure all drivers are current and can't replicate the problem in any other app other than A:M. I can import an MP3 and that has playback no problem. Unfortunately I am noticing sync problems and it does not display a waveform in the timeline. Probably because MP3 is not fully support…

OK, this is a long shot. Is there a way to automatically apply key frames to a percentage pose slider. For example; If I manually move a bone from point A to point B in an action, that animation would then automatically move a pose slider a certain percentage based on some predetermined association (x translate of bone1 from -5" to 10" moves the pose slider 0 to 100%) This may sound like a strange need, but I have been using A:M to program animatroncs with the majority of the control generated through key framed poses exported through an A:M action file. I am looking to combine the pose sliders with an IK rig, but I want that IK rig to drive the pose sliders in a …

I wonder if it is possible in some way to add a slight (or not so slight) automatic random jitter to an object? This could be to a camera (to make it look handheld), to a character (ie to make it look like it is freezing), or to a light (to make it look like a faulty flickering lightbulb)?

If you are not using A:M's automatic back up feature you are missing out on a huge convenience. There have been many times when I've made a mistake that was too many steps and too many window changes to back out of with Undo. Having the last hour of of my work archived in five minute increments and being able to go back and find the last version before I made the mistake has saved a lot of rework.

In the help for A:M 10.5 there is reference to surface properties Average Normals and Normal Weight. I can't seem to find them the the properties for an object I have in a Model window. The reference says: I read some other posts that say you need to toggle "Render As Lines" on the group under "Groups" for your model, and then the properties will show up. Hasn't worked for me. Also, some suggest you need to first apply the Porcelain material to your model. I did that (dragged onto model), but still don't see the "Average Normals" property, and do not see these properties anywhere. Is there an "Advanced" mode I need to engage to see these propert…

Retopology is good with the possibility of a bake of texture. This allow to use sculpted objects in AM to create characters and textures. Of course unwrap would be great too. It is clear that it is not easy to work with software like zbrush and 3dcoat when using AM. Because there is no possibility to bake a texture from a props. Xnormal is a software to do this but it's not AM. With the same option we can do all we want in AM. Stop with export and bad UV. That doesn't work. Just retopo and bake

I’m sitting here wondering about two things that has absoluttely nothing to do with each other… 1. When baking an object in A:M, what is the connection between the figure “Resolution” and the size of the resulting bitmaps. It seems completely arbitrary to me?? 2. Did the option to turn off the splash screen make it into v.18? And if so, where is it? Anybody?

What's a good (and hassle-free) way to hard-bake an animation? I mean that the result should be the following: All visible transforms from the original animation are recorded to bone channels. All relationships such as IK and constraints are stripped from bones so that only the direct transform animation kicks in. I tried Bake All Actions, but it didn't give me the results I needed. It appears that this command doesn't really bake all relationship-driven motions: if you delete the model's relationships, the "before" and "after" animations are different. I need this "barebones" motion for my action importer. When I import simple FK-only animations, the import results l…

Hello! Two questions in a single hour! Crazy! Anyway, I'm trying to create a beach ball sort of coloring pattern, and am running into a problem. I've tried selecting alternating columns, using the patch select tool, and by selecting CPs, but when I assign a color, it's affecting the entire ball. So, I tried applying the color to just one group, and then adding more patches to that group, and I can't seem to make that happen, either. When I select a patch on the next column, it does a kind of "select everything in between original group and new selection", kinda like shift-selecting an entire line or paragraph of text in a word document. Does the same thing if I try …

Thought I'd have a try at some basic exercises and trying to get a ball rolling properly. In preparation for the idea, pose sliders were used for the rotation and spins. However this was not one of my better ideas ! Does anyone have good advice as to how to achieve it ? The ball is setup with a single bone for the mesh and that controls the rotation and spin and the distance with the model bone ( hope that makes sense ?) Might there be a better way ? regards simon

Hello Hashers- In the past I have not gotten into designing materials much because there is a such a wealth of materials already available designed by others to choose from, and Dark Tree is also amazing... ...however I am trying to teach myself how to think like a Materials designer and I realized that I have no idea how to design a material for a barber pole. The idea of designing a spiral color wrapping around a cylinder is beyond me..and designing two alternating colors is again bewildering. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks! Tom

I was just about to launch a bug report because every time I tried to create a preview icon in A:M I was being shown the desktop. I then thought perhaps it best to post to the forum to see if others were seeing the same thing. Then I thought about how unstable my entire system has been of late (I haven't restarted my computer in a long time) Then I thought that resetting A:M should be tried before anything else (yes, and especially before reformatting my harddrive!) And it worked. Now I can create preview icons. Note to self. Here's what I think contributed to the problem AND what might also relate to some other problems, especially when working with older fi…

It will be about 5 pages long and will introduce quite nicely into the world of A:M. If you can't grab an issue at the kiosk, you can get it directly on their website. See you *Fuchur*

Hey guys just reporting this ( is there a forum for errors and bugs for AM I am unaware of - or how do we submit these to Steffan ? ) Any hoo, Mac AM, running on Yosemite - when I import in any bitmaps as rotoscopes or decals they come in garbled as jpegs / pngs, the old tga seems to work some what and somewhere in this routine also causes crashes - especially when you want to delete an image . . . any clues ?? When you toggle between OPENGL & OPENGL3 in the options, its refreshes the image . . . then crash . . . just converted image to TGA and so far no crash . . . yet . . . it feels like I'm running AM through a virtual OS running on my Mac . . . I'm working on rigging a character right now that has black bead eyes (like the Peanuts characters) that can track slightly around his face to give him the illusion of looking around. I'd like to add a bit of expressiveness to his eyes by adding equally simplified eyelids that would render as a flat line or an arc. To do this, I created flattened spheres and pose sliders to control their up/down and arc properties. I was just about to start with poses that would conceal the eyes as the lids close but stopped when I realized I was about to have a huge problem with this approach: if the eyes are looking anywhere but straight ahead, I had no strategy for making sure they sta…

I am realizing that this simple concept (Bone Falloff) is eluding me in ways I can't quite express. Is there a reference or example of ideal use for Bone Falloff? Alternatively, perhaps someone can walk me through a basic usage scenario? This is opposed to CP weighting except that I assume CP weighting is actually a means to define/refine Bone Falloff. Sorry if this is too vague a question. It seems to me that Bone Falloff should be a very simple concept and yet that simplicity eludes me. As such I'm looking for a very basic use case/example that demonstrates the basics.
