I heard a rumor Mac Catalina has been released. Hopefully some brave soul is testing Animation:Master on it. Crossing fingers and hoping things might actually be better than worse.

Hi, another question for you. I've been using the 2005 XP version of AM since well ..... 2005 lol. It's treated me well and I really have no complaints about it ... other then the typical slow rendering and not being able to use it on a new computer. The question is whether I should buy the newest version? I looked at the Hash website and the program looks basically the same. Are there enough upgrades and improvements to make it worth it for a casual user? I'm kind of cheap and don't want to buy it unless it's really worth it 🤔. Also, are the models I've created with my 2005 version compatible with the newest version or would I have issues? Thanks in advance…

This model was sculpted and retopoed in 3DCoat and then exported as an .obj. Then imported into A:M. In the last step several faces across the object disappeared. First I thought "flipped normals", but this does not seem to be the case. I have looked at the object in both Blender and Messiah Studio, and here everything seems okay. Anybody have an idea on whats going on? And off course how to repair, without destroying the underlying UVs of the object?

I'm trying to refine my workflow a little and am curious... Can we bake Patch Images into the images that result from Baking Surfaces? As far as I can tell they aren't considered part of the surface that gets baked. As they are defined by the patches themselves they'd be especially useful in defining regions for decal images created by the bake. So I'm curious to know know if they actually can or cannot be included in the bake. I'm not seeing a way to accomplish that here. As a workaround there is always the tried and true methodology of a simple screen capture and decal placement. Having patch images in the bake would skip those manual steps for p…

I'm trying a test on the mix files while waiting on something else. Working in V18 under OSX 10.11.6 Have set up the models to use 50% of underlying colour, they render as a quick render in a model window but, when I try to render them out in a chor, just the alpha channel is there, no lines. Is there a setting I might be missing? Thank you simon

This may sound strange, my apologies if it does but, does anyone have any advice on how to animate a figure on the diagonal? By which I mean, If the direction of travel is perpendicular and in straight lines then it is very straightforward ( pardon the pun ), I have two figures already done but, the third is coming in at an angle to the target and I am having trouble getting the movement working because its not perpendicular to the view angle. I'm sure I've done this before but, the afternoon tea has not dispelled the clouds.. Any advice gratefully received. simon

Having some bother with Toon render in V17g. ( OSX 10.85 ) At the weekend I succesfully rendered the same chor with Toon and non toon renders, then composited them together. That was at 720 HD. As the project overall will be at 1080HD I went back to try it at that res This was the non toon render When I reset the chor so that only the figure was visible and tried to Toon render it, with the same setting as used for all the other chors in the project, It crashed everytime. I've tried it about 20 or so times now, trying different variations of toon setting but without success. I just tried it with non toon and it worked but, without changing anything e…

I am aware that AM toon render can control the thickness of the line. Can you also control that line so that it is possible to taper it from one end to the other? (see attached graphic which shows a line created in a graphics program and some curtains which were rendered in AM) Thanks for any feedback! Tom

Having issues in later Versions to render previews. It asks for a null, than just creates an empty AVI in the Temp folder. Rendering a larger region with multipass in the choreography fails. Also the MDD export does not work. The MDD, OBJ and LWO files all have different point counts. Hooks create 2 points instead of merging to one, and with 4-point subdivision export 5 point patches will add 5 extra unmerged points. I tried it on different computers with Windows 7, but always the same issues. If someone had the same problem and a solution, I would love to hear about it. Thanks, Rolf

Having spent the last few days trying to get some maps applied it seemed like a good idea to test them out in a scene. When I did I got a strange result. The two figures in the same scene rendered completely differently, even though the settings are the same This was the initial result, with the maps in place. ( also found a problem with the hair around the right ear ). Notice the difference between Bill and Doris? I went back into the properties panel to make sure the settings were the same, aside from the colour. Got the same result The above was all in V17g Opened the cho file in V18p and embedded everything needed, saved as 001B before testing aga…

Hello, I had an idea about an animation I'd like to do which I'm trying (probably unsuccessfully, knowing me) to keep fairly simple. It involves basically one thing that I want to make sure is feasible before moving forward. If not, then I need a Plan B. I have a round hole in a flat surface. For part of the animation, I want the round hole to morph into a square hole, and then back to a round hole. Is that something that can be animated? Thanks

While reading Martin's post from earlier today, Stolen Smells, I followed the link to YouTube, and then happened upon the Hash CG History channel on YouTube (very cool, if you haven't checked it out), and it reminded me of a project I had worked on in a day gone by... TBT Circa 1998 - Review and Herald New Releases 1998 conference! https://youtu.be/sHgrs2pu6Z8 I had worked on a video to announce all the books that would be released that year by the Review & Herald Publishing Association, and a live action Book Store Manager would be meeting some Interesting Characters! The T-Rex (in the linked video) was one of the interesting characters! There we…

When starting A:M up, the program suddenly stops loading, displaying this message: It just sits there for 20 seconds, then continue and complete loading. I am not sure if this is a new behaviour, but I think so. I then tried opening the community service tab in A:M with the purpose of changing what I thought to be a setting, so A:M would load without trying to connect to community service. I couldn't find any settings there, just the login screen. Then tried to log on, and guess what happened: yes, exactly: it halted for 20 seconds and then came with this message: I am not interested in using community service (from inside A:M anyhow) so ho…

Hi, Please watch the video (link below) and tell me what I'm doing wrong. I need a model of a sphere rotated forward 90 degrees. At the end of the video you'll see the splines warp??? BTW at the end I hit the space bar several times refreshing so it isn't a refresh error. This the latest version 17. Thanks, Rusty

So I got a new Shining 3D EinScan scanner and the models are much more complex, in the range of a million polys. Very smooth and detailed and orders of magnitude larger than my old scans with the Xbox Kinect. So I'm trying to load the 3D files (mostly scans of automotive parts I replicate) and it will initially load, say it's around 1.4 million polys and then go to 30% and never load. I've left it for over 3 hours and it never loads, but doesn't crash. What is the limitation of importing OBJ or STL files to AM from the plugins utility? Thanks!

Hi, What I'm after is a still shot of matter spiraling into a black hole. 3D streaks of...lets say dust or clouds. Lets just consider a cube (instead of the entire spiral)...if only there was a material that would fill it with 3D clouds but, to my knowledge, materials don't work that way, they apply themselves to flat patches and can have bump or perhaps even displacement for depth. Like the above, what I'll probably do is just whack out the sides and ends of the cube so I have two patches and, instead of a material (and longer render times), I'll just apply a cookie cutter image of my cloud streaks and then apply a deformation map to give them a 3D look (from t…

Hi guys, this is a demonstration of a small but (if you ask me) very powerful new feature in A:M v18k (getting beta tested at the moment): > Set camera to bird view / Set bird view to camera. Hope you like it . Thank you very much for adding it Steffen . See you *Fuchur* PS: Small little addition to the video: You need to be in a perspective bird view (!= orthogonal bird view) to have this feature. This is always the case if you use the turn tool starting in the camera view OR you can just toogle its state to be perspective by pressing "\" / hitting the button in the views toolbar. PPSS: And of course: I am talking about the Turn-Tool, not the…

Hi A:Mler, for everybody in a german speaking country it may be interesting to know that there will be an article by Ralf Gliffe about Hash Animation:Master v18 in the Digital Production 04:2015 (the biggest german magazine about 3d-graphics and post production, http://www.digitalproduction.com). It will be about 5 pages long and will introduce quite nicely into the world of A:M. If you can't grab an issue at the kiosk, you can get it directly on their website. See you *Fuchur*

In addition to the Hash gift certificates for the top three entries in the Sci-Fi image contest, the top ten entrants will be receiving the a DVD of Mark Largent's all-A:M-made "The Wobbling Dead," an animated puppet parody of the AMC series "The Walking Dead." Now you have no reason not to dust off that sci-fi entry you didn't quite get finished, polish it up and jump into the fray. Contest deadline July 6 Don't be a lazy zombie! If you wake up on July 7 and find out only 9 people entered you're going to kick yourself!

Have started trying to model a Trial motorbike for use in the current project. They all seemto have spoked wheelsrather than the alloy type used by road racersa nd production types. What might be the best way to model the spokes ? I recall someone suggesting using "render as lines" to a similar question in the past. Have tried that but, it came out as a solid disc. Deleted the rim part, leaving the splines behind, and they don't show up as lines, although that is selected under properties. Does Toon render have to be engaged for that to work or, am I missing something ? ( again ) Thanks simon

Working in V17g, under OSX 10.68 Revising last weeks brief, checking the mesh penetration glitches. It was going well, doing quick regional renders to test position, suddenly, this happened, Since then the render times have gone through the roof. For example a 9 second segment that was taking 2 seconds per frame to render, has gone out to several minutes per frame. Can any one point me to what the problem might be and, most importantly. How to fix it ? regards simon

This may sound a bit convoluted but, I've spent the last few days trying to learn how to use Flash and produced a short New Year greeting in it. Rendered that as a QT movie file and want to use that as a cookie cutter decal in AM. NY.mov This is the result. The cutting seems to take place on the first frame but then stops. It uses the background colour rather than an alpha channel. could that be the problem ? regards simon V17g OSX

A project waiting in the wings is gaining ground but I've ran into a minor glitch that I"d like to see resolved. Specifically, I note that when changing the SVN repository setting to another location the TWO film repository URL gets tacked on to the end of the new one. This is only inside A:M Community and SVN can be run just fine outside of A:M so there is an easy workaround but I'm wondering if there might be something (a cache?) I need to clear in order for the SVN repository location/URL to be properly set? Any guesses or insights? A guess or two from me might be that the setting is stored in the WIndows registry or... A:M is finding the URL in a dif…

Something new is happening when I try to Zoom-RMB around an area. As shown in the screen capture, each time I hit Z and then depress the the screen reverts to the previous view but does result in zooming to the selected area. My current work around is to hold down the space bar (Refresh) before RMB. This issue seems to have started after AMD upgraded my drivers for the Radeon RXT 6700 XT. buggy_zoom.mp4

Hi, I screwed up thinking that the word I wanted was 'Quadology' and my proof reader said she could not verify that this word existed and suggested I use Quadrilogy instead, which I did everywhere. Now I find out that this isn't 'really' a word either and that I should have used Tetralogy. Crap! I have a lot of changes to make--almost everything!! Including the animated trailer. Since I have to do this I'm asking anyone who will take the time to watch it again and see if there is anything else I should consider. If you are willing to the trailer is at the link below. I've found something strange about v19n progressive and final renders. When you model old railroad vehicles you use a lot of rivet heads. The most efficient way to model a rivet head is a four patch circular quadrant bent into the right shape using bias. Sometimes to get the right look for such a simple shape I add a material to the rivet group with just the Normal Weight parameters set to less than 100. v19n doesn't play well with this parameter. The attached image show examples of rivet head renders. The first two image columns show the models rendered three ways in v19m with the default normal weight and normal weight = 1. These are the renders I've been gett…

Okay, here's a weird one. I've been messing around with getting my puppet horses set up and decided to add dynamic constraints to the tail. It shows movement in the real time preview, but then when I go to render, it renders the first pass correctly, but all the other passes render the tail in its original position and the result is the tail stays in place. Here's a quick render, showing what I'm talking about. See the ghost tail that's in a lower position? I'm not sure if this is the fault of motion blur or multi-pass. To make things even more bizarre. Doing a quick render in the model window shows no tail at all. So I rendered it again with single…

Imagination Technologies has come out with a couple of real-time raytrace graphics cards including the Caustic R2500. They are a bit expensive at the moment, but I expect they will come down over time. Is there any interest at Hash in adding support for these in the future? It would provide a great capability for previewing animations. You can read about them here: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/01/she...y-tracing-card/ -Vance

Hello everybody, many already know that little tradition of us and I did not want to forget to post it here. In Germany it is tradition to have a small christmas / advent calendar were you can open one small door every day and get for instance some sweets or a small gift every day till christmas in December. 3We (the company I work for) has one too – we show on funny, thoughtful or just nice commercial from all over the world every day in that. Another day and another door will be available :). And as always all the art work has been created with Animation:Master: 3We Adventskalender 2019 Hope you like it and let me know what you think :). This is yet another one of those general topics where I'm trying to formulate the question but don't have enough to get that done. I note that in many of my renderings the initial rendering passes that A:M reports tend to render pretty quick (note that this is with and without multipass on) even on the order of seconds. The initial antialiasing pass can take about that same time. During the antialiasing second pass things slow down considerably (a render last night took seconds for each of the initial passes but over an hour for the second antialiasing pass). Now granted... there may be a lot going on there in that pass and some of it might might not specificall…

Sorry posting this reply here as I'm unable to make a post in the v18d thread So thanks for the sample model Robert. Closer inspection shows that v18d is NOT randomly flipping normals, but it IS making things see-through?! In the screenshot here of your test model you can clearly see that the yellow pointers are all still facing outward as they should. Note, this screenshot was taken with 'Show back facing ploys' ON, so even if there were any flipped normals the model still should have looked solid. Incidentally whilst trying to get that screenshot A:M crash yet again. v17g is starting to look to me like the most stable Mac version.

For some reason I can't post in the thread where Walter originally posted his question about A:M's licence not being recognised. So... Yes I got that too after installing 18g. All I did to fix it was copy/past my current licence back into A:M again from my v17g version, (or you could copy/past it from any backup you have) and then relaunched A:M. If it's relevant I'm on OSX Mountain Lion still.

Hi, Okay...when did you people move from saving mainly the project file to mainly saving the chor file? Why did you do this? What advantages does this have? Is there really 'any' difference besides the .prj and .cho file extensions? What else is there to this? What else, if anything, are you using chor files for? FYI: I have only used saving chor files for large models that exceed what I call the workable patch limit--once you pass a certain patch count (at least in V14) response time becomes unworkable. Cheers, Rusty

I'm adding this topic because I'm sure to forget exploring it further... Filters are very useful for quickly finding resources in the Project Workspace (PWS). Also very useful is that we can save those Filters in the Project File. Inside the file itself (the text of the file that is) filters appear as in the following: Name=Filter for Models Model At least initially the order of the list is by order of how the resource is opened in the file so it can be handy to have some filters open as assets are added into a Project. In this way they can be more easily managed, renamed (by saving), etc. A downside of using Filter (besides the fact that they are …
