I'm really getting used to the A:M modeling tools. I literally whipped up this model (made in 2 hours). It's not perfect, it's not finished but it's a start. I could tweak for weeks now but I've limited myself to another 2-3 hours (spread out over a couple of days) of point tweaking. Then I'll texture and rig and maybe add a body along the way. I used no reference, therefore if you tell me it's porportions off I will tell you that it was a stylistic choice (lol).

For those of you who remember, I've been working on a personal project involving a clock - a clock which I'd ideally like to have fully animated inner workings. Following the honed wisdom of Vernon "I make paper clocks" Zehr I've bought a working cardboard kit clock and have begun constructing it with the intention of duplicating the mechanics in A:M. Now in the mean time, whilst waiting for glue to dry, I've build a very simple facade for the clock in A:M. This has also given me the opportunity to play with some of the new render features of 10.5 - namely mulitpass ray width shadows and multipass DOF. Here's a 32 pass test - There are no materials yet and just…

Well, in the interest of killing a little time waiting for my fiance to get home before taking off on a trip, I sat down and did a quick animation exercise. I think every animator and their brother has worked the Preston Blair Strut In-between exercise, so I thought I'd go ahead and get in out of my system. So, I grabbed my goofing around test model, Desert Rose, and started in. Three weeks later, I think I'm starting to take this a little too far.... Animation: http://www.backbreaker.com/~smudge/Images/...se_StrutLow.mov QuickTime 6, 360x240, 726k http://www.backbreaker.com/~smudge/Images/...tRose_Strut.avi DivX .avi, 720x480, 321k How far sh…

Well, I had a moment to sit and work on another set piece for my animation. It is, as the subject indicates, a coat rack (or hat rack if you prefer). The textures are not final. I just threw them on there. Comments, questions and general observations about life are welcome.

This is not really a "wip", it's more of a "w-asap". My entry in yesterday's Animation Showdown at digitalrendering.com. where_is_it_320.mov (270K QT Sorenson 3) Basically, you get four hours to animate, render and submit a character animation on the assigned theme. This time the deal was "Where Did I Put That?" My attempt is not fab, but some of the entries often are knockouts. It's also fun to see how others interpret the topic. Showdowns happen every wednesday. If you've got your character (or Thom) rigged, and can think/work fast you must give it a try.

Well, I have resumed work on me pet-project and have been adding things to Peg's Mansion as well as colouring it in! It still needs work on the tree leaves and bark, and the obvious tile pattern on the tower - but hey! - I have never really done this texturing bit before I have the '3D Painting & Texturing' book on the way which should help alot! Looking forward to your comments

Ages ago, I put up an animatic of a short piece featuring a cricket who resorts to modern electronics to improve his chances with the ladies. I've *finally* gotten around to actually animating one shot for this. Any comments or nitpicks at any level - modeling, lighting, animation, etc. - would be very welcome. http://www.digins.com/jack/cwip3.mpg (1MB) I created a reusable "handheld camera shake" action based on Sotiris Gougousis' excellent "Expressions in AM" tutorial; I'd be happy to post that if anyone's interested.

All these fantastic BMW models in progress reminded me that I hadn't finished my Formula 1 car model. It isn't too far away from being finished. It still needs wheel hubs and brakes, camera housings and a bit of work on the rear diffuser. Other than that, I'm quite happy with it. I will add panel lines using image maps. The driver model is close to being finished too. Can't quite get the helmet shape right. I like really dirty images ;-) so the final textures will probably reflect a car that has gone a race distance. No showroom shines for this puppy! What I would really love to do though is a wet weather shot. Puddles, reflections, rain, particle sp…

Hi all, Yes, I'm still alive! I've just been working on other things, is all... Anyhoo, I finally got round to sticking the last leg on my model. The only problem is, her pelvis looks like a triangle, and the legs seem blocky... I've tried smoothing it out, but I need to step back and invite some critique, so: 3PL Far Shot 1 (gaah! help me out on her pelvis, please!!!) I know there's a lot to be fixed with this walk cycle, but 'I'd appreciate any help all of you could offer. This is my first walk cycle, so it sucks, it's straight out of the book - or as close to it as I could get. I hope to address your critiques one at a time, but I'm sure that's going to put me into next year as far as the next render goes. but anything you could offer would be appreciated. The link address is: http://homepage.mac.com/teamguy/PhotoAlbum6.html Go to the Graphite file sharing link to download the walk cycle AVI.

Here's the first result that I'm willing to share as a WIP. Eventually she'll be Saturn Girl from DC Comics Legion (of Super-Heroes). The face still needs some smoothing. The eyes are from the Animation:Master 2000 handbook by Jeff Paries. I only tweaked the Iris area by moving it inward. In some lighting situations, it'll look cool, as it'll have a hilight in the shadowed area. That's the theory, anyway. Still getting the hang of renders and lighting in A:M, being used to Carrara for lo these long months. Plan on checking out the Forest or ARM for some tutes on them. Any suggestions? I used the SAY boneHed as reference, as a number of other resources. The …

Extending on from the tree making threads this is a test project , with only two planes and three materials. The sky is skytracer, the landscape is a darktree landscape texture which shades surfaces facing up with a grass like texture and vertical surfaces with a rocky surface. The forest is an AM11 fur material with tree images mapped onto the fur "strands". The animation render is a single pass multipass so there are quite a few artifacts. With some fine tuning of fur emmitters I think the trees can be considerably improved and the lighting is only test lighting. Still I thought it was worth showing

Here's a sword I'm working on. The weird marks along the blade are actually runes, but jpeg & the low resolution sorta kill the effect. Also, the god-awful background is for testing reflectivity . Any suggestions or really harsh, scathing critiques are welcome.

Hi, I'm in the middle of making a character walk. I've been following the manual to the letter on how to do stride lengths. I've done it and added my character to a path, however, it talks about an ease constraint in the walk properties....it's not in mine as you can see in the pic. How do I get it?

Car Model?
by age234- 2 replies

I know that questions like this pop up often, but... Is there a kind soul out there that would be willing to put together a medium-quality Yugo Koral (Tempo) car model? (photos) It would have to be medium-to-high quality on the inside, medium-to-low quality on the inside. The interior in the back seat would only need to be low-quality. I would take care of the texturing myself (with the aid of well-labeled groups, and many of them). Quality-wise, it has to hold up to a live background (shot on DV) in which it is mainly seen from the front in close-up, with some medium and long shots of the rest. I am using it in a short film I am working on for schoo…

Hi Evre1 I've finally got some images to show. Here are some frames of the music video I'm currently working on. Please note that the steppy kind of effect is due to interlacing/deinterlacing. I don't know how to paste more than one image in a message, so I will post the next 3 images in consequtive replies. Please let me know what you think. Oh by the way the video will be wide screen and that's why the images are so disperportionate. (16x9) Hope you like... Francois

IDL stood for Interactive Distance Learning. This is an opening I made to start off training broadcasts we used to do back when Nortel was somewhat richer than it is today. It was meant to represent the Distance Learning concept of people from various locations gathering "virtually" (a real happening word at the time) to hear from a remote instructor. I did everything except the video montage near the end. I think I was using A:M v5 at the time for the 3D, Strata MediaPaint for the fireballs and Adobe After Effects to tie it all together. The music is from a library we licensed. Links you can right-click on to download in QT or WMV appear on: http:…

Here is a QuickTime link to my short "Marboxian." Some of you may have seen this at the Hash film show at SIGGRAPH; Ottawa; or one of a few other screenings. It's picked up a couple of minor awards, and audiences -- including, I'm told, a roomful of very sleepy children, once -- seem to like it. Link. Two warnings: First, the file is 114MB (12 minutes at good quality). Second, it's hosted through my cable modem, and I can't guarantee decent bandwidth. (Mike Muncy's been great to me, but I really can't afford the kind of bandwidth I'd need to host it off his servers. Or... much else right now. *sigh*) Keep democratizing- -M@
