http://premiereclip.adobe.com/videos/GwoAtou7EY5 I have no other information on this but realtime facial motion capture is always going to be a useful thing. I suppose the real trick would be to export the captured data for usage elsewhere (such as in A:M). For those of you that use Adobe CC, they are accepting signup for beta testing. DIsclaimer: The video was taken by an audience member so the audio is pretty rough. Here's a bit more from their site: This relates to something I was trying to set up in A:M a few years ago. Not facial capture from a webcam... that is way beyond me... but driving bones/motion via Group Names, which is something A:M…

Hi, I've been wanting to ask about this for some time now... Every time I attempt to apply a decal to a model, I get fragments of other jpegs and whatnot that appear as the decal in A:M. I can't make accurate decal applications as a result. It's really weird. It has always been the case and I've had to do all sorts of voodoo to correctly apply a decal. Is A:M designed to work best with a PC? I have those continued problems like not being able to open files unless I switch to the finder and click on some random file in order to go back to A:M and use the open file commands. I am just wondering, in this case, if there is a way to get the decals to appear correctly …

Looks like Keith will be closing down his store for good on March 1. You can get his entire 61 video animation tutorial series for $19 Although he is not demonstrating in A:M almost all the concepts will translate to A:M. Some of the early videos suffer from primitive screen capture but they get better as he gets better at it. At that price, I can't imagine passing it up. If even one video is useful to you it's a bargain.

This is pretty much textbook, animation school jumping here. Notice how the legs have extended to nearly a straight line in the direction of motion before they leave the ground and likewise, the arms have extended as far forward as they can go also. This gets the most mass moving in the intended direction before power is lost when the feet leave the ground. The tail action is a bit counter intuitive; instead of trailing behind, he is flinging it forward to get mass moving for the same reason the arms are thrust forward. http://youtu.be/UMv5pvsrzRU The landing isn't a standard landing on the ground but catch the overlapping action of the body hitting …

The Foundry has joined in the current trend of free software in anticipation of future purchases. And note this isn't just the standard Nuke release but the full Nuke X and Nuke Studio package also. Those paying attention know I'm a fan of Black Magick's Fusion and while Fusion is more accessible (IMO) due to its simplicity, Nuke will be easier to understand for most folks especially when trying to integrate audio and carry out basic NLE operations. I'd say the learning curve for Nuke is a bit steeper than for Fusion but there are also more resources available for Nuke as it's become one of the defacto compositors of late along with The Foundry's other tools. Hey guys when I have a shape which I have drawn out like so . . . And I want to attach another splines to it, the curve gets " disturbed " - is there any key etc. that I need to hold down so it keeps the existing curve on the second spline / object ?? Been a while but I remember it used to do this before too ?? Spline drawing would be awesome if it worked like illustrator . . . hmmmm . . . Just remembered that you can import AI into AM - but trying to create a surface by joining the shapes to create a mesh did the same thing last time I was building a model . . . please shed some light on this anyone ! Thanks in advance.

Hey all, is there any resource out there concerning texture creation including how the "pattern" on the graphic is translated to the model (for instance, if I'm creating a human skin texture and I put a single age spot in the dead center, how will that be displayed on the model?) Is a texture just a glorified decal that's repeated over and over? Thanks, Rich

There are ways to try Windows 10 and get back your old OS if you don't like it. If you decide within 30 days Windows 10 will ostensibly do the roll back for you. Alternatively, you can do a disk image of your OS drive before you upgrade and use it to revert later. I only recently discovered that Windows 7 can make a disk image for that purpose. how to roll back windows 10 to windows 7

I haven't plugged anything from Aaron Blaise in quite awhile (although he's been quite busy). Aaron has just released a video that outlines what I find to be missing from most computer animation lipsync/dialogue and something that quite often character rigs don't allow for out-of-the-box. In short, it's not about the mouth shapes so much as it is squash and stretch and shape change of the whole face and body. Well worth the few minutes it'll take to review the lesson: xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYPx6sGZzow

Nothing to do with A:M - not even CGI, but a beautifully made and inspiring stop motion short by estian artist Anu-Laura Tuttelberg. Partly done in wet clay, thus the main character had to be completely re-modeled for every frame. No lamps were used in the shooting, only the existing daylight coming through the windows in the studio. https://vimeo.com/89515712

I can think of several downsides to such technology but it's hard to deny the potential.

For those of you that want to delve into the world of PBR materials and texturing this might aid you in getting that ideal texture onto your model in A:M. Basic workflow would be to export OBJ models from A:M which would then be used as the basis for texturing your spline based models in A:M or to import as Props. This was (apparently) the the primary program used to texture that real time animation recently featured by Unity 3D and according to the hype (and 3D world) is 'this year's best texturing application'.* I note that there is currently a 40% off banner on their site so for those with the $ to splurge it might be worth investigating. I haven't seen a topic related to this movie and... given the interest in stopmotion around here thought a post might be in order. I saw the film last week and thought it was a 'perfect' movie on many levels. By perfect I mean so carefully crafted and finely detailed that I was completely captivated. I was impressed by it's sense of originality and yet many elements of the familiar as well. The story itself... well crafted. There is a lot to talk about relative to 'Kubo' to include how computer modeling and animation drove their 3D printing) which continues to bring stopmotion into the digital age. A side topic of interest to me is that of the physical aspe…

Computational Thermoforming is an old technology (paints applied via immersion in water) modernized an applied to 3D printing with impressive results: xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFkVxurKeAs More closely aligned to the older methodology, hyrodgraphy is highly useful as well. Both approaches are familar to those who texture models in Animation:Master and other programs. The trick being to do the texturing as precisely as possible with minimal passes to achieve the desired results. That (wet method) can be seen in a more modern form here: xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlUhPrAqiY0 There are quite a few youtube videos that demonstrate the h…

Mark Largent brought this to my attention on Facebook...Walt Disney died 50 years ago today. A whole universe of things have happened since then in just 50 years. So much has changed and so much has come and gone and come and gone again. I'm just old enough to remember him introducing "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" each week on Sunday night TV. I had to imagine the color since we were too cheap to get a color set. That and "Bonanza" were the big watch-TV-with-popcorn-and-a-root-beer-float event for our family. I recall my mom showing me this drawing or one like it in the morning paper.

Hi all, FYI finally got some time to get back onto setting up AM after going through a learning curve to install Windows 7 on the old Mac Pro 2008 3,1 - finally did this, installed and new subscription and am happy to report, AM now works Flawlessly ! The old mac with a quadro fx 4800 card is no slouch and makes a damn good PC with the dual xeon processors and heaps of ram, now I am super happy and can get on with work, and possibly even get a new mac and have a great PC to run AM on it stable which happens to also be a mac he he, I have tested both ATI and Nvidia cards and they both work fine with no texture or rotoscope glitches at all. Exxxceellleent !

Way back in the day Computer Graphics pioneers Jim Blinn and Ed Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith conducted lectures on their work to young and eager minds that were interested in pushing the technology to its full potential. It would have been wonderful if someone would have thought to record some of those lectures. And they did! The lectures dive more deeply into subject matters we are well acquainted with to include splines and patches: xhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNXre0qpHjdhC29xH8WkKnw/feed From my perspective, this timeframe was while I was in h…
