I have this train wagon. Modeled and UV mapped in Blender. Texture painted in 3D-Coat. Imported as .obj into Animation Master And confirmed that UV's are ok: Everything is nice and tidy and okay UNTIL.... ...I render the train in the final scene/choreography. Then an extra white line magically appears on the roof!!! Where does it come from?? Anybody have any idea??

I'm not starting it or organizing it or anything but... since there is going to be an A:M Version 19 it is quite likely there will be a V19 mascot contest sometime soon. Our A:M modelers (that would be all of you) may wish to start thinking of ideas for entries in that regard.

I was just about to launch a bug report because every time I tried to create a preview icon in A:M I was being shown the desktop. I then thought perhaps it best to post to the forum to see if others were seeing the same thing. Then I thought about how unstable my entire system has been of late (I haven't restarted my computer in a long time) Then I thought that resetting A:M should be tried before anything else (yes, and especially before reformatting my harddrive!) And it worked. Now I can create preview icons. Note to self. Here's what I think contributed to the problem AND what might also relate to some other problems, especially when working with older fi…

Have started trying to model a Trial motorbike for use in the current project. They all seemto have spoked wheelsrather than the alloy type used by road racersa nd production types. What might be the best way to model the spokes ? I recall someone suggesting using "render as lines" to a similar question in the past. Have tried that but, it came out as a solid disc. Deleted the rim part, leaving the splines behind, and they don't show up as lines, although that is selected under properties. Does Toon render have to be engaged for that to work or, am I missing something ? ( again ) Thanks simon

Doh! I just had one of those painful reminders that we should save often and save with incremented filenames/numbers. I had spend entirely too much time modeling a character when I thought to save the model. All is well. Then I began to adjust the color of groups in the model. Everything working fine. I'm really starting to like the progess of the model. Then I accidentally enlarged a group and it took over another section of the mesh, giving it the wrong color. A quick undo didn't work as anticipated and then I deleted the entire mesh except for the eyes.... Gah! No problem... I can fix that. Then... My fat fingers and dull mind accidentally Con…

So I've been using A:M since 1999-2000 as many of you have. And just like all you others, I've watched the software experience great strides, successes, and growing pains. As for my own work using A:M, I've experienced uncountable "user errors"(I laugh at myself as I think of all the errors I've made), and struggled at times with bugs, glitches, long render times, my own mistakes, etc. BUT today I ran a short render and sat back marveling at how far A:M has come and improved. Now whether I've improved so much, who can say. BUT my hats off to the team for pushing ahead and implementing things that have helped us artists soo much. Thanks for putting time into …

I was just about to start celebrating after Robert helped me mix Toon and normal on the same model in a render. It was going to save a lot of time. Then I saved the project and odd things happened. I had modified one of the models, Delivery Man, that came with AM, giving him a beard and a dress shirt. This is what it looked like with Normal render. V17, OSX When I did a Toon render ( before he new modifications ), I noticed some mesh penetration, I tried Robert's suggestion and was really pleased with the result, except I noticed some more penetration and spent a while fixing it. Saved it and went out to do some analog 3D while it rendered …

Having spent the last few days trying to get some maps applied it seemed like a good idea to test them out in a scene. When I did I got a strange result. The two figures in the same scene rendered completely differently, even though the settings are the same This was the initial result, with the maps in place. ( also found a problem with the hair around the right ear ). Notice the difference between Bill and Doris? I went back into the properties panel to make sure the settings were the same, aside from the colour. Got the same result The above was all in V17g Opened the cho file in V18p and embedded everything needed, saved as 001B before testing aga…

When I first tried my Wacom stylus pad with A:M on my Windows 10 Surface Pro 4, I got some pretty wacky, annoying behavior (not caused by A:M, BTW). The following tricks cleared up these problems. How to get nice performance from a Wacom stylus pad on Windows 10: A few things to disable: In the search window on the Windows Settings page type "flicks" and select "turn flicks on and off". This opens the "Pen and Touch" configuration window. (For some reason typing "Pen and Touch" only provides you "pen and touch information", which is not the window you want.) On the "Flicks" tab, uncheck "Use flicks to perform common actions quickly and easily"--hope you don't…

This may sound strange, my apologies if it does but, does anyone have any advice on how to animate a figure on the diagonal? By which I mean, If the direction of travel is perpendicular and in straight lines then it is very straightforward ( pardon the pun ), I have two figures already done but, the third is coming in at an angle to the target and I am having trouble getting the movement working because its not perpendicular to the view angle. I'm sure I've done this before but, the afternoon tea has not dispelled the clouds.. Any advice gratefully received. simon

I'm working on rigging a character right now that has black bead eyes (like the Peanuts characters) that can track slightly around his face to give him the illusion of looking around. I'd like to add a bit of expressiveness to his eyes by adding equally simplified eyelids that would render as a flat line or an arc. To do this, I created flattened spheres and pose sliders to control their up/down and arc properties. I was just about to start with poses that would conceal the eyes as the lids close but stopped when I realized I was about to have a huge problem with this approach: if the eyes are looking anywhere but straight ahead, I had no strategy for making sure they sta…

For whatever reason, the program had the cobblestone pattern going one way to the left of the canal that the Bridge of Sighs spans and another way on the right side. I could not rotate the pattern to the right until I split it off from the one on the left and rotated it. I gave both the same properties, but for whatever reason the texture on the left ends up much darker than the pattern on the right. I am using Version 18 of A:M. I am also interested in knowing if there is a control for darkness of a texture and where that control is. Here is the example I am describing:

Because this may need a little research and I don't want to waste live-Live Answer Time-time resources I'm posting this here. I may ask this or related question during a future sessions unless I stumble upon proper solutions before then. The setup: Randomizing an initial setting Given a model placed in a choreography that moves from left to right (in simplest manner possible for demo purposes): How do we setup the model so it will appear at a random height each time the cycle repeats? - The model should begin at the random (seeded) height then move at that same height/trajectory horizontally - When the cycle begins again the model should appear at a new rando…

repeating Decals?

Hello Hashers- I am using v 19.0i on a Windows 7 machine and I have an animation cycle with 15 tga files that have alpha channels. I slapped that 15 image sequence on a flat model and am trying to get the 15 images to repeated endlessly on that flat model. When I use the "repeat" function in the decal properties menu it causes the decal to only reproduce itself as tiny versions of itself. What I was hoping for was simply a command that would cause the 15 image cycle to repeat endlessly. Does anyone know how to do this? Many thanks! Tom

Simple question. Is the Community Tab in A:M still used? I've created a login for it, but it never works. Says I login doesn't exist, even though I just created it. So, I was wondering if it's still in use? Is that still supported? And is it separate from the forum community? And on that note, is there a Discord community, or anything like that?

For no apparently good reason... I've always thought the audio file from TaoA:M needed a longer pause before the 'punchline' delivery. Today I added it (and some noise) to keep the pause from sounding out of place. (wav file attached below) The whole idea of the timing of dialogue delivery is a fascinating one. This bit of dialogue follows the basic pattern of such things as joke telling that is storytelling in simple form; three acts... for four if you are counting the spaces inbetween the keys. What is Keekat's secret? What can't anyone seem to keep it? Tune in next episode for more thrilling adventure! …

I'm trying to freshen up my older models. Most are importing pretty well. I have one (ver 9.1), so far, that causes A:M to crash before it fully loads. It's not a big or complex model. Is there a way to step through the load to find out where it's hanging up? Is there some sort of conversion tool somewhere? I looked at the text of the .mdl file, which was not corrupted. First glance, all looked normal.

Not really... it has been used in many, many instances like that over the last 7 years or so and I think it should be fine today especially if you count in the fun I had with it . I'm having issues in v19o with rendering normal maps on non-rectilinear patches using anything thing other than a final camera render in a chor. At the top of the attached image are shown five flat surfaces. The left-most four patcher is similar to the surface that I was modelling when I discovered this. The next three surfaces have the same outline but each is built with a different patch layout to see its effect. The right-most surface is a reference square 4x4 patch plane. All patch normals are aligned. The same normal map image is decaled to each plane. Isometric views of these five surfaces are rendered as 5 pass progressive or 16 pass final in a modelling …

I've been itching to start up creation of a game and thought AM could be a great tool to create the art for it, particularly characters, objects, maybe even tiles and environment stuff. I did a search and found info about 3D models (for Quake, etc), but I didn't find anything specific to creating 2D art. It would be from a side view, so a flat, orthographic camera would be necessary for sure. Are there any resources I've just not found yet on how to set up a scene for something like that? Thanks

A few textures from Filter Forge, a texture generation program, rendered out and cylinder mapped to a simple A:M shape. PRJ and bitmaps: FF tests005.zip They have a free 30 day trial you can get. It's a serious power user program but their library has thousands already made for you to download and use as is. If you like it, they have run "50% OFF SALE- LAST DAY" two out of the last five days, so I suspect they will do that again some time. Full screen to see detail. Luna, Wasteland, Crystal, Tiles... I've never tried a "Spring System" before! They were introduced as part of the previous cloth system. Although that scheme is gone, the tools for making springs are still there. Unfortunately, the essential "bone to spring" constraint seems not to survive a save and reload. That will be a bug to report.

Open the attached project in v19.5a. It has two versions of the same model. On the left in head_jungle_queen_v19pt5a_no_avg_normals.mdl, you can not change the normal weight of averaged normals because there is no "Average Normals" YES/NO switch in v19.5a. You can try changing the value of "Normal Weight" but it has no effect. On the right in head_jungle_queen_with_avg_normals_from v19p.mdl you can change the normal weight of averaged normals because this model was opened first in v19p and the "Average Normals" switch was set to YES. v19pt5a_no_avg_normals_embed.prj

This issue may not be fixable if it's an unavoidable side effect of how AO works but I'll submit it anyway. Here is a prog. render of the test model illuminated by a sun type light source. The model is a flat grey surface above which hovers four glass windows. Each window model (7 in. x 7 in.; 17.8 x 17.8 cm) is 4x4 patches surrounded by a tubular frame. The greenish glass has a 90% transparency. Each window is floating a different distance above the grey surface ranging from 2 in (5.1 cm) to 1/2 in. (1.3 cm). This is a final render(9 passes) of the model after you turn on AO = 100% with a sky blue global colour. Notice that the ambient light is still bein…

For a very long time, one of the nice tools in A:M is being able to constrain cp motion along an axis during a rotate; see embedded project. This is a top view of two tubes whose axes are parallel to the Z axis. Open this project in v19p (or any version going back to the last century) and select the central circular 4pt. spline of the green tube. Select the Rotation tool and rotate the tool 45 deg. counterclockwise while holding down the 3 key. The spline rotates but the movement of the cp's are constrained to only move along the Z axis. Open this project in v19.5a and select the central circular 4 pt. spline of the red tube. …

Hey guys, I am currently using A:M mainly for 3d print modelling of spare parts or small "helpers" and so I wanted to show a couple of them to you and what I am up to. Some images are rendered from the 3d models created in A:M for printing others are just the resulting prints. It is not character modelling or printing (most of the time) but stuff that serve a real life purpose. Most are small, some are bigger and they are not "great" innovations in general but just sometimes pretty useful. Hope you like a couple of them. If you like to see time laps of the printing, etc., have a look here: https://www.patchwork3d.de/blog-5-en These are the cor…

Look at this fabulously flexible result of rigging a face with the Transfer_AW plugin. Steve @Shelton modeled this great character (right) and then we pulled out a lo-res version (left) with just enough splines to cover the essential landmarks of the face. We rigged and CP-weighted that with some minimal bones for the jaw and lip corners and then used Transfer_AW to interpolate that lo-res rig to the hi-res mesh. It would need some further fine-tuning but this is a huge time saver for rigging a face. TAW Hans.mp4
