good evening, When I export in Obj format a model with groups, the groups are well exported in the Obj file. On the other hand, if I apply a UV to the model, the groups disappear in the exported Obj file. Are there some things specific to do to export UVs and groups in the same Obj file? Thank you in advance for your responses.

I'm trying to refresh my memory. I know that if we select a channel we have the option (via Right Click) to 'Reduce' keyframes. This however isn't practical when there are a whole lot of channels to reduce. I will guess the best way to proceed might be to Bake Action and then increase the Tolerance setting. Is that correct or am I wondering off in the wrong direction?

In this (non-A:M) rendering, depth of field is achieved as postrender blurring via a generated depth buffer. I wonder of this same technique can be used in A:M? This would for me be preferrable to the standard way of doing dof in A:M, which involve loooong (sometimes up to 20 minutes) rendertimes to look good (as comparison the above picture rendered in a little under 2 seconds, including the blurring process). Apparently there IS a depth buffer present in A:M, but I have never come to grips with how to use it. It would be so nice if this could be done inside A:M itself without having to use some compositing software like After Effects (which I cannot a…

Is it possible to edit a decal stamp ( a long time ) after it has been applied ? It is only as I get to a closeup shot that I find that there is a patch on a face cheek that the stamp missed. A bit of a clanger on my part. Rather than go back and redo it by flattening the model and starting over again, can it be done abother way ? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you simon

I bought the current version last week and was going to migrate over to using V18, rather than my more usual V17. However its giving some trouble I have a project, set up in V17with all the files embedded ready to use and the map pathways clearly set out. When I try to import that into V18 it imports the models and the animationm some of the maps but, NOT all of them. The paths are retained in the file details but the image is left behind. When i try to reconfirm the file by following through the path and identifying the file, it doesn't accept the input. If I try to import the map to then reapply the map it does not import the map as requested. Can abyone k…

Hey Everyone; I know I have said this before but I can now see light at the end of the tunnel. I have one more test for my job in the next few weeks, then a 2 month break. It does not look like work will slow down any time soon but I'm going to they to put more time Into Hash, Inc. Since the break from testing will free up some time. Here is what is on the list now. As it stands now fixing anything not critical on the web site side will be delayed until Hash, Inc. starts the new server move. What comes with the server move: New Store with everything but serial numbers imported AMStils and AMFilms will be moving to IP.Board I have not had time to test the move but it…

Every time I purchase a subscription, it seems impossible to do so without emailing Jason. I pay, I get an activation number, but what then. I download the last version and try to open it I get 'RLM error-3, Please email support@hash.com to actitvate via email'. This or similar happens ever since the darned subscription thing is in place. The purchase site is hopeless, with outdated options etc. and not once could I upgrade without support. Seems to me a waste of Jasons' time

That little notification window thingy is now appearing to suggest I have a few more days on my current subscription and it's always a good time to reflect on where I've been in the past year and where I might focus my attention in the future. It's been a great journey thus far and yet I remain confident the best is still ahead concerning the potential for creativity with Animation:Master. What a great 'little' program A:M continues to be. Lots of shiny stuff out there but even after all these years nothing compares. I guess what I'm trying to say is that while I'm at that cross roads of recommitting to another year of A:M I still don't have a solid plan to pro…

I had asked if it was possible for a rounded edges shader in AM a long long time ago. Seems that Houdini 16 has it now. Not sure if much dev is going on with AM these days. Seems awfully quiet.

I've discovered a bug that crashes A:M v19.0 on my Win10 machine under very specific circumstances. Before I submit a bug report, I'd appreciate someone to check my work to make sure I'm not missing something. All required files should be in the zip file including the following image showing the chor layout (top view). Thanks Open displ_bug_test.prj displ_bug_test.cho shows grid_test_a.mdl within the camera's field of view while grid_test_b.mdl, located at X=550, is outside the camera's view both models are identical and have displ_bug_test.jpg decaled to both of them as displacement maps the chor uses sky_small.jpg for image based global ambience with inten…

A "Drivers" folder seems to show up under a model in the Objects folder when you change a parameter to something that was external to the model. For example, if you drop a green shiny material on model of a vase, your vase will become green and shiny. If you edit the color of that material in the shortcut that is in the model rather than in the original material in the Materials folder, a Drivers folder will be added to the model that seems to contain that custom change. Or does it? If I delete that Drivers folder, the custom change I made doesn't go away. For further confusion, these drivers sometimes acquire keyframe curves with values changing over time…

Having some trouble with renders using Ambient Occlusion. This was rendered with 5 passes and Ambient sampling set to 100%. Its a reflection in a glass surface but, I've had similar troubles in non reflective surfaces too, although this is the most extreme example so far. This is it without ambient settings The ambient render is VGA because its taking a very long time to render at 1080. Can anyone kindly suggest a cause and possible cure for the problem ? Thank you simon

I have been doing quite a bit of pewter castings and they are antiqued. Curious if I can apply a decal to a prop in 19? Also need to create a texture that can fill in the dents and recesses but keep the tops shiney (pbr) but I don't want to have to use a 3rd party program like 3d Coat to do this. Can this be done in AM? Is there a stock shader floating around that can be close enough? Sorry for the edit, found a better image of base product so you can see how they look.

So I have used V.18 for a long time. On my older Vista system(Never had a problem) But I switched many months ago to using my Windows 10 cpu. Suddenly this week, everytime I render, my computer cuts off randomly. This has begun to repeat over and over. I don't have time to do any R&D. Has anyone else had this issue on Windows 10? or V18?

Having spent the last few days trying to get some maps applied it seemed like a good idea to test them out in a scene. When I did I got a strange result. The two figures in the same scene rendered completely differently, even though the settings are the same This was the initial result, with the maps in place. ( also found a problem with the hair around the right ear ). Notice the difference between Bill and Doris? I went back into the properties panel to make sure the settings were the same, aside from the colour. Got the same result The above was all in V17g Opened the cho file in V18p and embedded everything needed, saved as 001B before testing aga…

Hello, I feel like I have been posting about this to much lately but I'm trying to get back on top of emails today since I'm off work at a reasonable hour(only a 11 hour day). I have been working 50-60 hour weeks, I just got back from a training class in Detroit after working a 50 hour week. I keep telling myself I'm going to keep on top of email and Hash, Inc. support but I keep falling behind. Every time I think I'm going to have time something gets in my way, last weekend it was all me but the weeks before that it was my job, training, testing, studying and all of that. Maybe it's getting time for a new Image Contest but... it will need a topic first! Got ideas? Something not too narrow, not too broad, something we haven't done a lot before? Something that A:M users would enjoy putting their own personal spin on? One idea I have in the back of my head... "Planes, Trains, Automobiles" What are your ideas?

I suppose all of you have had to fix bad spline flows like the ones in the attached image to avoid those ugly creases. (I mean actual modelling, not porcelain.) How would you correct each of these cases? How would you like to be able to do so with a single click? Is there a recipe that would suit everyone?

Having some trouble with the Happy Families project and don't know if its caused by the Hardware, a mac mini running OSX 10.85 with 4Gb of RAM or, have I corrupted the file somehow ? It started with the last scene ( the one with the hard edged lights ) which was taking up to three hours to render some frames, 20 minutes the next, with variations inbetween. Started on the final scene and have manged to get the first pass at the animation done so, while waiting to review that, thought to setup the lighting properly. Introduced the set model but, every time I tried to render a quick test it crashed AM. That was in V17. So switched to V18 and tried that. With…

This was brought up in the Live Answer Time today and I wanted to mess around a little to see if I could figure out what was happening. What's happening, you can see in this image, is the cones of the lights are breaking through the lids of the boxes. At least the edges of the cones are. Adjusting "width softness" does factor into it somehow. In this example, it's set at 100% for the red light, 50% for the blue and 0% for the green. The oddity is more pronounced in the light set to 0%. Anybody got a clue what's causing this? I'm attaching the project. light_test_1.zip [EDIT] I forgot to mention that there's another oddity. The boxes all penetr…

I was just about to start celebrating after Robert helped me mix Toon and normal on the same model in a render. It was going to save a lot of time. Then I saved the project and odd things happened. I had modified one of the models, Delivery Man, that came with AM, giving him a beard and a dress shirt. This is what it looked like with Normal render. V17, OSX When I did a Toon render ( before he new modifications ), I noticed some mesh penetration, I tried Robert's suggestion and was really pleased with the result, except I noticed some more penetration and spent a while fixing it. Saved it and went out to do some analog 3D while it rendered …

While reading Martin's post from earlier today, Stolen Smells, I followed the link to YouTube, and then happened upon the Hash CG History channel on YouTube (very cool, if you haven't checked it out), and it reminded me of a project I had worked on in a day gone by... TBT Circa 1998 - Review and Herald New Releases 1998 conference! https://youtu.be/sHgrs2pu6Z8 I had worked on a video to announce all the books that would be released that year by the Review & Herald Publishing Association, and a live action Book Store Manager would be meeting some Interesting Characters! Have a problem I've not encountered before and wondered if anybody else has and if they might have a solution ? This is a screen grab of the scene with a quick render in place. It shows the composition including the two figures. However, when I render it to file from the same camera, with no other changes, this is what comes out. A close up of one figure. As most of you know, "Tin Woodman of Oz" was a full-length 3D animated movie made by this forum using A:M (of course). Some of you participated in it. I'm very proud of it though it never received the acclaim it deserved, I follow the YouTube views of the various parts. In 10 years, the most viewed scene is Nancy Gormanzano's "Hippogyraf Song." (Nancy did several of the songs, she was awesome.) The question I've always had was why does this scene have 3x as many views as the next most popular, and 10x as many views as most of the movie? Perhaps you could comment... p.s. I know it has hardly any views compared to most things. My goodness, I have a home video on …

Hi all, Is anyone else having issues with decals in v18a? In real-time they don't display properly on the screen but do render out correctly. Each time a model is loaded the misrepresented decals change. Here are some shots for your amusement. The images that get mixed into the decals can be from anywhere I have found; bits from my email window, bits of web browser window, Finder windows, or just random noise, anything really. I've tried all the usual resets and reinstall of v18a, but it persists.

We've had .ai (Adobe Illustrator) import for a long time. You can make an outline in a vector art program and A:M can import the .ai file and bevel/extrude it to make a 3D shape. That is great for making mechanical parts. However, inexpensive programs that can export a .AI file are still not common. V19 will add suport for SVG. SVG (ScalableVectorGraphics) is another vector format and is supported by free programs like InkScape. InkScape appears to be a full-featured vector graphics editor and should work well for A:M purposes.

Since I no longer have any 3.5 in. disk drive readers, it made sense to throw out the more than 100 diskettes that I found in a box today. Among the obsolete sound card drivers and Windows XP recovery disks I found my first A.M. installation, circa 1993. It's frightening to think that someone born the day I received these could be out of university by now. I'll add them to my stack of installation CDs just for completeness.

Ever since the MakeNormalMap.atx material was replaced by the Surface Normal buffer in the render engine I've always had unpredictable results. I couldn't seem to get a flat plane that was orthogonal to the camera to return a consistent color of 128, 128, 255. Sometimes it did but many times a flat plane would come up short on the red & green channel. So in the course of generating wrinkle maps for the seats in the street car, I ran more than a few tests and have found the answer; to get the correct colours the algorithm needs a full range of surface normals in the image. The following images are my proof. The top image shows the chor layout; a camera orthogonal t…

Because this may need a little research and I don't want to waste live-Live Answer Time-time resources I'm posting this here. I may ask this or related question during a future sessions unless I stumble upon proper solutions before then. The setup: Randomizing an initial setting Given a model placed in a choreography that moves from left to right (in simplest manner possible for demo purposes): How do we setup the model so it will appear at a random height each time the cycle repeats? - The model should begin at the random (seeded) height then move at that same height/trajectory horizontally - When the cycle begins again the model should appear at a new rando…

This thread began here ( https://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=48030&hl= ) but I didn't want to hijack Marcos' topic. I was complaining about the a lock mode screen render freezing up with the Win10 busy icon spinning uselessly in front of me with no way to interrupt the process. Gerald suggested; Not in my case, other than waiting for the "non-render" to finish it can only be interrupted by killing A:M in the Task Manager. This behaviour started with v18 and seems to be related to the new feature of storing the screen image of a high patch count model into a memory buffer. Start with only A:M running on the computer and I want to screen render…

Working in V17 I asked a while back about Toon render settings. As there was a save option, I had thought that, as I found a setup I liked, I could save it in the render options window and reload it later (?) I appears I was mistaken. Is there a way to do that and, if so, how do you do it ? Using the little sliders in the Toon option, "overide shading' drop down, its a case of doing it by eye to get the divisions required. Is there a way of doing it numerically so I can record it and reuse later? Thank you for your time simon

Sorry for the novel here. My team is nearing the end of post on our current film, and A:M's renderer has been on my mind a lot recently. I'd like to frame these notes as constructively as possible. Since it's gotten so long, I'll throw in some Big Headings for readability--and in hopes of making myself feel really important. The Bottleneck All of my films and many of my illustrations have featured A:M in one form or another. It's my utility knife app. I continue to find it an extremely powerful, user-friendly full stack modeling/rendering/animation package at an admirable price. It's beginning to show its age though. A 3D package is only as good as its out…

In the toon render options there is a tonal scale which allows you to set small tags along it which appears to compress the band widths of the tones in the scale(?) Is there a way to control the tonal range into narrow, definable bands, eg 16 or 12 or is it a case of adjusting the tags until the desired result is obtained ? Thanks for your time and consideration simon
