So I have used V.18 for a long time. On my older Vista system(Never had a problem) But I switched many months ago to using my Windows 10 cpu. Suddenly this week, everytime I render, my computer cuts off randomly. This has begun to repeat over and over. I don't have time to do any R&D. Has anyone else had this issue on Windows 10? or V18?

Rendering presents a wide category of interests but I'd like to discuss a few relative to what we have in A:M and what we can do as users to get the most out of that. While the discussion can certainly go far afield to include external rendering solutions the focus here is on what we can do with the internal renderer. Netrender is also an important factor to consider although for the purpose of this discussion I'd classify that as an external renderer also. At the heart of my present thinking is the idea of duplicate frames in a sequence and that may be where this topic starts and ends because for all intents and purposes in a purely 3D lit and rendered scene the…

This is a branch off of the other Rendering discussion that more directly relates to the camera and its settings rather than various rendering approaches and such. For instance, I don't ever recall using the 'Use for new cameras' setting on the Render tab. Perhaps I'm just very forgetful. The feature is highly useful for getting cameras to stay in sync with settings assigned in the Render Panel or at least start from that base. If you've got any tips or suggestions or favorite approaches regarding use of the Camera in A:M I'd love to hear them. I'll add a few more myself along the way. Added Tip: Just below the 'Use for new cameras' option is 'Sav…

I put a bump map on this model to simulate some wrinkles on the top, but although both top patches have their normals facing out, one patch shows the inverse bump result of the other... Just to try it, I did RMB>Renumber CPs... That fixed it! Don't know why, don't know how, but that did fix it.

repeating Decals?
by Guest Tom- 3 replies

Hello Hashers- I am using v 19.0i on a Windows 7 machine and I have an animation cycle with 15 tga files that have alpha channels. I slapped that 15 image sequence on a flat model and am trying to get the 15 images to repeated endlessly on that flat model. When I use the "repeat" function in the decal properties menu it causes the decal to only reproduce itself as tiny versions of itself. What I was hoping for was simply a command that would cause the 15 image cycle to repeat endlessly. Does anyone know how to do this? Many thanks! Tom

William Hennes @willaim is so busy doing cool things with A:M that he never gets around to posting it here, so I'm posting it for him! "Replacement" animation is a variation of stop-mo where, instead re-posing a clay or rigged model, pre-sculpted portions are swapped out for each exposure to create movement. head_animation.mp4

Every year it happens, go to open A:M and I get the 'subscription has expired' dialogue... crap, already?! I like to document my resubscribing experience here on the forum, so that it may help others, possibly illuminate Hash Inc. what a typical(?) yearly(since 2000) customer goes thru... but mainly because I hope NEXT year I will be able to pull-up this thread and read it if I get stuck... because every year I GET STUCK! (I do my home sub in a few months) SO- I go to the Hash store, update my address and user information no problem, add 1 $79.99 yearly sub to the cart, go to checkout. This year, I notice that Hash is really-really pushing the PayPal payment process-…

While rummaging through an old miscellaneous folder I found a plug-in from 2005 that, if I remember correctly, simultaneously changes the crossing bias at all cp's around a circular spline. It could be a nice time saver. I tried dropping it into my HXT folder but it didn't show up as a plug-in or wizard. Is there some way to "re-compile" it for v19p? Bottleneck.hxt

Have been working on the cpweights and other glitches for the past few days. when I noticed a rig problem ( entirely of my own making ) then tried to correct it without have to reinstall the whole rig. During that I inadvertently caused some bones to scale and, when I use the nulls to setup the finger poses I get some very odd results. Is it possible to readjust the values without having to reinstall the rig from scratch ? simon 2008 rig in V17 working in OSX10.68

This is in anticipation of next brief, so not urgent but,I was thinking of using the theme of a swing in a child's playground and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the best way to rig the swing? I was thinking about a kinematic or dynamic constraint for the rope but is there a more efficient way ? Any help gratefully received. regards simon

I have no experience of rigging so, when I adapted a model from a DVD some time ago, went with the rig installed I've insterted an extra bone since then ( for the lower torso, but thats not giving problems). Have lined up the feet and the legs in the model window but, when animated in an action window a twist or distortion appears in the ankles areas. Could someone kindly suggest what the problem might be and how to correct it ? Thank you for your time. simon LC Baby C.mdl

Have been trying to achieve a running style like that of the roadrunner in the WB shorts with very mixed results. Thought of another way to try in the meantime and wondered if anyone could kindly offer help on a couple of points ? Initially I set up an action for each foot then tried to put that on a path in a chor but that didn't seem to work, so tried to set it up using a path, but paths don't seem to be an option in actions ? Then tried to set it up in the chor but two questions, How do you get it to loop ( post extrapolation ? ) and can you then move it along using the track by moving the path ? regards simon Road_Runner.prj

One last question....completely unrelated to the decal mapping question. I am trying to create a plume of smoke like the kind that happens when a rocket is about to launch. (see the "red line" in the picture below) I am struggling to understand how the sprites can react to the force AND gravity and create that cool looking plume that rolls in on itself. In the zipped Project I attached I create an invisible channel to help shape the plume ........but my smoke is a dud. The project file is zipped (but it is in V. 18) so if any adjustments are made, please do them in V. 18...thank you, Any suggestions are welcome... Tom …

Howdy all! I'm looking for a good way to create an animatable hangman's noose for an upcoming project, but am stumping myself with how to texture the rope, ideally with some displacement to indicate the twisting structure. Either a procedural or image map solution would be fine, I think. Any tips or pointers to existing work that I can pick apart would be greatly appreciated! Chris

This is such a basic thing I wonder if there's a particular reason that it can't be done... We can scale and translate Rotoscopes, but we can't rotate them. This would come in very handy when you have rotos that aren't oriented correctly in an image. Is there an in-app workaround that I just don't know about? Is this something that could be implemented easily?

Hi. I just upgraded to version 18 and I am trying to import a video to use as a rotoscope for compositing. It appears that version 18 no longer supports .mov files. Is that the case? When I try a .avi file I get an error message that the file is corrupted or not a type supported. The same files work perfectly in version 15 (which I know is a big gap as far as versions go.) Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

I had created an action and placed a rotoscope to use as some movement reference. Saved my project, and when I came back and opened it a day later I found that the Rotoscope was not retained in my action file. This meant that my scale and translate settings (that I had not written down) were gone. This may have always been the case since I can't remember ever opening a rotoscope in an action window, but I was hoping that someone knew if this is an error or just the way it is. I did find that I could use Rodney's suggestion here to solve the issue, but it seems like a silly thing to not be able to hold the rotoscope settings. Thanks,

I finally decided to take the plunge. After skipping Lion all together, I figured I'd better catch up with the OS before I get completely left behind. I went out and bought a new HD and spent all of yesterday backing up my old HD in case this doesn't go well. After a lengthy download, I've installed Mountain Lion and went straight away to see if it had any adverse affects on A:M. By coincidence, this is the day that my subscription expired, but I'd known it was coming and had bought my upgrade last week. After pulling out the files so that I could get A:M to prompt me to activate it, I entered the activation code and started up v16b. Everything seemed fine …

It's always a good idea to save your files... that and close all the hundreds of other programs you've forgotten to close... you know... to free up memory. I think this guy was anticipating what was about to happen to him so I took a screen shot of the only thing left of him when things went south. So, don't forget to save your work! P.S. I'm still waiting for Windows to notify me of the solution.

Animating in an action window, I am working on a sneak got a little carried away and introduced an action object. I'd like to save the animation on the action object as a separate file , to be later brought into a chor. Is that possible and, if so, how do you do it ? regards simon

Hi, Okay...when did you people move from saving mainly the project file to mainly saving the chor file? Why did you do this? What advantages does this have? Is there really 'any' difference besides the .prj and .cho file extensions? What else is there to this? What else, if anything, are you using chor files for? FYI: I have only used saving chor files for large models that exceed what I call the workable patch limit--once you pass a certain patch count (at least in V14) response time becomes unworkable. Cheers, Rusty

I must be remembering incorrectly but... I thought when we hid Control Points in a Model or Project and saved the files they remained hidden when the file was opened again. Apparently I just imagined that because a test in an earlier version behaves the same as current version. I must be thinking of Locking CPs. Any thoughts or redirections? I've been using hidden CPs in some experimenatal ways but if they return to visible state when a file is reopened (after saving) that defeats a key part of the experiment.

I was trying to get a decal to scroll up over the surface of a flat model in the chor but couldn't manage it. Does anyone know of a way to do it ? I should perhaps explain further that, as part of a project at college, someone else designed a Logo which I then made in AM ( its a stylised H ). the intion was to then have some text scroll up the right column of the H within the chor so it could be rendered out as a mov file. Tried to changed the Y values of the decal over 5 seconds but it didn't seem to work that way ? Two related questions, Initially I tried to use a cookie cutter map to project light through a flat, so it would come out on the s…

This is just a ultra simple look at what the Repeat and Seamless settings do for images in A:M. Note that the default setting for images is to Repeat only once so the Seamless setting doesn't do much with that. Once there are two more more images repeating however then the Seamless setting will flip the images so that the textures/images match up for seamless tiling. In this way you could use A:M to perfect seamless textures but of course there are other paint programs out there that are designed specifically to do that. http://www.screencast.com/t/Ol1FdmJ3ym

Hi there, since i do like Raf Anzovins rig so much, and since I can not use TSM with my AM, and while I do not like to go always back and forth between two versions of AM, I thougt it might be a good idea to set up a rigg Anzovin style for the current AM 64 Bit version and use that. I know that Raf wrote a tutorial on his way of rigging loooong time ago. That tutorial was called "them Bones" or something, and in it, Raf explained in much detail how he rigged his yellow dog character. If anybody knows where I may get that tutorial or still has it somewhere and would like to share, I would be very happy! Thank you already, best regards …

So I learned my lesson never leave home with out a laptop. I'm sorry for the delay in getting the fix installed. But everything is fixed and running like it should. I should have been able to fix it from my phone but the last software update disabled the 'shift' key in a lot of apps I use. Which is not the best for working in a OS that is case sensitive. Once again sorry for the long outage.

Hello, So a problem with with one of our scripts was filling a folder with so many files that our server could not list it. The problem has been fixed but failed remove commands are really loading the server at this time. Apaches(runs the webpage) seams to be running fine but the proftpd(runs the ftp site) seams to be really slow and sending commands to the server is really slow. So tonight about 10pm pst I'm going to restart the server. It needed to be restarted any ways because of updates. The restart should be short but like always sometime updates can take bit of time I will post when the server has restart and back online. If anything degrades anymore though …

I've done this before and know that there is a specific place we have to look to set this but I forget. Perhaps someone can get me back on track. I have a faint recollection that this is best set immediately upon creation of the pose slider as well. The most basic example is the On/Off pose where the pose is set to On by default (which without setting is 'Not Set' by default) In the case of a percentage pose the example might be to set the default as 0 on a scale of -100 to 100. As I have to occasionally revisit this It'd be good to get this cemented in my mind. Thanks in advance! Edit: I may have answered my question already but I'm hoping my a…

Been a bit distracted recently by other work but, trying to get back into finishing Ska Lake properly. One of the things it was intended to do was to test the models. And it has definitely done that ! The young Boy ( Charlie) was adapted from a Make Human file and, it came with the pose of the arms down at the sides. All the models I've made in the past have used a T pose for the rig installation so it was something new to me. That pose seemed to complicate the installation of the 2008 rig but that may just have been my error. Now trying to re rig the model and wondered if there were any views as to the best setup pose to use ? T pose, arms at side or something alt…

I've been "bit" more than once by the way the Darkness attribute works when a light cast shadows. I know why the variable is there; it's a way to fake ambient light filling in the shade. But I have a problem with the way it affects specular highlights. It still lets them through, just attenuated. The specular highlight is faking the reflection of the light source in the sphere. Even if the shadow darkness is 10%, that "reflection" still shouldn't be visible. I have no idea whether it's possible for Stefen to fix this in the code but it would be a nice improvement.

Hello- I noticed this effect in the fantastic animated clip entitled "The Tale of the Three Brothers" from a Harry Potter's film. Her dress shatters as the character dies and if you notice, her dress shatters as small rectangles. My question is, is there a way to have a model shatter but customize the shapes of the exploding pieces? Let's say that you want the dress to explode like the different suits of a card deck (attached)...is that possible? Is there some way to pre-cut the exploding parts (with a cookie cutter map or...?)
