With the recent talk of Copy/Pasting poses I thought I'd revisit Dopesheets... For years I've wanted to put together a tutorial on the extended use of A:M's Dopesheet and have consistently failed to do it. The attached isn't much improved from that but rather than throw it away it might be of use to someone. Key points/takeaways: - Dopesheets are a powerful tool - Dopesheets are useful for more than just lipsync/phonemes - There are lots of things we don't know about A:M (lots of features we don't effectively utilize too) - It's vitally important to use numbers instead of letters when accessing some aspects of the Dopesheet workflow Standard di…

Is it possible to copy the key frames from one character in a chor and post them onto another using the same rig. If so what is the proceedure ? Have tried selecting all of character A's keys in the PWS and pasting on B's but it beeps to suggest not possible ? regards simon

This model was sculpted and retopoed in 3DCoat and then exported as an .obj. Then imported into A:M. In the last step several faces across the object disappeared. First I thought "flipped normals", but this does not seem to be the case. I have looked at the object in both Blender and Messiah Studio, and here everything seems okay. Anybody have an idea on whats going on? And off course how to repair, without destroying the underlying UVs of the object?

Hello, Just hours before my flight to Vegas I finally got Animation Master Chat up and running in it's new home! The machine is a new install and has some updating to do but I it should not restart till 3am(at this point I'm not sure I trust that though). If it does restart it will be fast so do not worry. You guys may even get to see my drunken miss spellings if I log in to make sure it's up while in Vegas. You may ask yourself can my drunken miss spellings really be any worse then my normal miss spellings. And the answer is YES haha! Email will be a bit slow while I'm out too, But I will try to get to them the few hours before I'm partying in the morning each …

Hi there, i am using AM with an one year subscription. Am I entitled to get the v.18 and use it until my subscription ends, or do I have to get a new subscription in order to do so? Regards Heiner

I’m sitting here wondering about two things that has absoluttely nothing to do with each other… 1. When baking an object in A:M, what is the connection between the figure “Resolution” and the size of the resulting bitmaps. It seems completely arbitrary to me?? 2. Did the option to turn off the splash screen make it into v.18? And if so, where is it? Anybody?

Hi, I just worked my way through some trouble with Video-Codecs and I found some interesting things which apply to A:M too. Many think, that you can only output uncompressed AVIs with Windows-Versions of A:M if you want to export a video-file. Since Apple dropped the support for Windows 64bit-Quicktime-Output, it seems hard to output directly to a video format from A:M (which still applies for MOVs), but it really isn't. What you need to understand is, that A:M 64bit is a 64bit-software and like that it can only use Codecs which are 64bit-compatible. (and if you use A:M for 32-bit on Windows, it can only use 32bit codecs.) I just tested it and A:M can e…

Every year it happens, go to open A:M and I get the 'subscription has expired' dialogue... crap, already?! I like to document my resubscribing experience here on the forum, so that it may help others, possibly illuminate Hash Inc. what a typical(?) yearly(since 2000) customer goes thru... but mainly because I hope NEXT year I will be able to pull-up this thread and read it if I get stuck... because every year I GET STUCK! (I do my home sub in a few months) SO- I go to the Hash store, update my address and user information no problem, add 1 $79.99 yearly sub to the cart, go to checkout. This year, I notice that Hash is really-really pushing the PayPal payment process-…

Recently started a new Sports Day project which is using a .tga image as a decal for the pitch markings, which according to my OS, is 2,554 x 410 pixels @72dpi and a file size of 95kb. If I look at the information for the same image as it appears in the Images folder in A:M it agrees on the dimensions but says it is 3.99MB!? That's but a big leap from 95kb! And it also seems to be enough to keep making A:M freeze and have to be forced quit if I try and pan over it with the camera. Turning OFF Show Decals and the camera moves freely and no freeze. On the plus side this decal, so far & touch wood, has always displayed correctly and not fallen foul of the usual …

OK so for the SciFi contest I want to have an accurate looking explosion in the image. The image will involve multiple layers: Background/Sky (Matte) Terrain model for the middle ground (in AM) My Warhammer Base (in AM) Explosion (??) Foreground Terrain (in AM) Lead Character (in AM) Now given I am going for a 'realistic' look and knowing how long it can take to render stuff, I am thinking that I will generate the explosion separately then apply it as a layer in AM. I want to create the explosion in AM if I can so I am thinking smoke and particles for the job. So deconstructing an explosion I have the blast and the shockwave. The shockwave seem…

A long time ago, in a different thread it was explained how to use Frame burn as a post effect to get the timecode burned in at render time. I should have thought of it before but, I rendered a sequence overnight and now need to go back and correct the errors. Frame Burn would have helped in that. Drat ! So it seemed it might be possible to do in a composite way by putting the renders on a layer and putting Frame Burn on those renders? However, when looking at them the file name is there but not the 00:00:00 time code sequence. The post effect is active, applied in the render settings is there another step I'm missing ? simon

Have been working on the cpweights and other glitches for the past few days. when I noticed a rig problem ( entirely of my own making ) then tried to correct it without have to reinstall the whole rig. During that I inadvertently caused some bones to scale and, when I use the nulls to setup the finger poses I get some very odd results. Is it possible to readjust the values without having to reinstall the rig from scratch ? simon 2008 rig in V17 working in OSX10.68

I know this is a perenial question, my apologies for that. I am trying to redo the model of the young boy for the dance project and decided to use retopology as a way of improving my modeling abilities ( not very advanced ), using the previous model as a base to work from. It worked OK for the body but, have encountered some difficulties with the face. I was trying to use the Cooper tutorial in TOAM as a guide and got this, when rendered it comesout with very noticeable creases Fine if it was me but not so good for a 11 year old. I am hoping to smooth out the other bumps with cp repositioning but can't seem to remove the creases. Can someone kindl…

Working in V17g under OSX 10.68 I'm trying to setup some pose sliders to move the fingers in the 2008 rig. I've previously been advised that its not best practice but, for what is presently underway, it works well enough. Managed to get them installed for one character but, the second is proving difficult. When I open the model in amodel window the relevant bones and nulls are visible. If I select the "New Pose" option the finger Bones and nulls disappear and only the finger controller and Hand bone are visible. Can someone kindly point out how to get the bones back to visible ? Thanks simon

Hey guys just reporting this ( is there a forum for errors and bugs for AM I am unaware of - or how do we submit these to Steffan ? ) Any hoo, Mac AM, running on Yosemite - when I import in any bitmaps as rotoscopes or decals they come in garbled as jpegs / pngs, the old tga seems to work some what and somewhere in this routine also causes crashes - especially when you want to delete an image . . . any clues ?? When you toggle between OPENGL & OPENGL3 in the options, its refreshes the image . . . then crash . . . just converted image to TGA and so far no crash . . . yet . . . it feels like I'm running AM through a virtual OS running on my Mac . . . I've encountered a similar problem before and my apologies for asking again. I'm trying a technique whereby I draw with oil pastels on clear plastic, photograph it and import into AM for use as a Cookie Cut decal. I made a little run sequence, converted it to png files with a background in each frame of pure white ( 255,255,255 ) applied that sequence to a flat with the white selected as the key colour. The first frame was as expected The second came out solid rather than cut I will go back tomorrow and convert them to alpha backgrounds but, in the meantime, can anyone kindly suggest what the problem might be ? regards simon

I'm running through the additions to v18M and am enjoying what I've seen thus far. It should go without saying that the TIF and PSD format plugins are much welcomed additions. (and for those of you that need to use an earlier subscription version of A:M it works well with those too. I was initially scratching my head about the 'Respect Z Order'/Shaded Mode selection option... it wasn't until I went back and read the changelog again and started experimenting that the lightbulb turned on. The main benefit at present appears to be for use with decals (nice!) but I've already used it to quickly work through images stacks too. I may leave that thing on all the time**. …

A project waiting in the wings is gaining ground but I've ran into a minor glitch that I"d like to see resolved. Specifically, I note that when changing the SVN repository setting to another location the TWO film repository URL gets tacked on to the end of the new one. This is only inside A:M Community and SVN can be run just fine outside of A:M so there is an easy workaround but I'm wondering if there might be something (a cache?) I need to clear in order for the SVN repository location/URL to be properly set? Any guesses or insights? A guess or two from me might be that the setting is stored in the WIndows registry or... A:M is finding the URL in a dif…

I seem to recall a simplemethod for doing this... Perhaps someone can set me on the right path. I have a material that is saved as two different materials. The main difference between the two is that one is set with displacement and the other is for color. Both materials can then be applied to a group to better control the texture. That's not part of the problem... just a little background/setup. I dropped the color material onto a different group in the model and tweaked the settings. I like the changes so want to keep that new material. The issue is how to save/export that material as a new material. If I stepped away from the computer for awhile the a…

Hello! So, I was just over on Twitch.TV, browsing their channels, and decided to see if A:M had any representation there. Surprisingly, there wasn't, and so I thought I'd come here and make a post about it. For those who aren't aware, Twitch.TV is a website that has been, traditionally, set up for gamers to stream their gameplay, for tournaments, etc. However, they've also expanded by adding a "Creative" category, where artists of all types will stream and demonstrate their skills with a variety of tools (including hand-drawn, painting, etc). There's also a presence of other 3D modeling/animating apps on there. Many game developers will do live streams showing them wo…

Hiya, So, I actually could/should have asked this during the get together, but I didn't think to. I've noticed that for some functions to work, you have to "click-select" a node. You can't box select it. Lathe is an example. Why is that? Is it something to do with how splines work? Or is it just something that was programmed that way, and remained so through all the versions? It's not a problem. It's just as easy either way, I was just curious if there was a reason behind it. Thanks!

Sorry for the novel here. My team is nearing the end of post on our current film, and A:M's renderer has been on my mind a lot recently. I'd like to frame these notes as constructively as possible. Since it's gotten so long, I'll throw in some Big Headings for readability--and in hopes of making myself feel really important. The Bottleneck All of my films and many of my illustrations have featured A:M in one form or another. It's my utility knife app. I continue to find it an extremely powerful, user-friendly full stack modeling/rendering/animation package at an admirable price. It's beginning to show its age though. A 3D package is only as good as its out…

Working in V17 I asked a while back about Toon render settings. As there was a save option, I had thought that, as I found a setup I liked, I could save it in the render options window and reload it later (?) I appears I was mistaken. Is there a way to do that and, if so, how do you do it ? Using the little sliders in the Toon option, "overide shading' drop down, its a case of doing it by eye to get the divisions required. Is there a way of doing it numerically so I can record it and reuse later? Thank you for your time simon

Ever since the MakeNormalMap.atx material was replaced by the Surface Normal buffer in the render engine I've always had unpredictable results. I couldn't seem to get a flat plane that was orthogonal to the camera to return a consistent color of 128, 128, 255. Sometimes it did but many times a flat plane would come up short on the red & green channel. So in the course of generating wrinkle maps for the seats in the street car, I ran more than a few tests and have found the answer; to get the correct colours the algorithm needs a full range of surface normals in the image. The following images are my proof. The top image shows the chor layout; a camera orthogonal t…

So I have used V.18 for a long time. On my older Vista system(Never had a problem) But I switched many months ago to using my Windows 10 cpu. Although I have Amv16 updated to v17 I have another error. It's not this version, but the earlier versions. You can ask why I want them both, but lots of files are twitched in versions. After installing Am v.11 I can update to v.12. When I do so, the the program bumps telling the disk isn't in the cdrom. Of course It is version v11 in the cdrom, but what is stopping the update? I thought it would be updated with the old disk in the cdrom. Also the update wants files from the ftp site, but that fails. It seems the site isn't there anymore, so how can I obtain these files? regards

This is yet another one of those general topics where I'm trying to formulate the question but don't have enough to get that done. I note that in many of my renderings the initial rendering passes that A:M reports tend to render pretty quick (note that this is with and without multipass on) even on the order of seconds. The initial antialiasing pass can take about that same time. During the antialiasing second pass things slow down considerably (a render last night took seconds for each of the initial passes but over an hour for the second antialiasing pass). Now granted... there may be a lot going on there in that pass and some of it might might not specificall…

We were discussing bullet physics in the Hangout today and I thought I'd see how it works on the Mac. Seems to be a problem with it. The properties box has a number of string errors and just trying to run the simulation with the default settings crashes the application every time. Here's what the properties box looks like: To be honest, I'm not sure this a feature I would ever make use of, but I'll do up a bug report when I get some free time.

A random test had me using the Muttiple Models on a Path wizard and unfortunately I get a crash each time I attempt it. Perhaps someone can verify? Create a simple model (to be placed on the path in the chor). In the Chor window create a Path In the PWS select the Path and Right Click (the only option should be Multiple Models on a Path) Follow the instructions and select your model and apply. At this point A:M crashes for me. Edit: Figures... as soon as I post I thought to check to see if the v18 MMoP.hxt file worked in v19... and it does. So, that would be the workaround if the v19 MMop.hxt is corrupted. The file that isn't working is dated 2/6/18 a…

I'm attempting to add parts to a model in a choreography using multiple actions, each action containing many action objects. When I add the first action, all the objects within it appear in the chor. But if I add another action, the previous one disappears. I read the manual about action objects and assumed the problem was related to "Hold last frame", "Transition to next action" and "Blend method". I thought the best combination was ON, ON & ADD. However I can only see one of the actions if the "Hold last frame" of the other is turned OFF. What am I missing?

Before I begin trying to find the source of this bug I'd like some opinions as to what might be happening. Attached are two "versions" of four sequential TIF files (545 through 548) from an on-going Netrender job. If there is a "b" (for bad) in the filename it is the first frame rendered by any one of the my four cores. If there is a "g" (for good) it was either not a Netrender first frame or it could be any frame rendered within A:M itself. I've numbered the files so you can sequentially show them bad, good, bad, etc. When I cycle through them on my monitor, the bad ones seem a bit darker and noisier but nothing that says "obviously this is what's wrong"; they're ju…

Hi everybody, since we are more or less all wearing some kind of mask or faceshield nowadays, it sometimes is a little bit harder to see the expressions on peoples faces who are wearing masks. I am not sure if people are aware of this, but I just did a small test and it works... You can even use one decal (UV set) to layer color maps with transparency over each other. Not sure if it helps a lot (maybe with 3d painting it could be nice for instance to animate wounds or skin changes or something like that?) but it was an interesting thing for me...
