pixelplucker Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I think there is a bug with displacements, For some reason the 1st stamp shows stronger than the rest. See the mdl attached. Simple small half round patch with a small decal that contains an alpha. Im still using 15d so not sure if this was fixed in the lastest version. rivet.zip Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Thanks for helping me out Stian Rivets.zip Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Pixel, your stamps look fine, but I am talking about a decal that is a map of rivets, not one single rivet decal stamped several times. This subamrine has over 3000 rivets, and I 'd like to avoid stamping those in AM. Making complete maps of large plates in Photoshop and then applying them in AM is much better. Now if Stain can only figure out what's going on with my maps??? Quote
agep Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Works for me. v15.0f Please test the attached project rivets.zip Quote
agep Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I have however seen similar artifact as you last render when I've had double up of patches Quote
pixelplucker Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Did you try to isolate the rivets from the background with an alpha? You will have to make them lighter than 50% gray because for some reason they will have a slight edge sunk down. I had a project that I ended up using an alpha for my displacement for some plates which worked out really well but the image was black and wanted the effect of sunken letters. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted July 20, 2009 Hash Fellow Posted July 20, 2009 There is a problem with displacement maps. Only one will be recognized on any patch. Any others will be rendered as bump maps. this patch has the same map applied four times but only the first is actually being rendered as displacement. Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 Stian: this must be a bug in V.13 because it took 12:14 minutes for the first pass to complete, and to top it off, the artifacts were as bad as ever. This is the project file you had no problems with in V.15. I know, I know, upgrade. Well, when it comes to making our house payment or upgrading, I pick the house payment and groceries. Thanks for testing the file Stian Eric Quote
nino banano Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Amazing model Eric2575...can`t wait to see the advances here, keep it up Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 Thanks Nino Well, I seem to have narrowed down the displacement problem to AO renders in V.13t. Displacement seems to work fine until I use AO. No matter. For the Wheelhouse I will use a combination of bump maps and geometry to portray the rivets. It's taken me some time, but I've finally gotten the bump rivets to look like I want in great part to Matt's help. Thanks Matt. Here is the render of the partially riveted Wheelhouse. Quote
Tralfaz Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 This model is so sweeeet Eric! Attention to detail is superb! Would really love to see you and Stian go head-to-head on a modelling project! It would be just too scary! Al Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Thank you for the compliment Al. I hope I never have to go up against Stian, because he is absolutely gifted, whereas I have to work hard as hell to even get close to what he does in his sleep Quote
thefreshestever Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 when i see your models, or stians, or al´s, i guess you all NEVER sleep i´m really curious how the actual brass model will look like... Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Hoffendlich ganz toll!!! Bin in Muenchen aufgewachsen. Here is a small update on the rivet progress. It's slow going because I am using old Disney photos and DVD footage for the most accurate rivet placement. Every rivet will be accounted for and there are over 30,808 of them. I should be done next year Quote
williamgaylord Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Boy, you'll have used up quite a few drill bits by the time you are done. I did re-roof my own house (nailing by hand), but that was only about 20,000 nails. I think Disney just glued M&Ms onto the original and painted over them. That is a tremendous amount of detail, but what a beautiful model. Perhaps you should use it to create a virtual tour. You could charge admission, or maybe sell it on an interactive DVD. Nice work! Quote
Paul Forwood Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Another incredible model, Eric! Well done! Quote
Zaryin Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Those rivets are just making it even more filled with awesomey goodness . Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 It's taking me a while since I am having trouble with the orientation of the sweeper object. When I have a path thats not on a direct x,y, or z axis, I can't figure out the angle of the target object to make it align with the path. So many times I have to select the completed swept objects and turn them so they are parallel to the plates I am workin on. Can anyone give me a quick insight into sweepers magical orientation properties? Quote
Eric2575 Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Wheelhouse and upper deck are about finished. Now on to the rest of the hull. Quote
TheSpleen Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 everyone has already used up the best words to describe this. So I will just say Wow! Quote
nimblepix Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Hey, that's what I was going to say. Looks like it will hold up quite well during a giant squid attack. : ) Quote
Admin Rodney Posted July 26, 2009 Admin Posted July 26, 2009 Its great fun to go back and read over these kind of projects as they come together. Here's an article-like view of this topic. When I think about terms to use for Eric and Stian's modeling I think of the word 'mindnumbing'. Truly amazing stuff. Quote
Eric2575 Posted August 13, 2009 Author Posted August 13, 2009 Finally got the first length of hull section riveted. I took a while since I was using reference pics from the original Nautilus prop used in the making of the movie. Npw that I have sort of a work flow, I hope to get the rest of the sections done a bit faster. Quote
Tralfaz Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Geez Eric, I am at a loss for words. Hope you are able to get a water environment created that will do justice to this model. Al Quote
John Bigboote Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Amazingly mechanically beautiful. I hope the hull is all 1 mesh and airtight...? Quote
jakerupert Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 >Here's an article-like view of this topic. How do you create this kind of view? Quote
John Bigboote Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 This just in: The Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' to be remade by Robert Zemeckis and the Disney machine: http://www.animationmagazine.net/article/10489 Quote
dre4mer Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 Apparently while I was gone Eric started drinking the same beverage mix that Stian has regularly? My only question is... where can I get some? Great work on the detail here eric! Quote
Eric2575 Posted September 26, 2009 Author Posted September 26, 2009 Ethan, come on now, you've been on the sauce since before I found it. Just look at your Pixar quality characters. I've reached into the mechanical drawer, and you're in the organic. I believe we are both expressing our love for this work in a fine way Btw, funny you should resurface this thread, because I've been meaning to get back to finishing the hull rivet patterns and got sidetracked by the Millennium Falcon. Thanks for the compliment and keep up the good work Cheers Eric Quote
PurpleDingo Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Just.....wow. *wipes the drool away* Quote
Tralfaz Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 The Nautilus looks fantastic Eric. The rivet detail is just great! Al Quote
Darkwing Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 that's like exactly how i envisioned the sub when I read the book Quote
Eric2575 Posted February 22, 2010 Author Posted February 22, 2010 Thanks gang. The rivets are giving me fits. The upper structure rivets are all modeled and the rivets below the water line are decals. The decals are all hand drawn using references from the movie prop. There are over three thousand on the ship. Got a ways to go Quote
Darkwing Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 see, that's the point where I would deem the project not worthy, I haven't got patience in that area of nitpicky little things. I can wait around for some things, but not others, this is one of them! That is more proof of Eric's skill as he does have that patience Quote
williamgaylord Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Riveting! (Sorry, I've been working on taxes, so I'm not right in the head at this moment...) Looking gorgeous! I can see where placing all those rivets accurately could be maddening. I'm guessing you at least take advantage of symmetry across the center plane to save yourself work--at least for the decaling. So are you still toying with the idea of building a physical model? Or will this current project cure you of that? Amazing work! Quote
BrainLock Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Looks like it will be awesome! and reminds me of the old 20,000 Years Under the Sea Ride at Disney World, not to mention the movie. Quote
nino banano Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Great modeling Eric, very good details here, congrats Quote
