Hi fellow A:M'ers

I've just started up an new and ambitious project (maybe to ambitious? :P ). Anyway, the project is to model the beautiful WWII cruiser KM Bismarck. I hope that I manage to keep an certain amount of details, but as you probably guess, this model is going to get an huge amount of patches. as it is now I have approximately 171K of them.... I make many of the parts of the ship as individual models, and assemble it all in an actions.

Let me know what you think so far :)

Best regards

Stian

Ah yes. Some of the (inferior?) model images on the net I was looking at didn't have those. But I'd say the real thing did. Though I'm finding it hard to find clear images of the actual ship.

Stian,

You'll finish the Bismarck before I finish the Batmobile.

Excellent modeling so far, as usual, ad infinitum! 30K patches yikes!

When did you start modeling it?

Very nice work Stian!!

Thanks David

When did you start modeling it?

I started a week ago

Stian,

Beautiful detail already and I know you've got a lot more on the way.

I remain in awe of your talent (and patience!).

Color me impressed.

This model is so well done that I started googling "Bismarck", and ended up reading all about the Bismarck... Very interesting.

Stian strikes again :D

Exquisite workmanship as we've come to expect from you Stian. One question though: what made you decide on the Bismark?

Thanks Rodney, Martin and Dhar :)

Stian strikes again :D

One question though: what made you decide on the Bismark?

basically because its an great ship and its one I knew from before, and because there are much references of it

Thanks for your interest and comments :)

Here is the latest addition to the Bismarck. 37mm and 20mm flak machine gun.

I've also updated the first post in this thread

Wow! Amazing, Stian!

I don't know where you managed to find such detailed references to pick out so much detail. I couldn't find anything better than some fuzzy, distant shots.

Top quality modelling!!!

Thanks guys :)

Here is the last gun to be on the ship (atleast I think so... lol). Its an 20mm quadruple flak machinegun. Next to do is to build some more decks on the hull..

I am impressed. I have wanted to model a container ship and with what you have accomplised so far You have motivated me to pull out the plans for my ship. Keep up the excellent work!

Stian,

Better all the time!!

Your modeling skills are truly exceptional.

My guess is you could model anything you wanted too.

You are real encouragement to the community.

Thanks again for your comments, they are very encouraging while I'm working on this model :) I was away this weekend, so I have not been able to do much on it, but some I have.

I've been working on the bridge mainly, and I have added some rivets to the main cannons.

I do see some render artifacts on the topview render, not sure why though. The frontpage is updated.

Hi guys

Here is yet another update :) I've also added an shaded/wire render showing some of the ship. I know I can remove some splines here and there but thats not the priority at this stage. frontpage is updated

Best regards

Stian

Man, Stian...

You are wicked good at mechanical modeling.

86,000 patches! yoikes!

It's a thing of beauty, though.

Is this all one model? Or, are you assembling in chor?

The Bismarck certainly has more bells and whistles than the batmobile, and I'm struggling with that, can't imagine what patience it would take to model something this complex! Just---WOW!

Posted

That's insane Stian!

Are you still smoking those funny cigarettes? ;)

Beautiful work man, beautiful work. :D

Is the whole thing a single model, or are you assembling separate models in a choreography?

Posted

Thanks again friends for you comments

It is separate models assambeled in an action. my computer struggels when I reach 10-20K patches, and Bismarck now is at 86K

Beautiful model so far but I think it's counterproductive (from a realism standpoint) to use oversized rivet models on such large centers. Have you considered bump/displacement decals? You can install multiple, accurately scaled and spaced rows along with the lap joint between them with decals like the one attached.

Great model. Are u putting it into a short film or anything or are u making stills? One great touch is all the little bolts you can see sticking out it looks fantastic

Thanks guys :D

I think its mainly going to be used for stills

I think your right about the size, I'll check it out.

Here is the latest update, I'm finished with the bridge. Next up is the chimney and the area around it. the frontpage is updated

Stian,

This is going to sound like a broken record but........

You are doing absolutley wonderful work!

In looking at it, I had a thought (being only allowed 5 free thoughts a year, I thought I should jot it down).

Should/could your model be used for a very short promotional piece for you and A:M?

Here is my thinking:

I remember seeing a clip of the Bismark (http://www.meteorstudios.com/anglais.html) that was done in M^%$ showing it plowing through heavy seas.

Could you do a short clip showing something similar?

I can offer my render farm to help out, and have an interest in seeing H2O incorporated with A:M.

There was another thread that johnl3d had done some animated water.

I'm not saying you would need to do the stormy seas, perhaps just normal Atlantic seas.

I know there is a plug-in for AE that can create a grayscale displacement map, that could be overlayed on an ocean model.

Let me know what you think.

Great idea David :) And thanks for offering renderinghelp. But first I have an model to build, and I hope it turns out as I hope...

Anyway, its time for yet another update:) This time I have finished up modelling most of the chimney. Next up is some hangars and lifeboats. frontpage is updated.

Regards

Stian

'Insane' is the word that now comes to mind.

It just keeps on getting better Stian.

She's a thing of beauty.

Did you ever tell us what scale you are building this to? (If you did I can't find it)

Posted

Thanks:)

Im not sure I understand... do you mean wath scale on A:M rulers I'm using or level of detail?

Anyway, yet another update.. added two hangars and 8 lifeboats beside the chimney. frontpage is updated

Best regards
