Is the deck supposed to be that flat or will you be adding manholes, port holes, elevator pads and what have you?

Do you refer to the hull and the main deck? If thats the case, I have not done anything to it yet (its still a proxy). The modelling of the hull or the main deck is up next on my schedule

Stian,

Still just amazed.

Would love to see a wire of your float plane.

Quick question, the lines for the masts, are they 'render as lines' or are they actual geometry?

Good Stuff,

Rob

Thanks man. The lines are simple geometry. Here is the wires of the planes:

Not to overlook your latest but I just saw the previous one:

post-4643-1153512868.jpg

What a beautiful piece of machinery.

Wonderful economy of spline.

Nice render too.

Did I miss your render settings?

I'll look back through the posts.

Found them:

Global Color:

white

100%

100%

Sampling set to 40

Now to get a copy of your scheme file. ;)

Stian,

My hat is off. I cannot find even a hint of a spline, after comparing your wire frames to your AO renders! You are one "smooth" dude. B)

My hat is also off to the folks at HASH. You say you have AO set too the defaults. Beaitifull renders, even without materials or color.

BTW, checked out your demo reel. Very sweet! Loved the spinning AO and IBL renders.

Cheers,

Rob

Gorgeous Stian... i've been watching in awe from the sidelines. I love the detail. Your eye can just rove and rove. A co-worker of mine who has no interest in 3D spotted this from accross the room and said "WOW who's is that!"

I don't suppose you'd let us in on the current patch count and render time?

Your hard work is definately paying off!

Thank you guys  I don't know what to reply to your heartwarming and encouraging comments :) Thanks

Best ragards

Stian

*edit* I did upload an update in this post, but I removed it again. I spotted some errors in it, I'll upload it later to day after the rerender

The patch count is now at approximately 140K, and the renders takes from 10 to 30min with the AO set to 40 (res is 960x480)

What sort of detailed rotoscopes do you have anyway, it must be the shipbuilder's own blueprints?

Here is my main resources:

The line drawings that I use

Technical layout (great information)

And here is the todays update... not a very big one but... have made the handrail on the main deck (and some other stuff)

Best regards

Stian

Whoohoo! Bismarck lives! The rail really makes a difference. It's like there's people on it now.

PS Let us know when you post this on another forum. I want to see the replies!

Stian,

Early in this thread I made some comment about the size and spacing of your rivets. Having seen your reference images, you may totally ignore my opinion.

I'm thoroughly jealous of your resources. I wish everything I wanted to model was this well documented by an obvious fanatic whose willing to post them for free on the Net.

Looks like you'll easily beat this guy another Bismarck model who wants to keep his polygon count below 800K.

Speaking of the Bismarck images; the catapult for the reconassaince plane looks awfully short, even for a small prop plane. I wonder how many G's did the pilot pull?

Yet another update

Have done some of the details on the main deck (but more to come). It's hard to see the details in these low res renders, so I'm going to post a high res tomorrow

Best regards

Stian

Ha all.

I've finally started on the texturing. I'm still in a very early stage on the texturing part, but I have managed to do a few test already. Let me know what you think :)

Stian!

It's AWESOME!

There's no more to say.

I do have a question.

Would all the portholes always be open when not in combat?

My only comment is this, and really, it's premature. It still looks like a model to me... (and that's why I say the comment is premature, I know you're not done texturing yet.)

I have one more question. Why hasn't your sig line changed? You do fantastic work, you do it quickly. I honestly don't understand. You should have a job by now if not the career.

Thank you for sharing your progress on this formidable ship and project with us... It could certainly be an illustration in a school text, or naval history book.

Wow !

This is a fantastic modeling work Stian !

Congratulation ! there is so much detail!

Is your computer and AM still run fine with this beast in head ?

superb... I just want to fly through and zoom...

I totally agree with that. Havent spent to much time on the rendering settings, just made a setup to show of the boat (progress renders). hopefully I'll be able to make a nice render at the end, with ocean (eventhough environments is something I'm really weak on).

Here is a quick texturing of the arado plane:

Thanks

Here is an new update. I've placed all the materials to their designated groups. What I have to do now is to tweak the materials, add some dirtmaps and hopefully manage to create an environment for the boat

Best regards

I've done a few environment test. This is colorful renders. perhaps it is Bismarcks last dawn? planing on doing some dark renders later. Hope you like these ones.

All the superlatives fail...

It just keeps getting better.

For some reason I like that last image... the one with the Bismark front.

It looks a lot like a photograph to me. Not the grain or paper (or whatever) the setup and general look).

My new superlative... "Stian!"

As in "Damn... that's Stian!"

That's awesome! I do have one problem with the renders though: there are no dark hard shadows anywhere on that ship, which make this images look very unrealistic. It looks like you used an IBL exr map, which is good for simple normalized colors, but very bright values in the exr image will create major visible irregularities and take a render downhill.

That's one amazing ship, Agep. Wish I could test her out :P

Stian,

Will you be putting the lines (ropes) in coils or stored in other ways somewhere?

I'm just assuming the Germans pulled their ships into dock the same way we do.

I was a boatswain mate, so lines were a big part of my life in the Navy.

Just for fun, here are the Blues Brothers singing "Sink the Bismarck."

Stian,

Excellent renderings.

The ship does look too perfect but I am sure you will address that.

What was the render time for each of those views?

Can you do a view with one of the guns raised and off to the side (long perspective view)? I'd like to try something.
