It may be a minor annoyance but it's also puzzling. All other windows dock and undock as expected but for some unknown reason the Properties window has become stubbornly untethered. Shutting down and re-starting A:M has no effect. Any suggestions?

The A:M installer includes a basic set of models and assets but there's another larger set users are supposed to download. What is the location for that?

Robert and I were discussing the EXR format and I wanted to share the project file based on Jim Talbot's Leopard Queen image. The project was demo'd at SIGGRAPH 2005 by Greg Rostami. I must assume it is called Boris becuse of the artist Boris Vallejo whose style is captured in the image. Still haven't found the video of the demo yet but perhaps it isn't far away... maybe even on one of the Hash Inc SIGGRAPH cds. Update: I may have found the composite video. It is in .swf format so am attempting to convert to MP4. The CompDemoProject file attached only includes the EXR file. Will also upload the the Project file (which should also be…

Short version: Use Windows 8 compatibility settings. Longer version: Sometime after I upgraded to a Windows 10 computer a few years ago I noticed that A:M would often freeze during on-screen preview renders. Other A:M users have mentioned this to me also. I could start an on-screen render, either a regular or progressive render, and if it took more than 5 seconds to complete the time counter in the corner would freeze, the progress bar would stop moving and A:M might even gray out and become "not responding" . If I waited as long as the render would have taken to finish, A:M might return, maybe with a finished render, maybe not, but ESC-aping out of the long ren…

Anonymous asks... You can set exact angle in the bone's properties. Combinations of X Y and Z can be confusing. It is best to work from bones that start from straight vertical or horizontal orientations.

A forum member has posed this problem... LightSource.prj That is the correct behavior. Only ray-traced lights can accurately account for the shadowing created by boolean cutters. So, with the box as a boolean cutter, the sphere is completely "cut" and casts no shadow from the ray-traced light. The z-buffered light can not handle that complex situation, so even though the box cuts the sphere from the camera's view, the z-buffered light still sees it and a shadow is cast. Interesting way to get a shadow-only pass! I shall remember that!

I want to add some information related to Netrenders Event Commands that allow us to run batch files and programs after a job completion (or frame completion). This process can allow use of other programs to post process output from Animation:Master's Netrender and help us understand how we can do the same basic process without Netrender as well. There are three basic components of this process: 1. Set up the Event Command in Netrender 2. (Optionally) structure a (textual) batch file to take arguments from Netrender and pass them on to other programs 3. Run the desired programs and processes This does assume a basic understanding of r…

I was lathing a shape and thought I could easily turn it into a giraffe's head... A few hours later this dragon thingy appeared: The motion blur... a bit thick no? I thought I'd be lazy and make the eyelids be patch images that turn on/off. That was probably more work than it should have been if I would have just made actual eyelids. It kinda worked though. Had fun with a few things that won't be particularly apparent such as having the color of the horns change so that the lightest/grayest horn is always in the back (presumably aiding in giving a sense of depth). This guy technically has no mouth although he does have a jaw bone. He real…

The MuhHair and Kajiya-Kay plugin shaders work to make Particle Hair look better by re-shaping the Diffuse and Specular response of their surfaces. Kajiya-Kay is the easier one since it has no parameters of its own, it's just ON or not. However, unlike MuhHair, that lets you fine-tune the placement of highlights on the hair, Kajiya-Kay requires you to carefully place your specular light source... as you would in real life lighting. Here is hair with no extra shader and Specular Intensity 0 in the surface properties. Same hair, but with Specular Intensity greater than 0. The renderer seems to regard the hair as one simple mass and paints the spe…

Hi, First I'm on AM V14c which probably won't matter in this case as this will probably be a memory exercise anyway. I've rigged characters in AM 14c using TSM2 before just fine but this time I got an error when I did the rigger. I did the builder, the flipper but when I did the rigger it said "No System Found"??!!?? Anyone?? Thanks so much, Rusty Edit: BTW, I can't find a manual so I'm doing this all from memory which might be the problem.

I'm just noticing that Quicktime render output isn't in the V16 options. And the AVI output gives an error message when I try to render out to AVI. I normally render out tga's or png's so I haven't paid this any attention until now. William

Today via Skype I got to visit with forum member Roger. We were trying to ascertain why he was having so much trouble accurately placing new key frames in relation key frames he's already made. What we discovered was that A:M was not updating the view window to match what the time counter was indicating. It looked normal if you just hit play, but if you scrubbed the time control forward or back it would stop with the last frame you scrubbed through and not draw the current one. For example if you were trying to get to the frame where a bouncing ball has just touched the ground you would have to scrub to the frame after that before you would see the ball actual…

Imagination Technologies has come out with a couple of real-time raytrace graphics cards including the Caustic R2500. They are a bit expensive at the moment, but I expect they will come down over time. Is there any interest at Hash in adding support for these in the future? It would provide a great capability for previewing animations. You can read about them here: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/01/she...y-tracing-card/ -Vance

Someone, maybe John Bigboote? recently posted an animation he had done with a waving flag, and as I recall, posted the .prj that could be reused with a new flag decal. Does that ring a bell? I poked around but couldn't find it.

I don't know if I'm the only one to experience this but, I got a new Macbook Pro. After following the instructions to get the information off the computer so I could get a new .lic file for my new computer I sent it to support. When I got the subsequent file back (BTW: hope things went well at Comic Con) I downloaded it through G-Mail and dropped it into my AM folder. Having done this before I new it should have worked. So here is what I found out - Safari apparently analyzed the file and added a .txt extension to the file. Once I removed that and made it a .lic again everything worked.

I noticed in 17c the same project rendered AO considerable slower. In 17a rendered 8:53 i think and 17c 37 minutes. Has anyone played with AO in 17c? Steve reset it again and it has not finished yet and it is now 1:30 hours per frame.

I was taking a project back and forth between v16 and v17 and noticed that I couldn't see sprites in an on-screen progressive in v16 but I can see them in v17. They show up in shaded mode in both but v16 didn't show them in progressive render. Did that really not work in v16?

From what I read, Hash Inc will be next to the web comics area at Booth 1322. (It's a bit hard to make out the booth numbers on the interactive map so see the attached image)

Hey all, Dunno if this ever got an answer, but is there some limit on the number of light sources in a given chor? Just added a model to a chor that already had a different one (admittedly, both are lightsource heavy) and lost all environmental lighting. removing the 2nd model from the chor re-established them. Any pointers on how to avoid this would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich

Hey. Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the rotation handle on the model doesn't match the axis in the graph editor? I've seen this happen on several occasions in V17 this year. But I thought I'd at least mention it here. I ran into another case today. If you look at this screen capture, you'll notice that I'm moving the X(red) axis rotation of the bone, but in the graph editor it is registering as the Z(blue) axis. That seems very odd and can get confusing when animating. Has anyone else had this happen? Cheers, William

FYI, I re-upped my A:M subscription today. When I pushed the button to continue on to PayPal, I got an error message that I had requested an old version of the PayPal Page and that it was because of "bookmarks" Backing up to the Hash Store page and redoing that button made it go through OK.

A new release (v18.0b) was posted so go get it! Latest Information Before you install a new release there are some things to consider: - Are you in the middle of a production? - Are you under a deadline? - Are your settings perfect and you don't wish to see them change? Consider these and other factors carefully before installing new software and when in doubt... login to the A:M Forum and ask questions. That's why we are here. Rather than post to the squeekly clean notification of the v18.0b release I thought I'd start a topic here to capture thoughts on the current release. But first, thanks for this latest update. I…

Is it me (v18f OSX) or has the Terrain Generator Wizard stopped working (in that it actually doesn't render anything) and the output does not match the settings (ie I set it to a 1000 x 1000 mesh and got a 1 x 1 mesh) Wow - just dragging the mouse off the Step width box actually opens up a finder window (find/open file)..... I think something is seriously porkerd here (may not just be the Terrain Generator) Cheers

Even after years of using A:M I find myself continually impressed by the breadth of features that are at our disposal. I was recently looking for a simple video/editor/viewer to do some basic reorganization of rendered frames (also from A:M) and thought to use A:M's own Choreography based linear editor. Needless to say it outperformed my expectations. I even discovered a few new things too. For instance, I didn't realize or had most certainly forgotten that saving out an Action of what I had edited together in the video actually could be reutilized (or just saved so that I could return to that earlier editing point). Did I run into any snags? Not really, although…

I notice that when I choose EXR file to save a frame, there is no "shadow buffer" to select. Didn't EXR have this option in the past? It's been a while since I rendered this format, so I may be missing a step somewhere.

Wow... I missed this until this morning. I have never noticed this feature and would like to get a bit more info on it if possible. I never noticed this "Wizard" before. Does this somehow render individual aspects of a scene? Will it render out just the shows in a scene for instance so that they can be layered into an editor such as After Effects. Anyone know how this works/ what it does exactly? Thanks. Kevin

Hi there, working quite a while with A:M, I noticed that there is quite some areas where undo will not work at all. First and foremost if you make changes to the bias handles of a CP, Undo will not take those changes made back. Also when you work on a model with a Decal applied. If you delet something, take the changes back with undo, the undo will not restore the deleted and restored CP in the stamps. Cheers Heiner
