User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Hi - I created a small round hair ball creature with eyes for a scene that I brushed and lengthened some of the hairs, and when rendered from the model view it is fine, but when I drop the character in the chor - all the hairs are not brushed or modified - what did I do wrong? Thank you.

Hello All. Can anyone tell me why my Flower Power petals will not generate shadows? It looks like petal1 might be, but none of the other 12 petals do. The Stem and Leaves cast shadows when rendered. Thanks. Mr. Bill

Hi hopefully this makes sense without posting pictures. if it doens't, i'll post some. but here's the latest problem of mine: I have a hair material I made, applied it to the eyebrows and ponytail of my character. I imported my character's decals, changed the image to diffuse color etc. the eyebrows worked perfectly, the hair picked up the color. but for some reason, the ponytail part stays pure white. any ideas? thanks in advance!

here's a screenshot of my problem-- I apply a hair length map, but where I want there to be NO hair, there's still little tiny hair bumps-- is there a way to get it down to 0% in those areas? In my hair length map, those areas are pure black. Thanks!

I installed Steffen Gross's autosave plugin and I notice it's making date based directories but they are all empty - the plugin instructions page says I have to turn it on in plugins properties, but for the life of me I can't find where the plugins properties tab or window is supposed to be. Thanks in advance. (Version 13t on windows if that makes a difference)

Hi - for some reason my rotoscope, screen lines and rulers have disappeared from every angle. Rulers are checked "on" and the rotoscope is also "on" and I have shut down the program and restarted w/ the same problem - this happens now and then - has anyone else run into this and know how to fix it? Unless I am just doing something real stupid, which I don't think is the issue this time.

Hi. I've been reading that A:M imports .obj files but with some problems in the earlier releases. I have v13. The issue is that I need a real good kick-ass dinosaur for a project -- and I suck at modeling anything 'real'. I found this one on Turbo Squid: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/369646 ...But it costs a lot of money. I'll make the investment if I had some kind of comfort that the .obj file will import correctly and that I could add Walk Cycles, animate it, etc. (since I can't return it). Anyone have experience in importing .obj files in v13? Anything I should be warned about? Thanks! DirectorDave

A few months ago I read about a new title for A:M, I would swear that I once held it in my hands at the local book emporium. However, I can't find it by searching and it's not on the Hash site. Does anyone have any idea which book I am talking about?

Hi Everyone, I need to add a New Model (mdl) and a New Sound (wav) into the library on my hard drive. I tied to copy and paste the files into the appropriate directories, but they Do Not show up as a thumbnail. Each time I open the progam, I can never see them in the libraries window even though they are physically in that directory. Has anyone else run into this before? Thanks, Bob

Hi - can anyone suggest how to set up a solid white background in a choreography? I tried doing a white floor and setting the camera background as white, but the floor had a lot of brown to it. I also created a ramp model w/ a slight curvature in the back (like a skateboard ramp), but I don't think I have the lighting right - I have been experimenting around w/ putting lights here and there, but can't seem to get it to look really good. Any suggestions would be great - thank you.

Hey guys, So, I've been trying to figure out how to stop hair from passing through my characters face. I've read a post that said, turn on object collisions in dynamics. I did this, but it only keeps the hair from passing through the scalp. I changed the collision radius, but the higher number I go, the hair becomes a crazy mess. It looks like my character is under water. Thanks. Justin

I am following the guide by David Rogers, and when I make my patches the outer edges of splines turn into hexagon shapes. Like when making a sphere, it is round but with the hexagon look to it. I hope someone understands what i am saying, meaning i hope i am explaining it clearly and in the right way. thanks for any help. Steve

Hi all The latest sticking point I've been having with a small project I've been working on. I just finished creating one of the first 3d set pieces I've been experimenting with In this case a stairway. (Yes I know It has a way to go but bear with me) Anyway what I want to do is animate a tracking shot going up the stairs. The problem I'm having Is I mostly have figured out how to manipulate the camera and I think some of my attempts are working. But so far I haven't even figured out how to look through camera 1 so even If I'm doing everything else right for the render I'm flying blind. All suggestions are welcome and with any luck this isn't too stupid a que…

Hi Everyone, In TWO, I have noticed that each of the animators needed to properly locate their character in the scene before animating so that the character did not jump in location from animator to animator. Does anyone know how they did that? Thanks, Bob

Hi Everyone, I am working on a project and I need to adjust the lighting from the default in the choreography window. I have the reference manual, but I can't seem to find examples of what each type of light does, and how to use it. Do you know if there is a Tutorial available, or maybe a secondary website from one of the members? Thanks, Bob

Hi folks, I am having some difficulty in using an .mov-file as rotoscope or layer. I can see it working as a sequence in the imagefolder but cant set the range in the chor somehow. Whenever I write some bigger values in there it jumps back to a one frame range. What can I be possibly missing here? Thanks for your help.

I've read several posta about this topic and was wondering if it has ever been done. I know there's physics and such for simple objects but nothing to that of a ragdoll so far as from what I read. this was post from back in 2005. I currently have version 11.1H and was wondering if that or something later than that has it and if so how I could unleash it. Maybe if someone has an example project it may help me out. Thank you guys.

Ok, I'm getting there on this project.... What is better, to make one long path for the character to move on, or different paths to move on? I have a character carrying in books, setting them down and leaving, and returning with another book. Should I create one path for the character to follow or make new paths each time they enter? When I try to add another constraint the program does not like it very much! Anyone used more then one path?

The bone I'm trying to aim is is right there, but I can't get this other bone to select it with the eyedropper. I try to select the target from the list and the bone does not appear on the list. I can see the bone on screen, but clicking on it gets me "None." The bone I am trying to aim at is a child of the bone that I am aiming with. Don't know if that matters*. * It must matter. I just made it a sibling bone and, bam, it worked! Thanks for your help, um...me! I solved it myself within minutes of asking, lol. Is that one of the laws of rigging? that you can't aim at child bones?

Hi - I'm working on a gorilla model and posted in the work in progress forum and David Simmons mentions a few things including the hair- "I'm not sure about the hair or the chest scars in these renders. In these renders, it looks like the hair could be thickened at its' base and the scar could use a bump or displacement map" How do you thicken the hair at the base? I am looking in the Technical Reference - and it mentions "the thickness can vary along it's length" - I am in AM in the "properties" of the hair system - and it just has a "Thickness" with a percentage, but nothing about the thickness over the length (thicker at the base) Any help to clear this…

Hi I am trying to make a star 'twinkle'. I am using a Kleig and have the intensity varying so that it goes from zero brightness to maximum brightness and back to zero over the sequence. I thought I would add lens flare beams to make it look a little more 'starry' using "Sun 1" type, but I can't see any beams after render. Lens flare is turned on. Any ideas where I may be going wrong? Thanks Hoggy

Long time user(since Playmation) just returned to A.M., upgraded, yada, yada. I cant seem to find my beloved Isometric rendering function... Has this option for rendering been removed? If it has, what was the last version it was in? If its still in there, where is it hiding? Sorry to ask such a nobbish question but the option isnt where I remember it being. Ty in advance for any help/hints, I have a client who wants flat shaded Iso type graphics and AM was my first choice.

another hair problem: i want to drive the color and the length of my hair system by 2 different decals, or one decal with 2 different images in it, seems to be no difference. driving the color is no problem, works fine. but when i add the second image for the length, it affects the color of the hair too!!!?? i´ve done it all like in talbots hair-tutorial-video, but it won´t work... first i thought it might be a windows-version problem (sometimes i´ve some problems with images there, won´t be displayed etc...), so i tried it in the osx-version too, but same thing. all i do is select "other" in the decal-images "type"-menue, then add a property and select l…

I am following a tutorial on modeling Coopers face. I brought in some rotoscopes for the front and left view. The problem is that when I make the rotoscope unpickable the red cross is on the little gloved hand but the rotoscope is still movable. Makes for frustrating modeling experience. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall or can this be fixed in a faster way?

One of the things I always enjoyed looking at, to inspire me with AM, was the old PDF file that looked like a software box, that showed AM's possibilities and feature set. Although its VERY out of date, I miss it. Is there somewhere I can re-download that? I can't seem to find it, one the revamped site. Thanks! John

i just upgraded to v15, and now i have 2 problems: i was rigging a character, done that a 100 times before... when i switch on my ik-arms setup in the action the right arm of my character stands curiously out to the right (bild14), when i turn it off and on another time the arm is in the right position, but the elbow-bones are now placed at the shoulders (bild15 & 16)!!!??? something like that never happened before... has anyone an idea whats up there? my second problem is that when i use the skin-shader it affects the white of the eyes of the character, they go hyper-white, no shadows on it at all!

Hi Is it possible to either move the start of my action in the chor to say frame 30, or to start the choreography at frame minus 30. I can stretch all the keys to the right or left (up to frame 0) apart from the first one that seems glued to frame 0. I know should have thought about it in more detail before I started, but I was sure I could tweak it afterwards. I am using v15. Thanks. Hoggy

I just purchased the latest and greatest version of AM 2008 AKA V15.... Running on Vista (AMD + 3 gigs of ram with a Nvidia 8800 GPU card) I have used AM before.... but have been away from the tool for more than 2 years now..... I have a strange problem..... When ever I try and highlight a region in the choreography window or a model window the area hightlighted is obscured with a Gray or black box?? I don't know why this is happening?? Is this something to do with my video card or setting? (Nvidia 8800) The grey/black region goes away if I minimize then maximize the application window.... HELP Paul
