DeeJay Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Hi folks! I just forgot to post some WIPs from my current project, Boris & Jimbo (use this link for more infos about the project, story etc.). Ok, here you are - let me introduce to you Boris, the rat and Jimbo, the snake! Quote
Eric2575 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Very nice and very appealing characters. What is the project? These guys could go a long way in my humble opinion. The rat, er, sorry, Boris, reminds me of the "Ice Age" characters. How'd you come up with those guys? Btw, I'm just learning about lighting, would you share your lighting setup? I like the way the characters are displayed. Did you use a skylight? Anyways, enough of my babble. Great job, can't wait to see them in action. Quote
Gene Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Great Characters! I like the way you've over-exaggerated the features. Looking forward to some Animations... Eugene Quote
Admin Rodney Posted March 7, 2006 Admin Posted March 7, 2006 Very nice! As has been said these are great characters. They look like they'll be fun to animate. I like the stark lighting style and the stark character color too. Is that the lighting style that you'll be using in animation? I like. Is that hair you are using for the whiskers are is that modeled geometry? Quote
oakchas Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Cute characters! They'll make a neat buddy flick! Quote
DeeJay Posted March 7, 2006 Author Posted March 7, 2006 Hi! Thanks for your comments! ;-) @Eric: The lightsetup is a lightrig (a little blueish), one Specular-Spot-Light and a fill light from the bottom. To get the white background I used fog. @Rodney: At the moment I'm experimenting with different background styles, maybe I end with this one (yup, the first idea is often the best one) No hair on this, just geometry (with dynamic-options). Cheers, David Quote
Admin Rodney Posted March 7, 2006 Admin Posted March 7, 2006 No hair on this, just geometry (with dynamic-options). Definitely fooled my eye. Ahem... post more images please. Quote
cosmonaut Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Those are really cool looking characters! Very nice stylization. That rat looks M-E-A-N...more please Quote
itsjustme Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Very cool! I'm looking forward to the animation. Quote
rossk Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 I can't really add anything new... just add to the pile of compliments-- Very very good expressive characters! Quote
Dhar Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Lovable characters. Their looks alone tell stories. Nice work. Quote
DeeJay Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 There's only one more pic at the moment, but I guess you've seen it already. Cheers, David Quote
trajcedrv Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 What can I say? I have not seen characters with this much personality in a loong time! I can't wait to see them move! btw... I too like your light setup very much! Could you (please) post choreography with your light and fog setup? Drvarceto KEEP US POSTED! Quote
DeeJay Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 Here you go, the lighting setup. But please don't expect to much magic. The final touch & trick is the use of an ambient-ramp-material on every model. Cheers, DJ lighting.zip Quote
trajcedrv Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Thanks The final touch & trick is the use of an ambient-ramp-material on every model. I did that Quote
DeeJay Posted April 27, 2006 Author Posted April 27, 2006 Damn, I always forget you guys here in this forum. Shame on me ... Animation-WIP: First Scene (wip) Quote
Paul Forwood Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Ha ha! Thats great! He has a very nice movement to him. Quote
Leo73 Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Great character designs. I especially like the snake. I like your lighting setup as well. Good luck with the project. Quote
3DArtZ Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 all this stuff looks so cool!!! Keep us posted please!!! Mike Fitz www.3dartz.com Quote
Dhar Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 That was great DJ Any chance of posting a story board? Quote
DeeJay Posted April 27, 2006 Author Posted April 27, 2006 LOL. That sure made me laugh Great stuff @agep: ^^ Right at the moment you wrote your comment I was checking for opportunities in norway. That must be a sign ... @all: I'm happy that you like it. Stay tuned! Quote
UNGLAUBLICHUSA Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 These characters are VERY cute. I have not had much success doing cute, most of my character designs have a very HARD look to them. My wife wishes I was doing cute stuff instead of what I currently do also. very nice style on these two characters, my compliments!! keep up the fine work. Quote
Sharky Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Hi DeeJay! These charachters are very funny and perfect! The rat's animations are very realistic and nice smooth movement. Cool stuff!!! Keep it up! Cheers, Sharky Quote
DeeJay Posted April 30, 2006 Author Posted April 30, 2006 Oki-doki, finaly I've replaced the fly's path-animation with handmade movement and have made some minor changes (more anticipation, timing-changes). http://www.davbach.de/movies/scene_01_boris_walk_04.mov Cheers, DJ Quote
Dhar Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Hmmmm.... I like the first take better. The hand stopping before twirling is distracting. Maybe it stopped too long? Quote
3DArtZ Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 yeah, I like the first one better too. I think he looks hateful angry in the second clip and it doesn't particularly make sense.... But still nice work! Mike Fitz www.3dartz.com Quote
DarkLimit Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Wow this is WAY cool I love ur characters so well done....... Quote
dborruso Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 These are great characters. It inspires me to work on making more creative character design. Quote
DeeJay Posted May 3, 2006 Author Posted May 3, 2006 whats the story line behind them? No "real" story, more some sort of Tom & Jerry. You can read more about the characters on my WIP-site: http://www.davbach.de/wip/ Quote
Dhar Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Wow! I just read the biographies of Boris & Jimbo. Dude! You got yourself a winner. This is major media material. <sigh> How I wish I was on your team. Hey, I'll be in Germany in August, what part of Germany do you live? Maybe I can give you a visit and pick your brain Quote
NancyGormezano Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 have to agree with everyone - these are great, appealing characters - will make a terrific "buddy" story Quote
DeeJay Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 Wow! I just read the biographies of Boris & Jimbo. Dude! You got yourself a winner. This is major media material. <sigh> How I wish I was on your team. Hey, I'll be in Germany in August, what part of Germany do you live? Maybe I can give you a visit and pick your brain The "team" consists of me, myself & I. I live in Düsseldorf. Cheers, DJ Quote
Admin Rodney Posted May 4, 2006 Admin Posted May 4, 2006 I want to complement you on your website. It very nicely promotes your work and takes us into the world of Boris & Jimbo. Its a very professional piece of work and it feels like we are part of the creation process. Your implementation of Boris's nose is noteworthy. It's not often you see such successful animation with such an appendage. (Sorry Boris but like your creator I have to tell the truth). With a nose of that length its often hard to make the facial animation work. As you've designed things you even have a great source for secondary animation. Superb. Outstanding job DJ! Quote
Dhar Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 The "team" consists of me, myself & I. I live in Düsseldorf. Cheers, DJ I'll be in Aschaffenburg the first week of August. How far is that ? Quote
DeeJay Posted May 7, 2006 Author Posted May 7, 2006 Rodney, you make me blush ... I'm glad you like it! @Dhar: Well, actually Aschaffenburg is not around the corner (ok, in US-measure-terms it is close by ;-) ). Plus the problem that I really don't know if I'm available at this time. :-( Quote
DeeJay Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 Hi folks! Sorry for the sloooow progress of this project, but here you go with another little WIP-Screenie: You see, I'm still on the run! Cheers, DJ Quote
KenH Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Wow. How did I miss this thread? Very nice characters. I like the second animation....the fly seems almost drunk. The only thing I don't like is the hand going up on frames 294-297. I preferred the fist take on that bit. In fact the whole hand move before it was better in the first.....more nonchalant. Keep it up and us posted! Quote
DeeJay Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 Alright, as so many people got problems with this hand-moving, I'll change it. Thanks! Quote
KenH Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 BTW I just tried that ArtRage program you mention on your site. It's pretty incredible...very original/intuative interface. Quote
Dhar Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Hey Deej. I'll be in Germany on Aug. 1 and leave Aug. 17. I'd like if we can meet over a cup of coffee or something? Quote
DeeJay Posted August 7, 2006 Author Posted August 7, 2006 So, the next test is ready to go. At the moment I'm building the setting for my short. There's still a loooong way to go, the szene is still missing background props (small hills, trees & stuff) an tweaking of the front things. Also the lighting is not final! So there's plenty to do right now. The main intention for this shot was to test the look of grass. It's some sort of "mass" right now and I'll give it more contrast in the future. Anyhow, here you go: Quote
KenH Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Looks great. Maybe vary the length abit more? Will their feet interact with the grass? Quote
