A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.

-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).

-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Working on my first humaniform model and I've got four-point areas with shadowed corners in one particular area (shoulder). Just can't seem to figure out why it's happening... Hello all, I'm fairly new to AM and am trying to work through the examples from Animation Master A Complete Guide (2006 edition). In chapter six starting around page 250/251 it starts taking about character rigging and goes through an example referencing the Captain character. Looking on the CD I have found several model files which could be of the captain, but none of them seem to load, I get an error that reads: [/i]Invalid Model File D:/pathToModel/Captain_v19.mdl So I am obviously having trouble with the example since I can't put bones in a model I can't load. Hs anyone else had this problem? Was using AM v 12.0n+ on Windows XP. Tia, -- kammer

If I'm working on an A:M project, and I need to leave the computer for, let's say, an hour or more; when I come back, whatever is on my desktop [wallpaper, icons, etc.] will be in the Modeling Window or the Choreography. If I try to go to a different section [e.g., leave Choreography and go to a Model Window] there is only a blank grey screen. I still have toolbars, but the only way to get back to any of the workspaces is to do a Save and close out...then re-launch A:M. Does this ever happen to anyone else?

I think I've seen people introduce themselves on the board before they go and impose upon the senior users with silly newbie questions... Hi, I'm Matt G5 1.5 single & G4 667 powerbook Animation Master 12 - just picked it up at WizardWorld Chicago this past summer I've been full on Adobe 2d/static up until this point and this is my first foray into 3d/animation and now my newbie questions...I appologize if I'm not getting the terminology right, or being unclear in my questions. I made a model...but it's not really a model, it's a .prj file. It's a building...the Lincoln Memorial to be exact (sans Lincoln himself for the time being), so there aren'…

Help! Just got A:M at Wondercon today and will be running it primarily on a laptop that does not have an internal CD drive, so prefer to not carry it around just for this program. Is there a legit/legal way to bypass the requirement for the CD? I travel a lot and really need to keep things light and small on trips. Maybe putting a copy of the files onto a 1GB USB drive??? I have no problem signing some form or other agreement to state I will not copy or pirate the software, I just need to be able to run it on my laptop "sans" CD. Thanks! The Shooter

Can some one tell me (or point me in the right direction) how to use proxy models in your animations? I believe a proxy model is a low patch/poly version of your more detailed model. I am not sure how you replace the detailed version with the low detailed version and vice versa. Are there any tutorials or documentation on this? I tried searching the forum, but did not really find anything. Thanks in advance... Al

Hi there, So I've started A:M for the very first time.... not true but may as well be. In the first tutorial, the Kit e Kat is asked to be brought in. That's easy, but it floats in mid-air and I can't see where there may be a "drop to floor" type of command or function or something. Does one exist? Signed Newbie of the year. lol Cheers Clinton

i have to exports models made in animation master to wavefront obj. i think i stumbled over an export to wavefront anywhere in animation master, but i dont remember where and i have searched long now, i cant find it. where is ist , and if i am wrong, how can i achieve to export directly to .obj files? is there some good a:m plugin link list out there? there are plenty, but for example the reason for me coming back to animation master after 6 years was the torque exporter, which i didn't find in any of the plugin link lists out there, just stumbled over it accidently thanks in advance

Hello All, I'm running A:M v13.01 on a new MacBook with Intel processor. A:M seems to work fine, as it should. I'm experimenting with HDRI lighting, and was trying to follow the instructions to load an .hdr file into A:M from the HDRI Tutorial thread. It was suggested that the binary .hdr file (I got the "uffizi gallery" HDR file from the Debevec site at http://www.debevec.org/Probes/) should be imported. When I right click on the images directory in the Workspace and attempt Import>Image..., and then select the "uffizi_probe.hdr" file, it says "Unsuppported HDR Format." Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong? Alternately, can I change the HDR…

I'm a retiree looking to expand my creative juices. For years I have dabbled in photography/videography, video editing, and simple graphic work. The A:M application really caught my eye, and I will probably purchase it. I've gone thru most all of the information on Hash's home page, including the tutorials. It looks like I should be able to get a handle on the operational techniques. How far I'll be able to go with it depends on my commitment and interest. (and lasting brain cells!) But my question is, how well will my little puter handle the application and it's rendering chores? I'm running an iMac with PowerPC G4, 800 MHz; 768 MB SDRAM; 60 Gig; OSX 10.4.8. …

I was reading Dec 3d World, and there's an article in there about making the Caltex advert, that had a car made out of flies. So, seeing as I'm studying particles, I thought I'd have a go: [attachmentid=22919] It raised a number of questions - like did I do it the easiest way? I emitted fly sprites from the undecalled transparent Porsche, and applied a lot of force to make it go backwards, and then reversed the rendered TGAs. So you can't send particles along a path? I wanted the swarm to form a ball and then swarm along a path to form the car, but I could not get them to join up with the backwards rendered TGAs convincingly. If you send out partic…

Hi everyone, I've modeled a city. Floating over this city there is an objet which casts a shadow over the city. The shape of this shadow is changed by the geometry of the city, of course. I'd like to render the city in a pass and then hide the city and render only the floating object and its shadow but if I simply turn inactive the city, the shape of the shadow changes because it doesn't reach any surface but the ground and I'd like to preserve this shape in order to composite both render in postproduction... How can I do this? I've tried to include the city in the object's render but making the city to be flat white the same as the background in order to r…

Just finished my second session with AM and initial impression is it's gonna work, but there will be issues. Seems like I'm doing too much tech and not enough art. Things like moving the data library from the CD to the hard drive, as there were no models in the Models tab, and when I attempted to save I get this goofy message all about embedding and something about the project tree which I think I found but it had about a thousand items in it about which I hadn't a clue. I spent a few hours doing strange and wonderful things to the rabbit, and managed to save the project, but on reopening the program it flashed me a message about saving changes to the rabbit, I clicked y…

Hi All - I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem. In my camera properties, I set the background color (in this case to white). When I click the onscreen render button, the background is white. When I render my final animation, the background is black. I tried changing the bg color to all kinds of crazy colors. Same exact results. I'm sure I'm just missing a setting somewhere. I'm working on this very abstracted female model. I'm beveling all the edges. The problem I'm having is that, due to the beveling, I've got some spline "rings" that are very close to each other, and they're creating subtle bands in the surface of the model. In the attached image, you see an example right where the left leg joins the torso. Is there anything I can do to avoid this? I am aiming to animate with this character. I guess I could get rid of it if I peaked everything, but then I don't think I'd be able to smoothly curve things when animating (right?).

Hi! I'd like to create an idyllic scene of a country field with a field of tall grass that has contains some grass elements that "undulate" in the wind. This doesn't have to be completely realistic, and it seems that I'd only want to render a few "individual" blades of grass for the foreground. Does anyone have an idea on what kind of technique I could use to create this tall grass? Would this be a "Hair"-type technique? a "Flocking"-technique? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Hi! I'm looking to create a field of grass with the "Flocking" technique in A:M. I have created a very simple "blade of grass" with two bones that will allow it to sway. I've followed the instructions on how to create a flock (using the "crowd" plug-in). My "population" setting is at "20," which is the default, but when I drop my blade of grass on the flcoking manipulator I create, only two (2) blades of grass show up. I'd like to populate my scene with more than 20 blades, so how can I populate the flock? It doesn't seem to make sense that the program isn't filling the scene with the default 20, and only populating with two. Any help would be much app…
