A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I'm planning on trasnferring from M@y@ 8.5 to A:M and I had a few questions about what to expect: 1) Can I bring in .OBJ's of some of my models in A:M? 2) I'm looking into A:M because I'm more into NURBS than POLY's. A:M is different from both, but I understand it's more like NURBS. Can someone elaborate on this? 3) Can I import vector lines in .ai format and use them as the base for patch modeling? 4) How much file size does A:M take up? Because I'm starting out with the 1 year subscription, I have to use a cpu with internet, which only allows for my laptop. And I'm hoping it's slimmer and less demanding on the cpu resources so that it doesn't fre…

I've tried everything and I just can't figure it out. Is there anyway to turn IK off for that rig without messing up all the other key frames? I tried adding a second chor action. This worked but then I can't key the bones. Is there a way to key all the bones at the point the second chor starts? I'm very desperate for a solution. Time critical. -vern

Hello - I tried to open AM and the words come up - License has expired (-3) this has never happened to me before - I am guessing it is the new way it is being done? And is it as simple as going to http://www.hash.com/store/index.php?main_p...f43d22eb17a474a and paying for it and downloading it? Thanks, Eric

Hey everyone! Just wanted to post some links I have found useful in my modeling. I have included blueprint links as well as DEMs & model sheets that are great to use as rotoscopes. Some of these have been around since I first got started back in 99 while others are newer...all links work. http://www.the-blueprints.com/index.php?blueprints/ http://www.anime-model-sheets.com/ http://www.3dbug.com/?blueprints;ln,en http://www.suurland.com/ http://animationarchive.net/Model%20Sheets/index.php http://www.aviastar.org/index2.html http://www.3dmodelart.com.ar/docseng/eng_servicios5.htm http://www.battlefield.ru/content/view/201/102/lang,en/ http://www.c…

I've just started getting back into Animation:Master after a long absence and I've got a question about the way the various render modes display splines. In the wireframe view a 3 point spline looks nice and smoothly curved, but when I change to shaded & wireframe mode it looks like its made up of four straight line segments (2 between each control point.) When I recreate the "F" and "G" patch examples in Jeff Cantin's Basic Splinemanship tutorial the patch form looks like a six sided polygon rather than a curved spline. When I render it looks fine but the shaded mode display is very jagged. Is this normal display behavior or do I need to change something to g…

I know there's been a lot of alpha channel talk lately, but I don't think this has been touched on- I'm using a .TGA sequence to rotoscope a 3D element into my real footage. One problem is the shadows. While I've read tutorials that suggested making objects that match those in the scene, and then project the same decal from your main camera onto those, I think having a live actor in the shot makes this more complicated. What would be ideal to me as compositor, would be a way to export the ball and some darkness under itself softened by another alpha layer. In my mind the way to do that would be to make the surfaces that receive shadows, and then t…

So anyways for christmas i got these Jeff Lew Animation video's. and the last one is a tutorial. So i found where to get the character i needed for the tutorial and downloaded him and tried him on AM. He has a skeleton, but when i try to animate with him, a lot of points dont work, like the foot targets and the hip targets . also certain parts of him when you move it just pulls the part off of him, like if you grab a certain arm bome, the arm just comes right off of the character. Is it possible that im not downloading it right, and im missing something. If any of you know whats going on, heres the link to where you download the guy …

So I watched a demo 34 minute tutorial by Jeff Lew on his website, and I was struck by how fluidly he is able to manipulate his models. When animating, I've never had the option of creating poses as quickly as he does, because my refresh rate is so much slower. I've got a 1 year old iMac Core2 Duo, with an ATI RadeonHD2400, and I thought that made my experience good. But now that I've glimpsed the other side, I'm just wondering if I'm missing some drivers or something, because he made this video SIX YEARS AGO, and he's putting my animating experience to shame. Thoughts? I mean, I have a second monitor, but when posing I'm largely moving my wrist a tiny bit and wa…

This model has rendered fine in the past. Now certain patches do not render in some frames, creating a flickering effect. I've uploaded a .mov file so you can see what's happening. I've also uploaded an image that I rendered previously. You can see that it rendered fine. I've been using A:M for years and this is the first time I've seen this happen. Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks

I am an Animation teacher that has been using Animation Master in my classroom for 10 years. Recently my tech support department helped me to upgrade from Animation Master 98 to the 2008 version 15.5. It's a tremendous leap, that has left virtually all of my old classroom assignments and tutorials (with step by step instruction) completely obsolete. I too have found that I completely lack the understanding of the software to properly teach my students anything beyond basic model building. My problem has always been simple, our network configuration using a HASP driver has never allowed me or my students to access the basic libraries and help menus. I would love…

If I have video footage that involves motion, let's say a pan, and I want to apply this video as the background to my main A:M camera (for the sake of putting things in the right place), is there a way to automate this camera's movement to match the original camera's, so that the scene stays stationary while the camera has a pan?

I've been experimenting with the bouncing ball, and I've just finished texture mapping my soccer ball (previously using a mono-toned ball), officially entering the realm where the object's rotation actually matters. The problem I hit pretty quickly is that if a ball rolls let's say just 45 degrees before being lifted, in order to simply raise it, instead of holding 2 and dragging it, I have to alternate between two directions, or enter a perfect side view- and the latter only works if the ball has a pretty direct trajectory, and makes it hard to line up with my rotoscope. There has to be an easier way- to rotate the ball, while keeping the translation angles po…

Hey folks. I have a bit of a delima. I am making a short subject film, and the render times are a little out there for the small choreographies that I'm doing. I just spent 72 hours with my computer tied up rendering an eight second choreography. Unfortunately, it was a 75 hour render, and when it crashed at 72 hours, the avi was unuseable. It is clear to me that the most memory expensive bit in the choreography is the warehouse-brick-front and the street/sidewalk. Attached is a copy of the image. The building, street/sidewalk, and fire hydrant are the only non-moving items. The horn character and the van (on the right) both move. The character moves behind the…

Hi! I'm good at a number of things in A:M. Materials is not one of them. Does anyone have access to a good Army-type camouflage material or have good instructions on how to create a convincing one using the Material plug-ins? There's an old post with a material that has "extended" .trb files, but when I put them in my plug-in folders, A:M says it can't load them. Any help would be appreciated. Tim

How does this work? Sometimes I seem to be able to do it but others... not so much. I can drag select a "group" in the chor and move those items but it doesn't put in a key frame for translation. I need to move about 200 model shortcuts together as a unit and key frame the translation. After selecting them all if I use the arrow keys or type in the translation properties only the last one selected will move. In the past I've been able to select a bunch of chor objects this way to set "Active" on or off... but after awhile it stops working. Any help appreciated. -vern

So I've made my 2nd bouncing ball attempt: http://homepage.mac.com/somniac/.Pictures/bball2.mov Of note is that the first two bounces should be perfect. That's because I made an Excel spreadsheet that applies the Equations of Motion: Download Spreadsheet By typing in the first contact coordinates, and then the coordinates of the first apex, as well as the coefficient of restitution, (as long as the x-coordinates stay positive) and the number of frames between the first contact and the first apex, it computes up to the first 20 frames (for now) and the coordinates of the 2nd apex. Now the problem: You'll notice the third bounce looks like crap! …

So anyways i had an idea, so i used thom for it made him walk all the way to the camera, and then i wanted to animate him knocking on the camera. but one big problem, after he did the action, at 00:20:00 i keyframed it, and brought him to a stand. but it affected the whole action because after i put him to a stand at 00:20:05 i brought the arms down and moved one leg. then when i played through the whole thing he waled all the way, but his arms werent moving and neither was one leg. How can i fix this, and how can i put in an action and t…
