One of the things I enjoyed while in Japan was discovering books and magazine devoted to Animation:Master. I think I once told the (rather humorous) story about how my family was on vacation and my father in law and I stepped into a bookstore and because it turned out to be an 'adult' bookstore I didn't really find much of anything worth buying except a few random kids books but once back on the road he revealed he had purchased a video. Curious to see what he had purchased I inquired and immediately went into shock upon seeing the cover of the video... he'd purchased the Haruwo video by Shao Guee that I had a (small) part in subtitling/translating into English (I was …

Hey all, quick question: What's the single PC upgrade that has the most effect on how fast A:M runs with a complicated chor on the screen/s? Got a 8-core with 16g ram, but only a 750GTX as a vid card. Would a newer video card make make it smoother rotating the landscape, etc? Thanks, Rich

Hello! Two questions in a single hour! Crazy! Anyway, I'm trying to create a beach ball sort of coloring pattern, and am running into a problem. I've tried selecting alternating columns, using the patch select tool, and by selecting CPs, but when I assign a color, it's affecting the entire ball. So, I tried applying the color to just one group, and then adding more patches to that group, and I can't seem to make that happen, either. When I select a patch on the next column, it does a kind of "select everything in between original group and new selection", kinda like shift-selecting an entire line or paragraph of text in a word document. Does the same thing if I try …

Hiya, So, I actually could/should have asked this during the get together, but I didn't think to. I've noticed that for some functions to work, you have to "click-select" a node. You can't box select it. Lathe is an example. Why is that? Is it something to do with how splines work? Or is it just something that was programmed that way, and remained so through all the versions? It's not a problem. It's just as easy either way, I was just curious if there was a reason behind it. Thanks!

So, I'm determined to model a character in A:M. I went on Google and found a character reference that has simple, sharp enough lines for me to follow, and decided to just do it. It has front, side and back views, so I have that covered. I've seen a few different tutorials now, and it seems each one has its own style/approach, and so there's not "one right way". So, I'm picking up things from each that I like and make sense to me. For example, using a sphere as an eyeball proxy to model around, from t he Bill Young face modeling CD. Not very far in at all, yet, and I'm expecting to have lots of mistakes along the way, but I'm saving a lot, so I should be okay. Just going…

Hello! So, I was just over on Twitch.TV, browsing their channels, and decided to see if A:M had any representation there. Surprisingly, there wasn't, and so I thought I'd come here and make a post about it. For those who aren't aware, Twitch.TV is a website that has been, traditionally, set up for gamers to stream their gameplay, for tournaments, etc. However, they've also expanded by adding a "Creative" category, where artists of all types will stream and demonstrate their skills with a variety of tools (including hand-drawn, painting, etc). There's also a presence of other 3D modeling/animating apps on there. Many game developers will do live streams showing them wo…

Hello, Work has been killing me today was my shortest day in 2+ weeks at 12 hours. I'm going to get back on top of emails tonight/tomorrow after work. I also see that I can not see the 'help desk' forums I will fix that too. It looks I have been missing a few posts there. I will update the FAQ to cover this question. But if users get 'wrong host -4' email support@hash.com after following these steps. https://www.hash.com/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=13&id=17&artlang=en If they send the old master0.lic file we can see what changed.

I've been using v18.0p for a month or so now and I've noticed that pasting even small chunks of patches takes what seems to be an unusually long time. For instance, a copy of the side window on this fare box: It's only four patches but when you hit Cntl-V it takes more than 15 sec. of the rotating "working" icon before it actually pastes a copy of those four patches. In v17 this same process takes less than a second. Is there a v18 switch I'm unaware of that is creating extra "bookkeeping" to go on in the background?

Particle Illusion is a nifty plugin for AE. I have the stand alone version. But you need to be able to track the motion. Steffen has an "Export" listed for that purpose.(PI-Motion) Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get the data for a bone or null to track using the "PI-Motion" export. Is there a thread to learn how this is done?? Does the PI-Motion export work???

Working in V15, OSX 10.68 I'm trying to help a textiles student on the course I'm doing. She has some very elaborate designs which I decaled onto a very simple planar model of the 4metres x 2metres x 2 metres space. Her designs are 50cm by 50 cm, so I applied them once, and asked it to repeat them across the surface seamlessly. Unfortunately it came out with this effect. Rather than repeating them laterally and vertically it mirrored them symetrically. Is there a way around this or would I have to apply them all singley as separate stamps ? Any help gratefully received Simon I did a test with a simpler decal. G Test project.prj

Hey everyone. I need a bone to spin more than 360 degrees in an animation. I need it to be able to spin around and around many times. I recall having to switch the bone to Euler for this, but I can't seem to remember how or where to go in order to get that done. Do any of you know where to do this and how????

I made the transition to WIn10 on my PC at the beginning of June and installed A:M ver.18.0m shortly there after. I've had almost no teething problems for the last two weeks but this occurred after yesterdays' Windows update which may just be a coincidence. This is a screen grab of a realtime render and a good approximation of a final render. This is a screen render in Render Lock mode. This is a screen render in Render mode. I upgraded my Nvidia graphics drivers and re-installed ver. 18.0m without solving the problem. This doesn't happen in ver. 17. I see that Hash Reports is currently broken so I'm open to suggestions.

Hello, at this time https://www.hash.com/reports uploading is broken. I'm working on a fix. Right now upload loads into the database and I think after all of these years that is starting to push the limits. I'm going to try to change it to 'disk' upload but I need to test if the breaks the old database uploads. I will be posting here when I get it fixed or I break it more.. Let's not hope the latter this time!!!1 Thank You, Jason Simonds

I seem to recall a simplemethod for doing this... Perhaps someone can set me on the right path. I have a material that is saved as two different materials. The main difference between the two is that one is set with displacement and the other is for color. Both materials can then be applied to a group to better control the texture. That's not part of the problem... just a little background/setup. I dropped the color material onto a different group in the model and tweaked the settings. I like the changes so want to keep that new material. The issue is how to save/export that material as a new material. If I stepped away from the computer for awhile the a…

I am trying to do a little simulation of a fishing lure. I rigged up the lure with hook and have the root bone on a cube that is my starting spot. Not sure how I go about getting the force to work. I set Newton on and have the default attributes on just as a starting point. I know I flubbed this up, any suggestions would be awesome. Eventually I will be tweaking the model design out then making a prototype of it and then sand cast the final in Zamak. Base design I have works but I need to fiddle with the volume of material to fit specific weights ie 1/4 oz, 3/8 oz etc. luretest.zip

So lately in V18p, I've been crashing over and over when moving bones to different locations in the PWS bone tree. I click on a bone and drag it to the new location and A:M crashes. It doesn't happen everytime, so I haven't been able to solidly replicate it. But when I'm moving bones in the PWS it crashes. I have noticed that if I'm moving with the CTRL button to duplicate a bone it sometimes happens as well. Anyone else dealing with such an issue.

So I've been using A:M since 1999-2000 as many of you have. And just like all you others, I've watched the software experience great strides, successes, and growing pains. As for my own work using A:M, I've experienced uncountable "user errors"(I laugh at myself as I think of all the errors I've made), and struggled at times with bugs, glitches, long render times, my own mistakes, etc. BUT today I ran a short render and sat back marveling at how far A:M has come and improved. Now whether I've improved so much, who can say. BUT my hats off to the team for pushing ahead and implementing things that have helped us artists soo much. Thanks for putting time into …

Hello, Able to model using the window "action" is interesting. However, to my knowledge, we need to export the action in a new *.mdl, and open the new model in a new window, to take advantage of the changes. Is there a faster way, without having to export to a new *.mdl, but applied directly the action to the origin *.mdl?

Doh! I just had one of those painful reminders that we should save often and save with incremented filenames/numbers. I had spend entirely too much time modeling a character when I thought to save the model. All is well. Then I began to adjust the color of groups in the model. Everything working fine. I'm really starting to like the progess of the model. Then I accidentally enlarged a group and it took over another section of the mesh, giving it the wrong color. A quick undo didn't work as anticipated and then I deleted the entire mesh except for the eyes.... Gah! No problem... I can fix that. Then... My fat fingers and dull mind accidentally Con…

I've done this before and know that there is a specific place we have to look to set this but I forget. Perhaps someone can get me back on track. I have a faint recollection that this is best set immediately upon creation of the pose slider as well. The most basic example is the On/Off pose where the pose is set to On by default (which without setting is 'Not Set' by default) In the case of a percentage pose the example might be to set the default as 0 on a scale of -100 to 100. As I have to occasionally revisit this It'd be good to get this cemented in my mind. Thanks in advance! Edit: I may have answered my question already but I'm hoping my a…

I was resplining an "A" that didn't come out of the FontWizard quite right and have created what should be a legal four-sided patch... four CPs, connected by splines and not all on the same spline... and yet it doesn't fill in. If I copy just those four CPs and paste them to the right they do fill in but not if they are part of the whole mesh. Anyone know what is wrong? (This is not a Hide Backfaces problem) Fixin A.mdl

I'm over my head in a rushed animation project, so I don't have time to file reports, but wanted to put these down as I encounter them so that I don't forget... and some may not be issues or are already known. When I'm done and have recovered, I'll file them. 1) JPEGs don't seem to work. Can't get a JPEG file to import into the PWS. I was noticing that an old material I used wasn't doing anything and I realized that it used a jpeg support file and A:M was importing it as a blank image. Changing it to a PNG file allowed it to load normally. I usually prefer not to use JPEGs, but weird that it's not letting me import them. 2) Shaded Renders getting stuck on "CPU SSA…

Hi there, working quite a while with A:M, I noticed that there is quite some areas where undo will not work at all. First and foremost if you make changes to the bias handles of a CP, Undo will not take those changes made back. Also when you work on a model with a Decal applied. If you delet something, take the changes back with undo, the undo will not restore the deleted and restored CP in the stamps. Cheers Heiner

Kudos to Steffen for the recent improvements in OBJ texture importing in v18p. Thanks! And to make this something of a useful topic... here's something related to consider... There are a gazillion models out there on the internet to play with but I recently tested some of the Models donated to the Sweet Home 3D community. The process is pretty straightforward: download the library of models, open them in Sweet Home 3D, export as OBJ, import into A:M. The models page: http://www.sweethome3d.com/freeModels.jsp The program download: http://www.sweethome3d.com/download.jsp What is particular useful with the program is how you can use it to recolor/…

In this (non-A:M) rendering, depth of field is achieved as postrender blurring via a generated depth buffer. I wonder of this same technique can be used in A:M? This would for me be preferrable to the standard way of doing dof in A:M, which involve loooong (sometimes up to 20 minutes) rendertimes to look good (as comparison the above picture rendered in a little under 2 seconds, including the blurring process). Apparently there IS a depth buffer present in A:M, but I have never come to grips with how to use it. It would be so nice if this could be done inside A:M itself without having to use some compositing software like After Effects (which I cannot a…

Hello Hashers- In the past I have not gotten into designing materials much because there is a such a wealth of materials already available designed by others to choose from, and Dark Tree is also amazing... ...however I am trying to teach myself how to think like a Materials designer and I realized that I have no idea how to design a material for a barber pole. The idea of designing a spiral color wrapping around a cylinder is beyond me..and designing two alternating colors is again bewildering. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks! Tom

Have started trying to model a Trial motorbike for use in the current project. They all seemto have spoked wheelsrather than the alloy type used by road racersa nd production types. What might be the best way to model the spokes ? I recall someone suggesting using "render as lines" to a similar question in the past. Have tried that but, it came out as a solid disc. Deleted the rim part, leaving the splines behind, and they don't show up as lines, although that is selected under properties. Does Toon render have to be engaged for that to work or, am I missing something ? ( again ) Thanks simon

I've often made use of the ability to hide CP's in the object so they don't show in the cho when animating, hiding the rest of the body when checking two figures hand positions in a dance sequence for example. I wondered if there was a way to set that up using pose sliders so as to get a timelapse effect ? What I want to do is to hide parts of a house and have them revealed over time so as to get a time lapse effect. It would be possible to do it with iterated models, substituted as the the chor progressed (?) but I wondered if it was possible to hide the cps viapose sliders or another mechanism ? simon

Building a townscape for the new. Happy Families, project I'm hoping to set up the lighting this evening. In 3ds max ( many moons ago ) there was a "sun" seting so you could specify where the location was and what time of day, then the software would produce a sun effect for those settings. Working in V17, is there an equivalent in AM or, is there a global illumination setting. If so, could somebody kindly point me in the direction of the info on how to set it up and use it? What I'm after is a single light source, giving a, very rough, approximation of daylight. Rather than have to introduce lots of lights. simon

I was just going through some of the old Character Rigging tutorials that Raf Anzovin compiled for Animation:Master back in the early 2000's and remembered that Anzovin Studios, which currently produce a set of killer rigging/animation plug-ins for Maya, began by programming for and working with A:M. Does anyone know if The Setup Machine can still be found anywhere for A:M or if it even would still work? If not, has anything come along since then that assists with the rigging process for humanoid and non-humanoid characters? Just puzzling...
