I just saw the Joe Daniel's video walkthrough of VR drawing here: xhttps://vimeo.com/211768999 And thought... hmm... I wonder how close I can get to that basic premise using A:M. After quickly modeling, rigging and animating a swingset like the one in the demo I quickly got to the point of drawing over the animating swing while the sequence was playing. A problem arose where I couldn't get A:M to keep playing while drawing so I used the HAMR viewer instead. Ran into one problem with the HAMR viewer in that it didn't want to recognize the swingset model. Turns out HAMR just needed a Choreography. Cool. While none of this is much to look at... I'm pleased t…

Once upon a time I was attending the wrapup gathering at Martin's house for initial foray into 'Tin Woodman of Oz' and suddenly felt the urge to depart wisdom to Martin Hash. Martin had just revealed he had a boxful of the original Preston Blair books on Animation and wow, what treasures they were*. With regard to the Preston Blair approach to lip sync I explained that I thought it should only take four or five shapes to account for all that was required for lip sync**. Martin graciously nodded and smiled as if to say, 'thanks for stating the obvious Rodney' and the conversation pressed on to other things. But the idea of using limited shaping for lipsync still reocc…

Background HAMR (Hash Animation:Master Realtime) and WebHAMR (HAMR for browsers) was an effort of several years ago (2009) to press A:M content out to new platforms. From the basic write up: The ultimate goal of HAMR was of course to push A:M content to web browsers but the API allowed other access as well (as demonstrated in the standalone HAMRviewer). Some general thoughts: - HAMR tech still works quite well although I don't know the extent of whether the API is used by anyone and some connectivity has been depricated over the ensuing years. - HAMR tech didn't get out of the initial development phase (as such it didn't get to the Mac port phase) - The Mac port and so…

I have asked a large number of questions as I have been learning how to operate Animation:Master. I used to save URLs so that I could revisit the many helpful answers that I received. Unfortunately, my computer got a virus last summer and had to be cleaned of all contents. I no longer have my own index of former questions, and I tried to use the search engine here for topics that I am sure I asked about before. I also tried to search under my name. The search engine is finding no entries, regardless of where I search. Is the search engine not operating, or is there something extra I need to do?

Avalanche Software that was shuttered by Disney after they closed their gaming divisions is back in business again under the Warner Brothers banner. Interestingly enough, their first major project is a Disney property; the 'Cars 3' game. http://www.polygon.com/2017/1/24/14371888/cars-3-video-game-avalanche-software-warner-bros I'm not surprised. Their breadth of experience and talent.is substantial and has been since their early days of using Animation:Master. The downside? If Avalanche at Disney had 300 employees they now have approx. 100 and while it can be assumed that some of the 200 stayed at Disney in some capacity most had to seek other opportunities…

No I won't be getting one but sure... I want one. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/line-us/line-us-the-little-robot-drawing-arm?ref=NewsDTFeb2317 More evidence of robots invading the home. What I like about this is how it combines several technologies together in ways that haven't been merged before. The magnetic base is an example of that. Edit: It appears there are no longer any units available in the first batch (of 1000 units). Not sure when the next will be available.

I'm posting this mainly as a reminder to follow up on this. Attached is a comparison of two sound files. On the bottom, the original "I've got a Secret" audio and (above) a quickly edited version that accomplishes a few things: 1) Removal of unwanted noise 2) Adjusted timing 3) Adjusted volume* 4) Separation, removal of sound/sound bytes on a frame by frame basis 5) Keyframe and Spline-based refinement (Free!) *Appeared to work well but need more testing. Not yet explored in any depth but available for use: - Automatic Time Stretching (All or by Selection) - Integration with Papagayo and Magpie Pro Also attached are the original and updated wav…

Been in the market for a new video card, looking for something that has workstation performance without the big price ticket and came across the Fury cards that have 4096 bit data path. Seemed interesting but wonder if they have any double precision available on them? Seems so far in my hunt for a new card the range I was looking at is the Quadro m4000 or AMD FirePro w7100 or w8100. Not even sure if those are worh the money they are asking. I don't run a 4k display and only use my single 21ux cintiq so 4gb of memory should be plenty. The issues I have with my GTX 950 is limited zoom range on cad models and the shaded surfaces aren't exactly matched with edges when…

Wondering if anyone has tried Marmoset Toolbag 3? Was thinking it could be a good real time render and viewer since they seem to have a player for ios, android and win. www.marmoset.co/toolbag/ I do quite a bit of t-shirt art for my customers, have some stock models I made in AM way back but it is a pain to render them out and email. In some cases sending pdf mockups isn't always practical especially if the pdf is large. Having a good webgl viewer might be a good secure answer. Also be cool if possible to have articulated models the clients can move around on their phones!

(Moderator update: A work-around for this problem has been found. See post # 26) SO I'm sure that there is a place for this topic but I don't have time to go hunting. Here's my problem: So applied for the AM 18 trial version, downloaded it and followed all the instructions and it is telling me that I need an activation code??? I sent a message to support to see if I can get that resolved. In the interim and because I just did some serious upgrades to my machine, I thought I would try to get one of my older versions to work. When I say older I mean v11,12, or 13. Umm yeah, no matter what I effin do, they won't run. Even when I go through the "compatibility troubleshoote…

Hadn't modeled anything in awhile, so I thought I'd use the holidays to play. I had never owned one of these Funko Pop! figures, but for Christmas I was given a set of five of them (Animaniacs Yakko, Wakko, Dot plus Pinky and the Brain.) I've seen them everywhere, though. Just for my own amusement, I decided to make one of me. It looked like a simple model to do and it gave me an excuse to try out the v19 alpha on a modeling project. I'll have to check into trying to reproduce some of the issues I ran into. I had several times where I had to hit the "f" key multiple times to get the normals to flip and the delete key sometimes had the same problem. I actu…

So my darling daughter has made a whole bevy of make human characters for s story she is writing. She asked if I could bring them into am and see if they could be rigged and animated. I tried one character (below) and while it imported, some weirdness ensued. The big issue is that while I can see the imported model in wireframe mode in the modeling window, it disappears in shaded mode. The mesh appears ok (though way way too dense). Has anyone had experience bringing in these obj files before? Ryan-20170104T200945Z.zip

Hey, I'm guessing this topic has been discussed before and I've seen reference to it, but I am interested to know about the application of RAM with Animation Master. I have 32G of ram for my Mac and I feel that I should have some powerful efficiency with using dense meshes and more complicated hair set-ups but I feel that I am not getting what I need still. I am desperate to know how efficient I can get my set-up to be. I also run A:M on PC with solid state hard drive and 24G ram. I want to make some pretty complicated scenes that require a lot of processing. Is this possible with A:M? Can it utilize the RAM and processing to make the magic happen? Adam

If you would like to be considered for the Body Mechanics Boot Camp (seats are limited!) do one of the following... - A bouncing ball entering from screen left and exiting screen right or - Any character doing one broad jump, from left to right. Don't spend more than an afternoon on it, but do your best and send me the PRJ, with everything embedded, in a forum private message by December 31

Body Mechanics Boot Camp won't be a "10 weeks to a new career in animation!" kind of class. Our goals are narrowly focused. As i have interacted with forum members over the years I've noticed that many are not using A:M to their advantage for animation and are often lacking in animation fundamentals they need to get good results. I'm envisioning maybe 10 exercises over 10 weeks with the aim of introducing proper use of the A:M tools and developing your eye for better motion in your animations. We'd start with a bouncing ball because that is a key entry point for some animation and workflow fundamentals. Hopefully we'd get up to walking characters because that also …

For whatever reason--Maybe I pressed a button without realizing it or Maybe Windows 10 is doing something--shaded and wire frame does not look the same. Instead of showing the CPs and splines on the surface, it is showing them throughout the figure, even from the other side of the figure. The view just adds a semitransparent color to regular wire frame. What do I press to get just cps and wire-frame back on the outer surface? Thanks.

For those that haven't seen Disney's new 'Jungle Book', the end credits are quite a treat. I see that the credits are online at The Art of the Title blog. It features an old motif, that of a book opening and pages turning but with some very detailed CG animation. At the beginning the actual book from the original Disney feature can be seen just prior to the credit roll. The practical effect of the book moving around was reportedly accomplished by poking at the book from underneath the table. http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-jungle-book-2016/ Well worth checking out as is the entire movie.

Mark Largent brought this to my attention on Facebook...Walt Disney died 50 years ago today. A whole universe of things have happened since then in just 50 years. So much has changed and so much has come and gone and come and gone again. I'm just old enough to remember him introducing "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" each week on Sunday night TV. I had to imagine the color since we were too cheap to get a color set. That and "Bonanza" were the big watch-TV-with-popcorn-and-a-root-beer-float event for our family. I recall my mom showing me this drawing or one like it in the morning paper.

As I have diverse versions of the Animation master, I came to a strange habbit in the workarounds of them. After construckting some models with the help of rotoscopes, I started up AMv11.1b and added some tga files to make a new model. Every tga file(or jpg etc) I load comes up blanc and I can't work with them. The only way to see something is using the render button, but that's no way of using it. I thought they were made to use in shaded and wireframe rendermode. What's the reason these rotoscopes appear as white shades and not the way they are intended? It doesn't matter what I import, decals rotoscopes, they all go blanc. For info: I use it on win98 co…

Sorry, I'm a skipping record about this (not a broken one), but I am on a mad search for face capture that will work with Animation Master. Animation Master works well for me over here (even on MAC) and so I can afford to sit and think about luxurious ideas such as body and face capture. I have said that I think one of A:M's great things is its ability to use .bvh files. When I discovered this it was a renaissance ! Anyhow, I cannot find a reliable face capture program that can somehow translate to A:M. I have busted my butt to try to get the A:M track 2 to work and although the tracking seems to be there somewhere, the program is too temperamental to be of use to a…

Just returned from watching Disney's Moana and... Disney is still at the top of their game. I started to model Maui when I got home... but failed miserably. I don't think I can fault the visuals in any way. As for the story itself... They rather oddly left a few dangling plot/character points but I'm willing to bet they've got plans for those in the future (ala spin off property or sequel). What makes it especially odd is that those elements are perhaps the high points for character merchandising with regard to the tale. I can only assume they thought they risked detracting from the main storyline and the focus on Moana by echoing those elements back into t…

I have a complex choreography set up with a number of original models. I included a lamp with a shade that I modeled and located a lamp at the location of the bulb in the choreography with the bulb being transparent glass material and the lampshade with a custom material with varying transparency values. I once had the choreography setup to cast shadows from the lampshade across the scene. I made changes to the choreography and lost the settings now I can't get it set so that the lampshade casts a pattern. Does anyone know how to do that correctly?

Its a bit early to release this but some major changes to configuration and pricing are pending for Renderman and the Renderman suite of tools. A few details are now emerging at the Renderman site. Ed Catmull has a (very) short video making the announcement here: http://renderman.pixar.com/view/non-commercial From the site: Note: I registered with my current renderer entered as "Animation:Master (Netrender)". Yep... time again to cover some Adobe news that intersects with our interests... Abobe has released the preview of Fuse which we've seen before under a different name. As part of Adobe CC, if you subscribe to that you get Fuse thrown in to the mix. What is Fuse? Fuse is a bipedal (human) mesh generator that has many custom sliders that allow for modification of the mesh. It's primary purposes is to send the mesh off to Mixamo or to Photoshop CC where it can be articulated/animated. Fuse does also allow export to .OBJ format which is useful for A:M Users. While the mesh is dense for the humans the acouterments/clothing are reasonable. Perhaps best ye…

Microsoft always has a bevy of critics eager to pounce on any effort they put forth but this one is aligned in a way that purveyors of 3D modeling and animation should take note. Not that they will be able to ignore it... Microsoft recently announced several products that point to their behind the scenes efforts to move the computing experience forward. One of these is their move to improve the desktop experience via the Surface Studio computer. Another is their forays into the world of mixed reality with new VR headsets. But the one that I find most applicable and compelling at the moment is on one hand slightly trivial but on the other should prove to be a long …

This is a pretty good overview/intro to the concept and process of storyboarding: xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQsvhq28sOI It includes some reference work from some well known movies as well as storyboard examples from them. A key statement near the beginning is that artistic talent is not required to work out a storyboard. Often simple words a stick figures can be enough to capture the essentials. Added detail is primarily of importance when others involve themselves in a project.

I haven't seen a topic related to this movie and... given the interest in stopmotion around here thought a post might be in order. I saw the film last week and thought it was a 'perfect' movie on many levels. By perfect I mean so carefully crafted and finely detailed that I was completely captivated. I was impressed by it's sense of originality and yet many elements of the familiar as well. The story itself... well crafted. There is a lot to talk about relative to 'Kubo' to include how computer modeling and animation drove their 3D printing) which continues to bring stopmotion into the digital age. A side topic of interest to me is that of the physical aspe…
