The thumbnail isn't but the main image is.

Nice. Thanks!

It the little things that make my day. ;)

For informatinal purposes here's a view of the difference.

Want to make sure my eyes aren't just going bad:

post-8492-1152231807.jpg

Not so good

post-8492-1152232794.jpg

A bit better (a lot of artifacting for such a large image!)

He's inserting a link to the actual attachement in his post. There's a button for attaching images... just right click on a thumbnail attachment and select copy shortcut then paste the shortcut into the image location box when it comes up.

What Jody said.

Linking forum images is a little harder now than it used to be.

Before you could just Right Click whack 'Properties' and copy the link to the image.

Now this only gets you the link to the thumbnail and looking at the properties for the full size image returns a forum address.

Luckily the A:M Forum has an answer to this delima.

You can grab the thumbnail address and just delete '_thumb' from the address.

So...

http://www.hash.com/forums/uploads/post-84...32794_thumb.jpg

becomes

http://www.hash.com/forums/uploads/post-8492-1152232794.jpg

and the full image displays.

Much better than reposting an image (gotta conserve that server space!) BUT look out for those large image sizes! Large images in the forum tend to turn people off and for those on dialup... longer waits.

I believe the thumbnails were an answer to this downloading problem.

Exercises completed 9

Here's exercise 9. I agree that those tutorials are really helpful. In every exercise there's something in the book that I just don't get, and the tutorial makes it clearer. This time it was the duplicator wizard.

I don't have a plug-ins choice in the right-click menu. I can't duplicate the petals.

Do I have to load something that I haven't loaded?

I called Technical support and, since I have the 2006 Yeti version of the software, they showed me where to get the update for my program - Hash.com, Software Updates, AM2006.exe

Everything is working fine now :)

...and a table too if my eyes don't deceive me! Nice job. :)

John,

I meant to comment on your animation (thought I did!).

Thats great storytelling (in its simplest of forms).

What's that Spidey use to always say, "With great talent comes great opportunity?"*

Use that talent wisely my friend. You'll go far.

*Note: I will have to strangle anyone who thinks that is what Spider-Man actually said.

Observations: Struggled a little with smartskin....

I also ran into a glitch or two which seemed unrecoverable, but couldn't make it reproducable enough to log a bug report. I just happened to have a couple of copies and change the file name at major junctures.

No such thing as backups just happening. Looks like you've developed some good saving habits.

Save. Save Often. Save Incrementally.

One possible naming convention might be ProjectFileName001.prj, ModelName01.mdl or other similar structure. Some prefer to use dates but beware possible sorting issues unless you use the YYYYMMDD format. An optimum date friendly file save might be: ProjectFileName20061231.

Even then if you save more than once a day (and everyone does right?) you want to increment that too: ProjectFileName20061231_01.

The most important thing is that saving incrementally should work for you.

In case of harddrive failure you want to consider backups as well.

Nice animation.

I'm trying to recall where I last saw a similar animation... not Teletubbies...

The only thing I'd change might be the sun bounce.

A ease out as it bounces at the end would smooth it out.

The quickness is spot on though... "Hey its morning... time to rise and shine!"

Very nice Jim.

Learning: This was a good review as it has been a couple months since I've used A:M. I forgot to shade my flower while creating an action and she bowed the wrong way! Decided to not fix it though.

Exercerise Completed: Flower Power EX #9

Comments/Suggestions: It's been almost a year since I posted my original flower. I went on to Exercise 10 and then my PC crashed (not related to A:M) and I lost all of my exercise files. Haven't really worked with A:M since - not sure why. Just getting back into it and decided to try and model a face on my flower - perhaps next time I should try going through the face modeling tutorial first - it looks more like an alien is growing out of the flower!.

Happy New Year, All!

Great to have you back Michael!

I don't think I have any of your exercise images. Sorry.

Thats another good reason to post here in the forum as I should have backups of most images that have been posted here.

(I should back up to a CDrom or two though)

Hope this computer keeps you happy and animating for a long long time!

Thanks, Rodney. I do believe the old images/movies are still on the forums, as I have posted them all. I haven't checked for them, though. Thus far I have gone through Exercise 9 (well, 10, but I didn't post that so I'm redoing it now :P). Redoing the flower this time I definitely have a better understanding of A:M's spline-based modeling - and learned a lot about my friends "break" and "detach" - they were instrumental in getting something that resembled an "alien" face on the flower.

Exercise Completed: #9: Flower Power

Date Completed: Jan 20, 2007

Remarks: where a flower gets power. Personally, I think the ending is just a little too creepy. I would try to mess with the timing or the percentage of the pose, but this section is focused on modeling and not animation I want to move on to the other modeling exercises.

That works as storytelling for me.

As far as the end I think it provides a unique take on the standard flower with a face theme.

Adding eyes would make it more accessible but then you'd lose that uniqueness.

By all mean... move on to next next exerices. You've definitely completed this one.

Nice job!

Michael,

I'll look for your earlier exercises.

Sometimes I get confused by changing avatars and forget who did what in the forum.

Here's hoping that I'll be a bit more organized in the certification process in 2007.

Exercise: #9 Power to da Flower

Completed: half an hour ago on the first of February, 2007.

post-8837-1170391090_thumb.jpg

Notes: The duplicator didn't work last time I did this one (think Nov 2005) but everything worked just dandy this time. :D I'm really pleased with how the water turned out. I looked up water's index of refraction to make sure it would look right. (it's 1.33 BTW)

PS: The next few projects might come a bit slower. I got recruited into the 'Mario Movie' group project.

Go to it! As long as you are learning and exercising what you learn in A:M you'll come out ahead.

Don't stay away too long though as it gets harder to return the more you stay away.

Great refraction - did it take a long time to render? I was 'playing' once and gave up, because it took so long. But I was probably doing a 20gazillion multipass, not knowing what I was doing.

Posted

The render took five minutes tops. My setting are pretty simple compared to some I've seen.

Ambiance occlusion: ON

Reflections on: levels 3

No multipass.

Lack of IoR setting on the vase probably helped.

So it took longer to post my success (and find the katakana for my name in MS Word) then it did to render. :D

Al,

Would you believe there have been very few vases added to this exercise? (Chris's up there ^ notwithstanding)

Thats even stranger given this is a modeling exercise with a focus on lathing.

Hmmm... its the simple things that sometimes escape us.

I guess what I'm trying to say is... nice vase! :)

Very nice, Robin. It's more like a sea creature under water, which I like. Reminded me of my diving days.

hmmm, that gives me some ideas. I'll have to work on it after I finish with the plane exercise.......
