    If you ever wondered why "likes" disappeared from the forum... it was my fault. I figured they reduced actual commenting and thought that getting rid of the "like" button might encourage more responses to posts. I still figure that is true but since removing the option to "like" things didn't increase the commenting, we might as well have them back. Thanks to Rodney for trying my experiment and for undoing it as well! I wonder if anyone will like this post...

    After reading the latest Martin's Minutes about "Charlie Brown Books" I remembered that I modeled a Snoopy vs Red Baron a few years back using Lightwave and was curious to try the Lightwave importer with A:M. After re examining the model I decided to model him from scratch in A:M. I just get a kick out of the elegance of spline patches vs subdivision modeling it seems like you can say more with less. Here is some progress of the model so far... still working on the hands and feet and will be modeling a scarf next.

    Hi Guys, Been experimenting with rendering some gem and glass like objects in A:M and decided to try my hand at rendering some quartz crystals. Have a few more things I'd like to add and experiment with in the scene so figure I'll keep adding here as a WIP when I get around to it. ( have to get back to my Snoopy post as well ) A few post tweaks were added in Photoshop like exposure and blurring.

    The first type of boxcar I built was the older style where the handbrake wheel is mounted horizontally above the roof line. In order to maximize the number of boxcars, I decided to cheat and put a different railroad line and specs on each side of a single car. This scheme only breaks down when looking at the end of a single car where you see the two different numbers. However once the two cars are connected together and their ends are somewhat obscured I now have two boxcars for the price of one model.

    Great comments on the rigging. Will have to go back and study it in more detail... ...but in the meantime here is what Rob taught me yesterday. I used 4 frame holds on the incremental increases in opacity to approximate the jerkiness of time lapse videos. timelapse.mp4

    Before I move on to the next railcar I beg your indulgence while I brag about getting a believable "look" to the rear running lights. The rear facing lenses are tinted red with the other three are tinted green. The light from the internal bulb is quasi collimated i.e. the lamps appear illuminated only if viewed close to on-axis with the lenses. I wheeled the caboose back into the dark factory to get a better view.

    The last three weeks has placed me in a funk that has been difficult to get out. WE are bombarded every day with bad news after bad news. In the last week I have decided that I will break out of this funk. One thing I have always done when I am down is to create something. Weather it is art work, models, model railroad, wood working items or even something with AM, it allows me to focus on what every I am doing and get away from all the news. We received some good news this week as our tests came back negative. Even though we have been sick the news lifted our spirits. I decided to create a character that has a "Jay Leno Chin". I wanted the character to be one that was once in good shape but has let himself go a little. One whose upper body was bigger than the larger for design style and the face is happy but that has some features that will allow for "large" facial expressions. I really wanted to concentrate on the shoulder area as I have always had issues on deformation. I decided to model the character with the arms extended down in the first position to see to rotation. Most of the character design wishes I had in my head are coming out. I still have a few things to tweak, but I am happy so far with the results. Anyway here is the New Guy

    Hi guys, I am currently spending (too much) time in VRChat (a software that is more like a multiplayer-game but meant to be used as a socialising platform to talk with other people and do stuff in a virtual world together with or without a VR headset). VRChat gives the possibility to upload own characters and worlds to the experience and so I had a look how that is done and brought my Animation:Master Plomper-Character as a fully functional avatar to that world. I might do a full blown video tutorial on it in future, but for now I just wrote a new blog article on the process. An 8-core chip that runs up to 4.3GHz yet only produces 35 watts of heat? I remember going to a show where someone was demonstrating a PC that ran at ... 200MHz! The fan sounded like a vacuum cleaner running and the exhaust felt like a hair dryer set on "high".

    The next boxcar is the more modern style with the brake wheel mounted vertically to the end wall. Once again I used the same model but put different signage on other side. CPR with NYC, N&W with PRR. I got carried away with detailing when I found a good reference image of a vintage NYC waybill. I reproduced it in PSPro and filled in the blanks with Lorem Ipsum words.

    Cards go boom. Admittedly over-sized cards but they do uniformly go boom. Edit: I just realised that you wanted the individual particles in the shape of a heart/club etc and not the shape of a playing card. Sorry, ignore me, carry on. House of cards0.mp4

    Next up, a flat car. I've always felt one's interest in passing flat cars is proportional to the loads they're carrying, making an endless line of container cars extremely boring. Having said that, large steel pipes are pretty plain as well (but low in patch count). So I went a bit overboard on the material textures for the rusty steel and woven tie down straps.

    Update for anyone who might be interested (Nobody, I'm sure but I have nobody else to talk to about it). I bit the bullet and made the separate Windows 7 partition to see if the dedicated graphics chip was detected or if the drivers would install aaaaaaand...It wasn't. So it's either broken or simply isn't in there (I'm not taking the laptop apart to check). I'm leaning towards it never being there to start with and the laptop being mislabeled by the guy who refurbished it. It's listed as a TM2t-2200 which has an i3 and ATI/Intel HD switchable graphics. But I've found a model called a tm2-2057sb (small business) that just has the i3 and Intel HD graphics. This adds up as well as from what I've read the HDMI port doesn't work without dedicated graphics in windows 10 but it works fine on mine Ah well, now I know and

    Although I've said one's interest in any flat car is proportional to the loads it's carrying, even an empty drop-centre flat car with its curved side beams is inherently more striking. Since such a flat car is designed to haul over-sized cargo it's important to load it with something more than just a very large crate. Something like this steam hammer that may still be functional but has seen better days.

    Rob- Discovered that the Simple Scatter Plugin allows the user to fill various shapes using a drop down menu. We were puzzled why some of the leaves dropped through when we were filling a circle. Excellent that anything can be filled!

    Hi, Olivier! A:M is much faster today, largely because we have faster CPUs and more available RAM and A:M has been optimized in recent versions to take advantage of the advances in these. The benchmark scene that took 20 minutes to render on the computer I had in 2009 takes only 2 minutes on the computer I have now, which is still about four years old. Also, NetRender is now included in A:M so you can take advantage of multiple cores on one computer or across your home network when you are rendering more than one frame. A:M does not devote more than one core to a single frame nor does it use GPU-computation. Not yet anyway. A:M will be slower at rendering than some other programs. That is not a deal-breaker for me because A:M is better for me at modeling and animating. Do i want to give up the better modeling and animating environment i get with A:M just to have faster rendering? No! (en français!) Rendering is something the computer can do while I'm doing something else. Modeling and animating is something I have to do at the computer no matter what program I use so it is better to use the program that is better at that. That is why i use A:M. If you have more questions, do ask!

    Hi Guys, I'm happy to share an animation I've been working on the past few months, I'll try to make a long story short... Since all this Covid 19 stuff things have been different, previously most of my spare time was spent working on fine art projects a lot of work I did preparing for art shows was put on hold and like many people it's been a stressful time. I guess psychologically the best way I've been able to deal with it has been to tap into my silly side and rekindle some of the things that inspired me in my younger years. Using Animation Master was one of those things, it was the first app that got me seriously into 3D and actually helped land me my first job out of college. I made a friend on this forum over 20 years ago (Bud) Mike Lium, we eventually lost touch and reconnected on Facebook even though I wasn't using A:M much or posted 3d stuff he was always a friend... always encouraged me and my art. These past couple months while working on this animation I couldn't wait to surprise him with it. Sadly I didn't finish it in time, and found out he passed away a few weeks ago.     When boning a long tail or neck it seems intuitive to match the bone joint to the spline ring. However, you'll probably get a more natural deformation if the spline ring is in the middle of the bone. PRJ you can play with... TailTest01.prj The top is spline-ring-at-the-joint.     Here it is 10 days later and work has been full blown. In fact, I just stopped working about 1 hour ago. So i thought it was time to back with the new guy. Here is a shot of the render front and side. I have done some polishing of the mesh. and started rigging just a few minutes ago.

    I guess, "likes" are not quite back. We have "Thanks" and "Ha-ha" but no simple "like" yet. I guess we'll have to express our likes in written form! For your consideration, these emoticons continue to be available (you have to scroll way down the emoticon menu)...

    An Onion Skin toolbar has been added to A:M so that you don't have to return to the Options>Onion Skin panel whenever you need to change the most commonly used settings. To enable the Onion Skin Toolbar go to Tools>Customize>Toolbars and check "Onion Skin" The Toolbar has five controls Onion Skin Mode ON/OFF (default keyboard shortcut: SHIFT+5) Keyframe Mode ON/OFF. ON shows only onion skins at the time of keyframes of the currently selected object*&^. OFF shows onion skins in normal time increments (every frame if Step is set to 1) (a keyboard shortcut for this can be defined in Tools>Customize>Keyboard "Onion Toggle Mode") increase/decrease onion skins drawn Before current time. increase/decrease onion skins drawn After current time increase/decrease Step. Step is an increment between drawn onion skins. Larger numbers skip more frames before drawing another onion skin Like all toolbars, Onion Skin can be dragged to any convenient location. In this view, with Keyframe Mode ON, A:M draws one keyframed pose of the character before the current time and two keyframed poses after. (The model with the white wireframe lines is at the current time) With Keyframe Mode OFF Onion Skin draws in regular frame increments, observing the specified limits of one before and two after... In this view, Step has been increased to 4. A:M draws onion skins in 4-frame increments... Note that keyframe filters have an effect on what A:M regards as a keyframe for this purpose. If you had only the "Key Rotation" filter enabled while Onion skin was ON and in Keyframe Mode, it would only consider keyframes that contained Rotation keys for drawing onion skins and ignore any that had only Translation or Scaling keys.
