A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Howdy from Tucson, As I'm creating lip poses to be used in lip sync animation, I find it difficult to hide certain control points. Perhaps, as I'm a newbie, is there an "Eye" icon feature to hide/unhide groups as you are editing? Right now, I have a "tongue" and "teeth" groups I'd like to hide while manipulating the lip without accidently hitting a tooth. Any suggestions? Thanks! ...doobie angorabell.wordpress.com

I thought I read somewhere that this was possible, but now I can't find it. I want to swap the selection... unselect the current selection, but select the current unselected CPs. An alternative would be a way to add the current selected CPs to the hidden CPs (as opposed to adding the unselected CPs with Shift-H). I can select the "other" CPs and do a Shift-H, but it's a lot more work, and I'll be doing this a lot as I attach decals to surfaces of a somewhat crude NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race car. (It'll be whizzing around a race track, so it doesn't need to be perfect.) Here, I've hidden most everything other than the right side of the truck, and I've cli…

Hi, I've installed the 2008 Skeletal Rig into one of my characters (as best as I could). However, it's a really complex rig with lots of constraints and other things going on with it. Other than the install instructions, are there any other instructions, or tutorials on how to use it properly? Other than that, is that the most up to date character rig publicly available for AM? Thanks! Tommy

Okay you know this stuff already right? Because I'm a big fan of Right Clicking I sometimes forget about the ease of double clicking in the Project Workspace and use alternative ways that often add a few extra steps. The primary exception to the rule in double clicking in the Project Workspace is the top container (Project). As you are already in a project double clicking won't create a new project. In fact it won't do anything. When clicking on Image, A:M will prompt you to open an image. The same goes for double clicking on Sound. A:M will prompt us to load a audio file. Double clicking on a Material will create a new (default) material, ready and waiti…

One of the easiest ways to combine Choreographies is to create a third (empty) Chor and import the others into it. As a cautionary note, saving that Chor will result in one that is truly merged and combined so make sure you save your originals. For realtime organization and planning of Projects consider creating Choreographies with themes. For instance you might have one Chor named 'Characters' that has all of the actors needed in a particular storyline. Similarly, a Chor named 'Props' can be populated with all manner of props. As you need these resources simply drag and drop from the Character Chor into the active Chor you have set up for with a camera for that s…

Hello, I just requested a trial of Animation Master and, while I wait to see if I'm approved or declined, I was wanting to look at some of what is being done with the software these days. Most of what I've found online seems to be older stuff from upwards of 10 years ago. I know the program has improved a lot since then from reading the info on the website, so I was curious to see some current work created with it? So, show off your stuff! Let's see what this can do! Thanks

Anyone know how to cure the effect of an object spinning with increasing speed until it looks like its going in reverse? Like movies of propellers and wheels. Other than just slowing it down to a crawl. Had tried to come up with a way of making the chain advance along a path using expressions but just animated the chain & sprockets separately. Thanks in advance. Sprocket01.avi

Over the transom... Each of those is a deep topic, but.... CP weighting allows you to apportion the influence of more than one bone to a CP, rather than having it rigidly attached to just one bone. This is useful for the stretches and shrinks that surfaces between bones do, such as at the elbow or knee. Fan bones are another way of creating that in-between behavior, but slightly different outcomes than CP weighting. At the Sept 26, 2020 Live Answer Time I showed several comparisons of fan-boning and CP weighting. We talked abut rigging and CP weighting quite a bit last year at LAT. Several of those might be worth watching. my tutorials…

So I wanted to use a bone connected to a simple model to cut a hole through the side of a vehicle that has a Darksim Material on it. 1. I went to the "Boolean" bone's properties and turned "Boolean Cutter" to "ON." 2. I did both final renders and progressive renders and the boolean doesn't seem to work. Did I forget a necessary step......or might some misfortune have happened to A:M's boolean function?? Detbear

Hi, I'm interested in getting into Animation Master, I have very little experience with modelling software (only Sketchup) but would like to use Animation Master for some top down game dev. I'm working on a top down game with pre rendered graphics, but so far I've only used pre made sprites, which I want to replace with my own. I'm working on a MacBook though and was wondering if this OS is still supported? And maybe there are some people who can give me some tips at the same time on how to start. That'd actually be great. So far what I've seen the software looks intuitive, which is actually what I'm looking for.

Don't know if anyone wants to look into this but when trying to copy two of these groups (Cap1 & Cap2) by selecting the group in the project list AM crashes, but if you select with a box then they copy with no problem. I had to make 36 of these assemblies for the Wright Bros. flyer one-at-a-time until I tried this work-around. Just FYI TestCap.prj

Darrin Mossor has some really excellent tutorials on his website. There are several subject that I thought I would like to do a tutorial on but Darrin says it better than I ever could. Some of the information might seem a little outdated (most created in 2002) but they are must read tutorials. For instance: Layers Tutorial by Darrin Mossor Other tutorials can be found here: http://www.mossor.org/Desktop/index.html These tutorials include: - Writing with Sprites - The Duplicator Wizard -or- 5 minute instant DNA - Walking a Centipede Along a Path -or- Building Complex Animations from Simple Pieces - Footsteps in the Snow (using Animated Dis…

Hi I just can't get through the manuals - it's not my best way of learning, and the software I have doesn't really match what's in the manual - and i want to do stuff not covered in the manual. The best way for me to learn is to spend time with an expert. If there's an Animation Master Master in the UK, ideally within the Thames Valley, that would be prepared to help with questions and take me through what i want to do and answer the questions I have, I'd really really really appreciate it. Please email me neil@fairbrother.net Thanks and best regards Neil

I'm attempting to do a sort of "shoot 'em up" type of animation, and the more I play with A:M the more I realize there's tons of stuff I still need to learn. Anyway, there are several things I'm having problems with. Firstly, I'm trying to do a muzzle flash when a gun is fired. I was reading on the the special effects page on the Killer Bean website, and he said he did muzzle flash by modeling a vaguely conical shape, making it glow, etc, then scaling it up and down in (I assume) the choreography. I thought it might be easier to just put the muzzle flash on the model of the gun, and make an action that scaled it up and caused the gun to recoil (because then one would…

Hi, all. I'm trying to rig up a simple contraption, where I just need to move one hinged lever, and it has a knock on effect moving all the other attached bits (see WMV file for what I'm doing). I've got it working, but I can't believe it needs to be as complicated as it is. Do I really need so many bones? The JPEG shows the bones and their constraints. I just move Bone1 and everything else works from that. Bone3 has a kinematic chain to Bone2. Bone6 has a kinematic chain to Bone5. Any critique of my method most welcome... action.wmv

Does anyone know if there will be an update with Animation Master V11.1, A friend of mine loaned me his Radeon X1900 XT so I can see if it is worth the expensive price for it and when running AM on the card it looks kinda funky. The Workspace looks like it is in 8 bit 16 color mode. No matter what I do it just looks weird. I've downloaded the latest catalyst drivers and the one it came with and still no change. Is this something that ATI needs to correct or Hash? Any information on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

I have set-up a material Library for texturing the objects in "Tin Woodsman of Oz". If you would like to help get all of these objects for the movie textured, I could really use your help! All you have to do is drag and drop materials from a library onto groups in models, and then tweak the parameters on the material shortcut. It is just a matter of choosing an appropriate material and tweaking the color, basically. This is a good opportunity to learn and to contribute to making the things ready to render. If you are interested, send me an email and I will point you to where to get started. Thanks,

Hello again, I have extracted some models and textures out of one of my favorite video games. They were in .tri format. I converted them to .3ds, .lwa or .obj. The textures to them when theyre converted dont stick as they are supposed to (my fault on programming). So they end up as .dds (direct draw image) All the UV map coordinates are in that dds file and should just lay right on but some how they dont in 3ds max. Now for .obj When i attach textures to the model then convert it to .obj, it leaves a .mtl file with it. It contains all the texture information and material stuff and jazz like that. Now for my question, is .dds or .obj supported in A:M. If …

I attempted my first bird flock yesterday. Ten birds flew right to left for four seconds. All was well. After that, things went steadily down hill. I have a few questions: [1] The Area of Influence. I can shrink the yellow circle, but the birds stay where they originally appeared. [2] Is is possible to string the birds out in more of a line, instead of a sphere? [3] I re-opened the original doc. that performed well, and added birds [for a total of 30] and extended the time to 18 sec. The birds performed normally for the first four sec. and then flapped wildly like sparrows. [They are seagull types]. I struggled for the rest of the evening trying to find a sett…

I want crosshairs that have a zoom in component to my chor, or action/chor. How can I achieve this feat? specifically, the cross hairs are fine, it is the aiming ring I want to resize during the chor/action. It would be even slicker for the aiming ring to maintain its' width, while shrinking down in size, but I'm not that picky.
