Nice redo on that one John. :)

The still image makes his arms/hands look a little out of whach but the animation reads fine.

Are you able to email your exercises to me?

While 'Putfile' is a great place to share video on the cheap I can't seem to even get a screen capture of the video window to grab the images for use in your certificate.

Looks like you're set to be first to get the new certificate too. :)

Hi;

Iv'e been using A.M. for about 18 months now and never got round to doing the tutorials for certification, but its time to show I can do the basics... I did find some errors when posing the new 04KeeKat, it seemed to have the eyes bleed through the eyelids when squinted and now he seems to be a bit crosseyed.. heres my render with some extra posing ... He looks a bit psycho  ?

I have a question. Are there any plugins I can get for A:M that will allow me to save a single frame in the JPG file format?

Exercise: #1 You're the Director

Date Completed: December 26th, 2006

Instructor: Rodney and the spiffy new book that came with my upgrade :D

Comments: Where it all begins. I'm going to try putting that little extra something into these projects. For this one, that's just a new camera angle and light placement.

Exercise Completed: #1: You're the Director

Date Completed: Jan 2, 2007

Instructor: none

Remarks: Like several of you I've been playing with A:M for a couple of years and I just ordered 2007 so I suppose it's now time to march through the exercises. I had to tame keekat's right foot but have since found out there is a corrected version of the guy. I hope I don't get points deducted for using a defective kitty :P

Jeremiah,

Keekat (the one with the bad foot not the athletic one) says... "you gonna pay for that remark".

Great to have you with us *online* in 2007! :)

(I like the color combination. Keekat looks great against it.)

And a very belated welcome to Dion Kirfman!

Yikes, good point... thanks for the warning... I ain't 'fraid of a kitty but I better watch what I say about "crazy legs" (the "other" knight)

Great to have you posting your exercises with us Pip.

The video tutorials and related TaoA:M resources are becoming more and more accessible these days. With the update of Hash Inc website in progress most of the exercises will soon be available by direct link there.

For peer review and feedback posting here is definitely the thing to do.

As an extension of Exercise 1 you'll find a host of other characters on your A:M CD/Extra DVD to direct/animate too.

Excercise Completed: Excercise 1 You're the Director

Date Completed: 1-27-07

Instructor: None

Remarks: I bought Animation Master Last Summer, and now I am finally starting to take animation seriously. After some computer troubles, I am ready to start over. I only lost the first few excercises, but the practice will do me some good. As for this excersise, I guess I made it into an animation because I looked around in the forums and saw some that were animated. The first time I did this excercise moving the camera was a big issue for me, but I figured it out. Animation Master is very different from Maya and Houdini, which I have used at S.C.A.D. (Savannah College of Art and Design) which I graduated with a BFA in computer art. I can't wait until I can start making my own stuff in this program!

It wouldn't let me attach an AVI, so I rendered a still picture. Enjoy!

Steven,

Its great to have you back... and graduated even!

As far as uploading movies are concerned I cannot stress enough (but need to find a better place to announce it) that the 'safe' format for the forum is MOV format with Sorenson 3 compression.

You can render Sorenson 3 MOV straight out of A:M and I've yet to see anyone say that hasn't worked for them.

An added benefit is that others won't have to track down strange codecs and install them in order to see your movies and provide feedback. Outside of the TaoA:M forum the codec wars still rage.

Welcome, Jonathan! That's really great that you are getting some credits for learning A:M! It really is a fantastic program. I'm still a n00b myself. I only finished the exercises a few weeks ago and now I've started the Animation Boot Camp. I have to say the interface is really user friendly considering how complex animation really is! Sure, I've got a long way to go, but it's been a lot of fun. I hope that you enjoy your journey as well.

One of the most excellent takes on Exercise 1 seen to date!

That's a great angle - he's really bi-i-i-g!

Ah, but is Keekat really big or is Thom and the cameraman really really small.

One of life's puzzling little mysteries we may never ever know. ;)

Secret revealed!

Ah but you are still keeping your secrets from us.

WHAT IF you've scaled the camera down?

Maybe you faked the RULERS!!!

Cannot fool me... I'm on to you! :P

My point to all this (assuming there is one) is the role that scale has in composition.

The end result, what the viewer sees, is what really matters.

Sometimes, especially without other visual cues, scale can be misinterpreted.

Most viewers assume that camera view is from their eye level.

That (and a really small Thom) sells the effect for you.

He looks/looked like a HUGE Keekat to me!

Edit: Hmmm... I now see that Keekat is only 180cm tall with hair! :D

Some giant!

Shhh.... Don't let him hear you say that!

Its great to have you certifyin'! :)

Folks,

When groups of people work through these exercises together its guaranteed to be a lot of fun.

So, what are you waiting for?

Now is the perfect time to climb aboard.

Remarks: After finishing my last project I thought it was time to update the software. That was v8.5. So after the v13.r install I noticed a few changes. Thats a bit of a joke, my jaw still isn't right from when it hit the floor. Don't those folks from Hash ever sleep? This is a giant leap from what I have seen so far. Anyway this looked like a great way to grab a working foundation for some of the changes since my last upgrade. Thank you for the stage to learn!!!

Jim,

You said a lot there!

The changes from v8.5 to v13 are unbelievable.

They have to be experienced.

The practice of stitching splines in a modeling window makes a big difference.

Add to that Layers and Post Effect and Hair.

New rendering options, graphics formats... on and on and on.

I get a sense of pride when I talk to any A:M User no matter what the version.

v8.5 p++ is still one of my favorites and it can still be used today to make movies!

But I could never go back (last year I tried!).

It was a lot of fun but I missed stitching! :P

Upgrading... WOW... What a difference a few years make.

Not only do get the latest and greatest in A:M technology but you get to tell Hash Inc thanks for the memories.

Congratulations on moving into v13 and welcome to TaoA:M! :)

(BTW - Your link didn't work for me... I'll try again later!)
