This picture of pws shows the same material applied to three balls. one as just color. two as just displacement. three with same material applied twice once as color and once as diplacement
ball one on left ball two on right ball three in front

end of tut for materials
Any material applied or decal applied can be use to make bump/displacement setting on a model by changing the type of decal or adjusting the material settings think white up black down.
made another 1.98 model this time of a rabbit and did a quick action combined with some chor action which I recorded with a black background with the alpha buffer turned on to get a series of tgas
use the series as the sprite image
this is the results ...

Not really great but at least the animated sprites worked
Eric you set the pose parameters in the action area the relation for the pose will show up in the action area of the pws and thats where you made the adjustments

Very Nice
I like playing with animated texture just remember you can do that directly in AM
I threw this together animating the texture and dispacement right in AM

another 1.98 project ...found out I will be working new shift next week so I should have more AM time
below the two arrows in the modeling window are two symbols the one removes the spline the other releases a spline from a connection and then hitting delete will erase it
did this quick idea...you can use an animated displacement map and or material
I did a quick one here using the gradient combiner and the extended grid combiner with a pose

I thought about this when I posted my first tutorial on johnl3d.blogspot.com I used a pose without explaining how... so I guess that should be my next tutorial. I find creating a pose to do an effect very useful . In this example to show what I mean I have a rough egg shape change color then disappear..go transparent.. I set this up with two simple poses..which are set up in the action window where you set up a new pose. I could have made an action but that would require more work and more setup in the end. Here I imported the same model into the chor and scaled it so each fit inside the other then simply move the pose over time for each one ...pose 1 to change the color over 15 frames then pose 2 to to cause the disappearance in turn for each one. It was easy and I could complete control for example I could have done both poses together or in different combinations to increase the effect.
