Use the "legacy bump", it seems to get rid of the problem, though you'll need to up the percentage. I guess there's still issues with bump and displacement maps, I thought that got fixed.
I use gradient materials with the attributes set to bitmap plus. You can also set the attributes to turb combiners and have their attributes set to bitmap plus. It works pretty well.
You could also use multiple stamps and texture sections at a time.
Technically, you can turn OFF the smartskin with a pose, but it causes the slider to do funny things. That's why I didn't add it in the first place. I never found a solution to the problem.
The ground will need to be set to flat shaded or the diffuse falloff set higher. It may need to be animated since there is a transition back and forth between backgrounds.
The AO render looks fantastic. It adds alot of depth to it. It's a great sequence either way.

I'm glad not everyone felt this way.
These times don't sound too bad to me.
Part of the reason for this community project was to have animation rendered with AO. If jenpy's "fake AO" was available, I would have used that instead, but it wasn't.
Steffen has a plugin that can create a spiral called "Primitive". V16 comes with it or you can DL it from his website. The plugin does alot more that just spirals.
