This is just a ultra simple look at what the Repeat and Seamless settings do for images in A:M. Note that the default setting for images is to Repeat only once so the Seamless setting doesn't do much with that. Once there are two more more images repeating however then the Seamless setting will flip the images so that the textures/images match up for seamless tiling. In this way you could use A:M to perfect seamless textures but of course there are other paint programs out there that are designed specifically to do that. http://www.screencast.com/t/Ol1FdmJ3ym

Here's a mostly undocumented feature in v17 that will be primarily of use to folks that login to the A:M Community. It can be useful for schools and small studios who want to deliver custom content and information into the A:M Community tabs. The Support tab in the A:M Community can be replaced simply by dropping an html file named 'Support.html' into the root folder where A:M was installed. For instance, if A:M installed to C:\Program Files\Hash Inc\v17 any html file named 'Support.html' found there will show up in the Support tab instead of the default support page. Fuchur designed a beautiful page to illustrate the possibilities with customizating the supp…

Hello Everyone, I know that new videos on amfilms.hash.com do not play for some reason. I do not know the reason at this time but I will soon. But it will not be till Monday 03/04/13 till I can take more of a look at it. Since we are packing right now for ECC. I have also been slacking on working on the old films site but when I return I'm going to have another go at it. It is just one of those projects every time you try to get into it. There is either something better to do or something you can make more head way at. But I know it would be good to get it running. We were also taking about adding re-links from amfilms.hash.com to vintagefilms.hash.com to fix some ol…

You can now upload the videos and they should play like they use to. After the 'hack' I did an update and reinstall when we first got the software it was not working so I had clip-share log in and fix it. They never told me what they did and if an update would break it. Well it ends up the update did break it the use "-vop" not more supported "-vf" so it's fixed and if there is an update again I will remember to check that. Now I just need to get the YouTube uploader installed again and that will be done and I can get back to vintagefilms. I sent a email to the people that lost videos in this since the master was lost too.

I see we've had a visit from a spamer this morning, one myrakern279. Not that we get many here but could there be a "button" on the forum pages to let users report a post as Spam. Should first time posters be allowed to include links? myrakern279's signature link is definitely of an adult nature!

The "Limit Max Drawing Time" option doesn't seem to work as intended in current versions of A:M but back in the days of slow computers and slow graphics cards this is what it looked like: LimitMaxDrawing_time_demo.mov In current versions of A:M, turn "Limit Max Drawing Time" OFF.

Thought this link might be of interest to folks who aren't familiar with the feature film the A:M Community put together a few years ago: http://wiki.hash.com/index.php/TWO_Index Sometimes it's a bit hard to navigate through the main wiki so the index page helps to zero in on specific areas of interest. A few random samplings: http://wiki.hash.com/index.php/Characters (The TWO cast of characters starts to shape up) http://wiki.hash.com/index.php/Contact_Sheets (Note: This was more of a test... to my knowledge contact sheets such as these were not used extensively during TWO) http://wiki.hash.com/index.php/Center_Of_Gravity (Some thoughts…

This image won't make much sense to anyone but I want to post it to remind me to delve into this area further. What it represents is a rapid workflow that didn't exist before v18 (the process could be done but not in its current form). The basic concept is this: Phase 1 Modeling - Create a simple shape/object (in this case a simple can) - Create a new Action of 5 or 6 frames in length (the number of frames really depends on what you want to produce. In this case I wanted to place a few cans in psuedo random fashion on/near an imaginary ground plane) - Turn Onion Skinning on (it's best to add this to your toolbar which you can do in v18... adjust the oni…

So there is something wrong with our camera. I ordered a new one today. But the one we took only took pictures right when the conditions were prefect(no motion, good light, more camera words). But the next show should be better. This relates to Tore's post on Scene lengths. Assuming a local variable isn't the cause... Can anyone tell me why this Chor Length defaults to 70? Recommended test: Open Project Crack open Chor (keyframe/dopesheet mode) in PWS Adjust Chor length to 50. Save Reopen I would expect the Chor length to adjust to the longest Chor Action (normal behavior) or stay at 50 (optimal). I can't see why it comes back as 70. If it doesn't open/stay at 70 for you then perhaps there is a local variable stored that is a root cause. Update: Just as I was posting I looked at the FPS of the Project and if set to another unit (say 24) that will result in a diff…

So I'm a bit behind one Support Email at this time. I got wrapped up in some other updates this weekend and did not get to it. I meant to get them done tonight but work killed me(just walked in the door). Tomorrow I'm going to sit down and get threw all the back emails and really try to stay on top of it more(back to checking every day). Thank You for understanding and sorry for the delays,

One of the things I enjoyed while in Japan was discovering books and magazine devoted to Animation:Master. I think I once told the (rather humorous) story about how my family was on vacation and my father in law and I stepped into a bookstore and because it turned out to be an 'adult' bookstore I didn't really find much of anything worth buying except a few random kids books but once back on the road he revealed he had purchased a video. Curious to see what he had purchased I inquired and immediately went into shock upon seeing the cover of the video... he'd purchased the Haruwo video by Shao Guee that I had a (small) part in subtitling/translating into English (I was …

Hey Everyone; I know I have said this before but I can now see light at the end of the tunnel. I have one more test for my job in the next few weeks, then a 2 month break. It does not look like work will slow down any time soon but I'm going to they to put more time Into Hash, Inc. Since the break from testing will free up some time. Here is what is on the list now. As it stands now fixing anything not critical on the web site side will be delayed until Hash, Inc. starts the new server move. What comes with the server move: New Store with everything but serial numbers imported AMStils and AMFilms will be moving to IP.Board I have not had time to test the move but it…

I was trying to remember this awhile back, but I just had it happen to me and wanted to put it out here for other people. If you find your choreography suddenly takes forever to render (if in fact, it will ever render) and it starts adding up to tens of hours or days or something, one thing that can cause this is having an environment map missing from the choreography's Image Based Lighting. I used to use them all of the time and would run into this. Anyway, just wanted to put it down before my feeble brain forgets it again. :-)

You probably have noticed that Z-buffered Kleig light soft shadows (most of what we use) are not rendering soft. Shadow cast on Ground Plane... However, it turns out that models can shadow themselves correctly. So... Use the Grid wizard to add a flat plane to your model and give it a bone that is independent from everything else in your model. In the Chor, constrain that bone to the Ground, then set the Ground to OFF. You can scale that bone to scale the plane to be as large as you need. Shadow cast on plane that is part of model... Of course this won't work when you have more than one model in a chor. For t…

I just updated to the latest Mac OS and wanted to let the Mac A:M users know what to expect. As expected, A:M is NOT really usable in Mojave. Many things still seem to work, but the primary problem is that the Project Workspace is unclickable. It's responsive in that selecting something in a model window or choreography will highlight the specific element in the PWS, but no amount of clicking on it will allow you to select it or interact with it via the PWS. Fortunately, the menus and item specific pop-up menus are still functional. Most of the other windows do seem to function: Timeline, Properties, Poses, etc. Some of the tool panels are also unclickable. …

Trying to finish off the Learning curve, using V18g in OSX 10.85. Made some modifications to one of the models, saved it as an iteration. Looked ok visually so tried to test it it as a render using the action window previously worked in. When I tried to do a quick render, the process seemed to stall, with the message appearing, "calculating the visible patches". That went on for some minutes and eventually aborted that render. Tried again, the render crashed the program. Opened up again, same project, same settings, same problem with calculating the visible patches. Went out to do some food shopping and leave it to get on with it. Ju…

We were talking about overlapping motion in DavidDenzill's recent thread. This PRJ lets you experiment with overlapping motion and quickly see the result. HeadBanger03.prj open the PRJ open Action2 and look at it from a side view. I have keyframed the two extremes of a head-banging motion on Rabbit... up-down-up-down-up-down... play it! It's motion but it's stiff! Next, grab the keyframes for Head and Neck and slide them a couple frames later. (Hold down the SHIFT key and drag a bounding box around the keyframes you want to move.) play it! Suddenly, what was stiff is now flexible! Try three frames... four... five.…

Attached are the pictures of six different discs I have acquired over the years. I did not know if anyone wanted them for posterity, if nothing else. Each is kind of a snapshot-in-time and a walk-down-memory-lane, depending on how long you have been around. I am not asking much, if anything beyond shipping. They should not be above $7 to ship if you are in the U.S. If there is any interest, email me at fdputhuff@gmail.com Thumper

I have a suggestion for making the grid line display more useful (IMHO) if Steffen can manage it. Here is a typical grid setup for me; grid lines every 1/16" with a highlight line at each inch. Another typical grid for me is lines every inch with a highlight every foot. If I zoom out from this screen mag, at some point AM decides that the smaller grid squares can't be resolved on my monitor and whole grid is turned off. It would be useful if only the small grid was turned off while the highlighted lines remained. If you continue to zoom out, eventually the large grid also turns off.

I've finally replaced my 10+ year old computer with something more up to date. It runs A:M just fine and solves two minor but annoying problems A:M had with my old hardware. But now I can't turn off spline anti-aliasing. Checking the "Antialias Lines" box has no effect. I've set the Radeon software Anti-Aliasing switch to "Use application settings". This isn't even close to being a real problem and I'll probably get used to it with time but Steffen might want to look into it. Maybe it's a symptom of other driver issues or maybe I'm just missing something.

I've discovered a progressive render issue in v19.0p. While it's not a show stopper it's been annoying me for a long time and I've finally found the root cause. This image is an overview of the test chor. There's a camera with a 1000mm lens looking at five instances of a grey reference sphere, each at a different distance from the camera. The sphere instances are scaled in the chor as they get closer to the camera so that from the camera view they don't change too much in image size. They are positioned so the camera can see all five spheres side by side. Between the camera and the closest sphere is a slightly tinted, four patch plane that is a "glass sheet" with a t…

Steve @Shelton and I looked at an interesting problem a few days ago. Steve had rigged a new character of his and was SmartSkinning several joints when he realized he had been doing the SmartSkins on control bones, not geometry bones. Why is that undesirable? Well... control bones are created to consolidate the manipulation of multiple (geometry) bones into one (control) bone. For ease of animating. In the case shown below, TSM has two geometry bones in an upper arm. the first swings around to move the arm forward/back/up down while the second only rotates on its long axis to handle the twisting of the upper arm. this helps mimic the motion of the skin on the up…
