Trying to finish off the Learning curve, using V18g in OSX 10.85. Made some modifications to one of the models, saved it as an iteration. Looked ok visually so tried to test it it as a render using the action window previously worked in. When I tried to do a quick render, the process seemed to stall, with the message appearing, "calculating the visible patches". That went on for some minutes and eventually aborted that render. Tried again, the render crashed the program. Opened up again, same project, same settings, same problem with calculating the visible patches. Went out to do some food shopping and leave it to get on with it. Ju…

We were talking about overlapping motion in DavidDenzill's recent thread. This PRJ lets you experiment with overlapping motion and quickly see the result. HeadBanger03.prj open the PRJ open Action2 and look at it from a side view. I have keyframed the two extremes of a head-banging motion on Rabbit... up-down-up-down-up-down... play it! It's motion but it's stiff! Next, grab the keyframes for Head and Neck and slide them a couple frames later. (Hold down the SHIFT key and drag a bounding box around the keyframes you want to move.) play it! Suddenly, what was stiff is now flexible! Try three frames... four... five.…

Attached are the pictures of six different discs I have acquired over the years. I did not know if anyone wanted them for posterity, if nothing else. Each is kind of a snapshot-in-time and a walk-down-memory-lane, depending on how long you have been around. I am not asking much, if anything beyond shipping. They should not be above $7 to ship if you are in the U.S. If there is any interest, email me at fdputhuff@gmail.com Thumper

I have a suggestion for making the grid line display more useful (IMHO) if Steffen can manage it. Here is a typical grid setup for me; grid lines every 1/16" with a highlight line at each inch. Another typical grid for me is lines every inch with a highlight every foot. If I zoom out from this screen mag, at some point AM decides that the smaller grid squares can't be resolved on my monitor and whole grid is turned off. It would be useful if only the small grid was turned off while the highlighted lines remained. If you continue to zoom out, eventually the large grid also turns off.

I've finally replaced my 10+ year old computer with something more up to date. It runs A:M just fine and solves two minor but annoying problems A:M had with my old hardware. But now I can't turn off spline anti-aliasing. Checking the "Antialias Lines" box has no effect. I've set the Radeon software Anti-Aliasing switch to "Use application settings". This isn't even close to being a real problem and I'll probably get used to it with time but Steffen might want to look into it. Maybe it's a symptom of other driver issues or maybe I'm just missing something.

I've discovered a progressive render issue in v19.0p. While it's not a show stopper it's been annoying me for a long time and I've finally found the root cause. This image is an overview of the test chor. There's a camera with a 1000mm lens looking at five instances of a grey reference sphere, each at a different distance from the camera. The sphere instances are scaled in the chor as they get closer to the camera so that from the camera view they don't change too much in image size. They are positioned so the camera can see all five spheres side by side. Between the camera and the closest sphere is a slightly tinted, four patch plane that is a "glass sheet" with a t…

The "tongue sandwich" is a classic cartoon gag but I had never seen a real tongue sandwich until I went to New York City and my New York City friend Dean took me to the world famous 2nd Ave Deli where I ordered... the tongue sandwich! For Dean's recent birthday I made this remembrance of the occasion... It was good but it was probably my first and last tongue sandwich. I looked up the current price of a tongue sandwich at the 2nd Ave Deli... $27.95! Oy!

Steve @Shelton and I looked at an interesting problem a few days ago. Steve had rigged a new character of his and was SmartSkinning several joints when he realized he had been doing the SmartSkins on control bones, not geometry bones. Why is that undesirable? Well... control bones are created to consolidate the manipulation of multiple (geometry) bones into one (control) bone. For ease of animating. In the case shown below, TSM has two geometry bones in an upper arm. the first swings around to move the arm forward/back/up down while the second only rotates on its long axis to handle the twisting of the upper arm. this helps mimic the motion of the skin on the up…

I put a bump map on this model to simulate some wrinkles on the top, but although both top patches have their normals facing out, one patch shows the inverse bump result of the other... Just to try it, I did RMB>Renumber CPs... That fixed it! Don't know why, don't know how, but that did fix it.

Here is another modern render of one of my old Animation Showdown animations. I added a school gymnasium set and rendered with radiosity. A birdseye view of the chor looks like this. The set is a completely enclosed box with two kleig lights in the ceiling... A conventional render with those two lights gets this... That is very severe. If I were going to use conventional lighting I would need add a number of fill lights in strategic places. Here is a radiosity render. The shadow areas are no longer pitch black and there is visible detail even where the lights do not directly shine. Overall, …
