I was lathing a shape and thought I could easily turn it into a giraffe's head... A few hours later this dragon thingy appeared: The motion blur... a bit thick no? I thought I'd be lazy and make the eyelids be patch images that turn on/off. That was probably more work than it should have been if I would have just made actual eyelids. It kinda worked though. Had fun with a few things that won't be particularly apparent such as having the color of the horns change so that the lightest/grayest horn is always in the back (presumably aiding in giving a sense of depth). This guy technically has no mouth although he does have a jaw bone. He real…

The MuhHair and Kajiya-Kay plugin shaders work to make Particle Hair look better by re-shaping the Diffuse and Specular response of their surfaces. Kajiya-Kay is the easier one since it has no parameters of its own, it's just ON or not. However, unlike MuhHair, that lets you fine-tune the placement of highlights on the hair, Kajiya-Kay requires you to carefully place your specular light source... as you would in real life lighting. Here is hair with no extra shader and Specular Intensity 0 in the surface properties. Same hair, but with Specular Intensity greater than 0. The renderer seems to regard the hair as one simple mass and paints the spe…

@fraizer writes... -I recall the chor problem (fixed in a later version I recall) but it's exceedingly rare that I ever save work as a chor. I always work with a PRJ that has everything embedded. -I'd have to see the path circumstances to guess at the path problem. -If you are on an annual subscription your license should allow you to also install/run v19.0 which still has a Mac version. Try that and see if the .pre setting are more comprehensive. We have Live Answer Time at Noon CDT tomorrow if you would like to look at this in real time.

I want to add some information related to Netrenders Event Commands that allow us to run batch files and programs after a job completion (or frame completion). This process can allow use of other programs to post process output from Animation:Master's Netrender and help us understand how we can do the same basic process without Netrender as well. There are three basic components of this process: 1. Set up the Event Command in Netrender 2. (Optionally) structure a (textual) batch file to take arguments from Netrender and pass them on to other programs 3. Run the desired programs and processes This does assume a basic understanding of r…

Rob had come up with a cool way to make clouds very realistically tumble in the sky the way real clouds do. My question is, is it possible to create an animation whereby realistic looking clouds take the shape of something recognizable (like the profile of an animal.. a horse? ) and then tumble back into a wispy shape.... I myself am unaware how the clouds would be able to take the necessary shape but maybe someone else does? Tom

Hey You Guys, I need to export a short obj sequence. There was a way in the past, but I seem to have forgotten how. I exported each frame as an obj, but every obj has the same mesh shape. There are no differences. So I need to figure out how to export a short animation with each frame as a seperate obj. Anyone know how this is done? Thanks, Detbear

Here is another modern render of one of my old Animation Showdown animations. I added a school gymnasium set and rendered with radiosity. A birdseye view of the chor looks like this. The set is a completely enclosed box with two kleig lights in the ceiling... A conventional render with those two lights gets this... That is very severe. If I were going to use conventional lighting I would need add a number of fill lights in strategic places. Here is a radiosity render. The shadow areas are no longer pitch black and there is visible detail even where the lights do not directly shine. Overall, …

Trying to get the hair emitter to taper the thickness over the length of the hair to a point. What am I doing wrong (again)???? Also I must admit that I still don't know HOW to ask a question-start a topic? Could use some advice on that also. Any help appreciated.

I put a bump map on this model to simulate some wrinkles on the top, but although both top patches have their normals facing out, one patch shows the inverse bump result of the other... Just to try it, I did RMB>Renumber CPs... That fixed it! Don't know why, don't know how, but that did fix it.

Look at this fabulously flexible result of rigging a face with the Transfer_AW plugin. Steve @Shelton modeled this great character (right) and then we pulled out a lo-res version (left) with just enough splines to cover the essential landmarks of the face. We rigged and CP-weighted that with some minimal bones for the jaw and lip corners and then used Transfer_AW to interpolate that lo-res rig to the hi-res mesh. It would need some further fine-tuning but this is a huge time saver for rigging a face. TAW Hans.mp4

A forum member has posed this problem... LightSource.prj That is the correct behavior. Only ray-traced lights can accurately account for the shadowing created by boolean cutters. So, with the box as a boolean cutter, the sphere is completely "cut" and casts no shadow from the ray-traced light. The z-buffered light can not handle that complex situation, so even though the box cuts the sphere from the camera's view, the z-buffered light still sees it and a shadow is cast. Interesting way to get a shadow-only pass! I shall remember that!

Hey all. I have a design that needs to be printed onto paper. It is a pop up book. But I have never actually printed a template out from A:M. I have an idea as to how to approach it. But I didn't want to waste any time on a method that doesn't get the desired results. Main thing is that I need to print the same physical dimensions as exists on the model template. So if something on the model is say.....3.5 inches on the model, it needs to be 3.5 inches on the physical paper print out. Has anyone tackled a template printout from A:M??

Hey guys, I am currently using A:M mainly for 3d print modelling of spare parts or small "helpers" and so I wanted to show a couple of them to you and what I am up to. Some images are rendered from the 3d models created in A:M for printing others are just the resulting prints. It is not character modelling or printing (most of the time) but stuff that serve a real life purpose. Most are small, some are bigger and they are not "great" innovations in general but just sometimes pretty useful. Hope you like a couple of them. If you like to see time laps of the printing, etc., have a look here: https://www.patchwork3d.de/blog-5-en These are the cor…

I have not installed it on another computer. Please advise.

There was a lot of interest in the Cap Your Mo, Summer Mo-Cap Challenge! The most frequent question I got was, "Do I really have to show myself in the video?" "Why, of course!" For a very long time, one of the nice tools in A:M is being able to constrain cp motion along an axis during a rotate; see embedded project. This is a top view of two tubes whose axes are parallel to the Z axis. Open this project in v19p (or any version going back to the last century) and select the central circular 4pt. spline of the green tube. Select the Rotation tool and rotate the tool 45 deg. counterclockwise while holding down the 3 key. The spline rotates but the movement of the cp's are constrained to only move along the Z axis. Open this project in v19.5a and select the central circular 4 pt. spline of the red tube. …

Shown are three copies of the head of the Jungle Queen. Each head uses single attribute "skin" materials. The leftmost head material has subsurface scattering turned OFF while it's turned ON in the rightmost head. The centre head has subsurf. scat. turned OFF on it's right side while it's turned ON on it's left side. These three models are arranged in a chor that uses a single "sun" style light source and the global color (256, 256, 256) for ambient occlusion. With subsurf. scat. turned off in the camera, all three heads are screen rendered as expected with just sun, just ambient or both illuminating it. When subsurf. scat. is enabled in the camera and the only illum…

Something new is happening when I try to Zoom-RMB around an area. As shown in the screen capture, each time I hit Z and then depress the the screen reverts to the previous view but does result in zooming to the selected area. My current work around is to hold down the space bar (Refresh) before RMB. This issue seems to have started after AMD upgraded my drivers for the Radeon RXT 6700 XT. buggy_zoom.mp4

This issue may not be fixable if it's an unavoidable side effect of how AO works but I'll submit it anyway. Here is a prog. render of the test model illuminated by a sun type light source. The model is a flat grey surface above which hovers four glass windows. Each window model (7 in. x 7 in.; 17.8 x 17.8 cm) is 4x4 patches surrounded by a tubular frame. The greenish glass has a 90% transparency. Each window is floating a different distance above the grey surface ranging from 2 in (5.1 cm) to 1/2 in. (1.3 cm). This is a final render(9 passes) of the model after you turn on AO = 100% with a sky blue global colour. Notice that the ambient light is still bein…

So I got a new Shining 3D EinScan scanner and the models are much more complex, in the range of a million polys. Very smooth and detailed and orders of magnitude larger than my old scans with the Xbox Kinect. So I'm trying to load the 3D files (mostly scans of automotive parts I replicate) and it will initially load, say it's around 1.4 million polys and then go to 30% and never load. I've left it for over 3 hours and it never loads, but doesn't crash. What is the limitation of importing OBJ or STL files to AM from the plugins utility? Thanks!

Open the attached project in v19.5a. It has two versions of the same model. On the left in head_jungle_queen_v19pt5a_no_avg_normals.mdl, you can not change the normal weight of averaged normals because there is no "Average Normals" YES/NO switch in v19.5a. You can try changing the value of "Normal Weight" but it has no effect. On the right in head_jungle_queen_with_avg_normals_from v19p.mdl you can change the normal weight of averaged normals because this model was opened first in v19p and the "Average Normals" switch was set to YES. v19pt5a_no_avg_normals_embed.prj
