Darkwing Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Just to play around a little, I have decided to model a Mark II Viper from the remade BSG. My modeling skills suck (as can be seen here) but it's somewhat fun to model and there's no BSG models kicking around from what I can tell, so here's what I got so far: Quote
PurpleDingo Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 That's a frakkin' awesome start, man. Keep it up! Quote
Darkwing Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 one of my problems I continually have is notice on the wing how you can see each bend. Quote
higginsdj Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 No bevelling? I assume there won't be any closeups of this craft in the movie! Cheers Quote
Darkwing Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 no movie, just modeling. I'd bevel but I haven't got patience for it and I've never tried it. Quote
Darkwing Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 I re-built the wings and tried my best at the beveling thing. Now working on the basic structure for the third engine: Quote
Darkwing Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 those engines have some crapload of detail to model, very time consuming Quote
paradymx Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Those engines look great keep it up! Are you using the sweeper plugin for those? If not, an extra WOW! Quote
Darkwing Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 no, I have no idea what Sweeper is. Quote
Darkwing Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 here's some more shots Model is currently at 6708 patches Quote
pixelplucker Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Cool looking ship, I love the engines. Is there really a need for bevels? usually space scenes have one main light and sharp shadows, not sure how beneficial a bevel would be on edges unless the edges are substantially large. Quote
Darkwing Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 well, I've only put bevels on the wings cause those general get a fair bit of close up time like when it's in the hanger bay Quote
jason1025 Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 looks good. Close up shots will require some sort of beveled edge. Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 well, I been beveling the easy stuff, though it's very time consuming Quote
LeeAnderson Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Bevel or no bevel, it does look great! Your attention to detail so far has been really impressive--keep up the good work! Lee Quote
relser65 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 What scale are you using? (I decided to work on the Galactica... unless someone else has?) Anyone want to take on a Cylon Raider and a Raptor? http://blog.chriss-baumann.de/tag/battelstar-galactica/ for some images... Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 I was gonna try and work my way up, doing the mark VII next, then a raider, raptor, galactica, but there's no reason why two of us can't model the same thing Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 Not a huge progress report, but I've begun the under-carriage. I was gonna do the cockpit, but I think I'm avoiding it ATM Quote
Eric2575 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Chris, your modeling skills are really improving. Eric Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 thanks. I think a lot of it comes down to having the patience to do it. I have patience, but only to a certain degree. I think part of it is just me developing the patience to see this through Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 seeing as I haven't really posted any, here's the front view Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 Now is one of the tricky parts as I have no exact references, just fish eye views and angled pics, but I have begun work on the interior of the cockpit: Quote
relser65 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Now is one of the tricky parts as I have no exact references, just fish eye views and angled pics, but I have begun work on the interior of the cockpit: Found these on http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Viper_Mark_II Rob Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 those be the pics I've been using as my rotos and references, though I have a few more, a close-up of the engine, a different one of the cockpit Quote
Darkwing Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 here's what I'm at so far with the cockpit Quote
Darkwing Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 Here's the Viper with the ejection seat Quote
Darkwing Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 I have the side engines complete and just a few minor things left to the top engine Model is currently at 10,660 patches Quote
Darkwing Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 this shot essentially doesn't show anything new, it's just a different angle: Quote
jason1025 Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 keep at it. The last 10% is where 90% of the work will be done. But that's only true 50% of the time. Quote
Darkwing Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 um, 12%? I dunno *sweats and panics* I have only a little of the modeling left. I just have the rest of the interior of the cockpit to model and then these side things on the fuselage, but I'm kinda stuck on those at the moment, the main problem is getting it to fit in with the mesh. Then it's texturing time Quote
Darkwing Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 I've begun throwing some colours on the areas that are complete (fuselage being the exception) but it's really beginning to look like a colonial viper! Quote
Darkwing Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 sed multi-pass for this render, decals are much sharper Quote
Darkwing Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 This is the stage I like, it's like the icing on the cake stage Quote
John Bigboote Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 There's some good-looking mechanical modeling going on there...you should do it a favor and render with ambient occlusion. Quote
Darkwing Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 i did one early on when I was starting. At that point it took about 45 minutes to render, wouldn't surprise me if it took 2 hours to render now. I'll do one when the ship is done Quote
Darkwing Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 the viper isn't quite done yet, but I felt like making a cool pic for them so here it is: Quote
Darkwing Posted March 31, 2010 Author Posted March 31, 2010 Here's that AO render. Took 2 hours and 22 minutes at 42 passes Quote
Darkwing Posted April 1, 2010 Author Posted April 1, 2010 still a few minor things basically just in the cockpit, but it's essentially done. if i can find some high res images of what some of the decals look like on the ship, then I'll update the decals. In the meantime, I have uploaded the model to the resources section of the forum and can be found at the BSG Files Quote
