mtpeak2
I ran a little test, did you know you can smartskin a bone to control HAIR? I added a new smartskin to the bone, turned grooming mode on and groomed the hair at different angles. hair.mov
NancyGormezano
very terrific - great creative day you're having!
mtpeak2
Thanks Nancy. I knew you could groom hair in a pose, but not smartskin relationship.
itsjustme
KABLAAM!! Well, that's what it sounded like in my head. Thanks for sharing, Mark! That will definitely come in handy.
rusty
Guide splines can be animated!?! Had no idea. Used smart skin to move bones as well as CPs (no big deal). But Mirror Smart Skin wouldn't include the bones... wonder about hair. Wonder what would happen if the bone you smart skinned the hair to... had a dynamic constraint? And the image on the hair was an animation. And can you animate the frame numbers of that animation, tying them to the rotation of the... bone. Give the bone motion in an action to rock the dynamic constraint. Put this contraption in a flock with the action... Sorry... my brain got away from me for a second. :-)

Try it and let us know how it goes. -vern

mtpeak2
Ok, I spent too much time on this. Smartskin hair guides, tied length of hair to the Z scale of the same bone. Constrained that bone to a null with an aim at constraint, with scale to reach turned on. Then added a relationship to the Z rotation of the null to drive the thickness of the hair and finally, a relationship on the Y translation of the null to drive the color of the hair. So the null controls the whole animation. hair2.mov

Paul Forwood
Lots of fun and a very useful exercise. Now what are you going to tie to the x-translation?
mtpeak2
Well, I could tie the density, cull hairs, position, direction, kinkiness, kinkiness scale, bow, face camera or brightness to it or whatever else that can be animated. Zaryin
It's like discovering a new continent, haha! I know alot of people could use this for differing hairstyles and what not. Great find!

But serriously: Holy underwearjeepers, Batman, that's pretty cool Mark!
ruscular
This has great possibility! animate a person seeing a ghost with the hairs standing up, or make a porcupine with razor sharp hair standing up.
the_black_mage
cool! i could use that!
mtpeak2
The real potential is, the grooming tied to smartskin. Say you don't want to use hair dynamics, you could smartskin the head bone so hair doesn't penetrate the mesh.
AniMattor
...or you could use this to animate motion into the hair instead of using dynamics. Might give a little more control.
