Dragon Malificent made with A:M by Charles Babbage for Disney

Let us know when you have more cool "run through A:M" to show! -
That's a very successful conversion. WebGL is what makes that site possible.

Thanks for finding that!

Thanks, Nancy! Here is something I got going in v8 with the materials in the PRJ Nancy provided. This is something like the "wave" effect i remember from long ago. rippleframes.mov To get that i had to render every 15th frame out of 2 minutes of Chor time and then speed them up to 30fps in Quitcktime. It should be faster than that so there's still something about the settings I need to understand better.
-
Nancy can you post the original version of that PRJ, not resaved in v17?
-
Thanks for finding that Nancy. I guess I'll have to find my v5 CD to test that PRJ, the current versions aren't doing it right. Those patterns should be moving outward and a new wave should be formed in the center to replace the one that just left and it all should be moving a whole lot faster.
-
I just tried v9.5 That's like A:M after a transporter malfunction.
-
there was a time when this material would produce smooth ripples (not bands) radiating from the center, with new ripples forming in the center as the old ones moved outward. I've tried it back to v10.5 and i can't get that effect which is THE effect it is intended for.
-
I'm afraid neither of those is behaving properly. The ring pattern in those is scaling, which is incorrect. In true waves the distance between wave crests will not change as they move outward.
-
Do you have a PRJ that makes ripples radiate out from the center in motion?
-
Can anyone point me to a PRJ from any version of A:M that shows the Wave material behaving as expected?
-
Beautiful!

mmm... ribs!
-
Looks like you need a hazmat room to have that printer.
-
With the Form1+ printer that works by curing a resin... if you had an enclosed hollow space in your model it would end up filled with liquid?
-
You could print the base with a hollow space for a lead weight.

Nancy does a lot of cool non-conventional renders! A lot of the look of the samples in that video at the top could be had if one was willing to do a bit of compositing with buffers that A:M can generate. I'm thinking of doing my next "It can't be done" on getting non-CG looks with extended render techniques.
-
$149 per liter for the Form1+ printer still sounds very expensive.
-
I do like the multiple color printing that Matt got. I guess printing her a new car wont' work.

Looks like some old-style Youtube URLS didn't convert.

How to Clip an object moving through an invisible wall

one advantage of the material effector approach might be that you could have a fuzzy edge. I'm not sure if that's true but possibly it is. -
"I can't draw" - Let's deal with this myth once and for all
robcat2075 replied to Rodney's topic in Open Forum
expanding on my previous thought... CG has added a new complication to the general public's understanding of art skills. Some will think the computer does all the work while others perhaps understand there is some knowledge or software that must be mastered before you can get the computer to do all the work. -

I think the public at large regards graphic art as mostly the product of inspiration. That's the way its treated in movies and the skills to make art are rarely discussed. On the other hand it's pretty much an accepted truth among the public that fine musicians have spent many hours and years practicing their skills. The public grasps the "work" of music more than of art so they are less likely to understand that art... drawing... could be worked at to get better. -
She better be excited about it, it's the only choice she has if she attends that school. I'm sure she did something wrong, that's not a typical result she's getting there, but in an overly complicated software environment it's harder to track down the specific "wrong" among all the possibilities. She wasn't blaming the tools, but she was alarmed that she didn't know where to begin to fix it. I lost track of the thread on Facebook so I don't know if she ever got back on track. Have you seen Matt's Tireman character? That's a great example of A:M being a powerful tool. Matt was at an advertising agency and this tire company came in wanting their logo turned into a 3D animated character. The agency had a crew of Maya guys on staff but they said it couldn't be done, not without weeks of effort. But with A:M Matt was able to turn around a working version of the character in about a day. The client loved it and Matt ended up doing a whole series of commercials and promotions for them. One person with A:M got something done that a whole team of Maya people couldn't get done.
