Master chief Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 OK so more or less trying to pull off a black hole and need some sort of warping effect ie Any one have even foggiest idea where to start on this one? Quote
TheSpleen Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I just did it using a starfield and and editing prog using a "Drain" effect but the mov file was 125mb so I didn't upload it. Quote
TheSpleen Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 gimme a couple minutes I put on youtube Quote
TheSpleen Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 here is both http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl9ZgJzcB2o Quote
Fuchur Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 here is both http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl9ZgJzcB2o Another approach would be an high index of refraction with a geoemtry which allows that... but this will result in longer rendertimes and may be less controlable... See you *Fuchur* Quote
Darkwing Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 There was a very cool thread some years ago about making a black hole, you should search the forum, it might still be kicking around! Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 28, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted August 28, 2012 I tried some streaks in a Vortex and negative Fan but it's hard to get the particles to move slowly... Vortex.mov Quote
John Bigboote Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I tried some streaks in a Vortex and negative Fan but it's hard to get the particles to move slowly... Pretty danged cool, Rob. Did you try 'upping' your project FPS to some ridiculous amount, like 400 ? Quote

Darkwing Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 This is the thread to which I was referring earlier Quote
Master chief Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 Spleen i do like your effect but my next questions is , how do i do them? I'm sure its pretty easy but there ether hidden in some section of AM I'm not aware of or i just don't know how to set them up Quote
Fuchur Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I tried some streaks in a Vortex and negative Fan but it's hard to get the particles to move slowly... Pretty danged cool, Rob. Did you try 'upping' your project FPS to some ridiculous amount, like 400 ? For some reason that made them go faster You can do a trick there: Rendering at 50fps (or more) and set the playspeed to 25fps. See you *Fuchur* Quote
Admin Rodney Posted August 28, 2012 Admin Posted August 28, 2012 I tried some streaks in a Vortex and negative Fan but it's hard to get the particles to move slowly... Pretty danged cool, Rob. Did you try 'upping' your project FPS to some ridiculous amount, like 400 ? For some reason that made them go faster Well, maybe I'm missing something here but 400FPS is considerably faster than 24FPS. To slow it down to a relative speed in the other direction you'd want to drop to 4FPS (less feet of film/frames traveling past the viewer every second). Edit: Just saw Fuchur's post. Fuchur's recipe will (at least in theory) slow a 50FPS sequence down by 1/2. What makes it somewhat theoretical is the variables that can effect the viewer's 'real' playback speed. In order to know for sure and hit a precise target we'd need to know more about those variables. EDIT: THAT is a very cool effect. Me likey. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 28, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted August 28, 2012 The problem was that the motion per frame became greater with greater FPS settings. Setting the FPS slower does get slower particle motion per frame but other aspects of the particle motion are skewed by this too. Getting it right won't be as simple as I thought. You can experiment with it... Vortex02_slower.prj Quote
pixelplucker Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 An even simpler version is to decal a flattened cone and animate with muscle mode and/or bones the hole where you can pull it away and increase the opening. Fisheye effect seems to expand the nearby stars. Quote
johnl3d Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I thought why not an animated material ...here's a rough idea stars.mov modified cone with material on two groups inner and outer animated star.zip Quote

Darkwing Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 What about adding a sort of gassy swirl as well, y'know, from planets and light and stuff being sucked in? Also very cool Quote
johnl3d Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 not quite right first trial of gas clouds stars3.mov quick trial of another approach stars3a.mov Quote
Kamikaze Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 I love this thread..... and Johnl3d=TG, that was a cool looking mat effect ......... Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted September 3, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted September 3, 2012 Here's the approach suggested by Pixelplucker earlier VortexH.mov Each spline ring is on its own bone. One pose rotates the bones and the other pose scales them. StarsBlackHole.zip I lifted that picture off of APOD so it's probably not free to use, it's just for this demonstration. Quote
phatso Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I would experiment with distortion boxes. It seems to me that would be a good way to show how normal physics breaks down. Quote
johnl3d Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 played with this again still rough idea the gas clouds change maybe to slowly stars5.mov stars5.zip sped up the gas clouds a little stars5a.mov Quote
Admin Rodney Posted September 6, 2012 Admin Posted September 6, 2012 Oooo. I really like that last one John. (although... I'm picturing it as smoke trails floating up vertically all around a subject) Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted September 6, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted September 6, 2012 Cosmic donuts! Quote
