  1. Since it's still there after Reset Settings go ahead a submit a bug report. You could always cancel it if the problem disappears in v18n.
  2. In A:M... Help>Reset Settings There doesn't seem to be such a menu item in NR
  3. Wait until v18n comes out and try that before you do a report. I have the beta of that and it doesn't appear to have the problem here. In NetRender it is possible to drag the dividing line between "Description" and "Time" to change the space allotted to each column but A:M doesn't have that. Does Reset all Settings change anything?
  4. Perhaps "Pro" is short for something other than "professional", but I can't imagine what.
  5. Fun Fact: Insects are called "insects" because they are in sections. It's true. The ancient Greeks called them ἔντομον [éntomon] which means "cut in sections". The Roman naturalist Pliny translated that idea literally into Latin to get insectum. "Insect" first appeared in English in 1601 in a translation of Pliny's text and most European languages also use some variation of insectum. (That was going to be an interstitial in the award video but I never got around to it.)
  6. Charming work, once again, Nancy! It might have been funny if they had an extra set of arms (being insects and all) so the one on the left could have a guitar in the lower pair and and a little ukelele in the top pair.
  7. On the camera front... Microcenter did take it back for a full refund! I saw the clerk slap a new "Open Box" sticker on it (it had two already) for yet another $20 price reduction. It's fatal downfall for me was that it recorded in .mts format. There are utilities that claim to be able to "re-wrap" mts files into quicktime without having to re-encode it all but none of them worked on the files from this camera. Now I need to research an HD camcorder that is more suitable for my needs and budget.
  8. Everyone should definitely click thru on the image to see the dissolve effect in the GIF. That's quite instructive. I was thinking of making a requirement of the contest to submit a wireframe along with the final render so we could all learn more from each other's efforts.
  9. The difference in "index of refraction" for water and glass is so small that for most casual 3D purposes they could be modeled as one continuous substance rather than try to separate them. A lathe cross section for a bowl with water in it might look something like this... The fish would swim inside the solid part. Notice the tiny curve where the surface of the "water" meets the side of the bowl. (the "meniscus")
  10. I hope it didn't seem that long! Thanks, none-the-less! Anyway, my goal was to give the winners some more time in the sun than we usually give them around here. It was fun to talk to Gerald, Matt and Kevin and find that they are all living commercials for A:M. Just ask them, "What do you like about A:M?" and off they go! I hope everyone enjoyed getting to know some of our accomplished users a bit more.
  11. Nope, you have to take the money! It's the rules, ya know!
  12. I'm short on time so I haven't tried it. It looks like a good candidate for a bug report. "One frame in sequence doesn't render" Just to try, what happens if you shift EVERYTHING...3 frames later? Does it still hang anywhere?
  13. Full contest results now in the 2nd post!
  14. For the record, the full contest results... Congratulations for our three medalists: 1st place Gerald (Fuchur) also will receive a Hash Siggraph jacket. 2nd place Matt (John Bigboote) also won a caricature by Largent 3rd place Kevin (detbear) also won 1$ TX lottery ticket money Receiving a "Top 5" certificate will be: Nancy (nancygormezano) Paul (faealba) also won 2$ TX lottery ticket money Steve (Shelton) (Paul and Steve tied at 5th) The rest of the top 10 finishers will receive a "Top 10" certificate: (in alphabetical order) Jason (thejobe) John (johnl3d) Rodney (Rodney) also won a caricature by Largent Roger (Roger) also won a caricature by Largent The medals are a work in progress which you can follow on the forum in WIP. The certificates are expected to include a seal that reproduces the imagery of the medal, so those will be waiting for the medal to get done as well. Mark Largent is handling the fulfillment of the caricatures. TX lottery winnings will be sent by me via PayPal. Thanks for taking part, I hope it was enjoyable for everyone to test their skills in the Insect Image Contest!

  16. Data mining features of Windows 10 are now being sent as updates to Windows 7 and 8. Article on how to side-step them... Windows 10 Worst Feature Now Installing On Windows 7 And Windows 8
  17. It's real close now....
  18. I'm trying both "Correct Normals" and "Refind Normals" on a simple case. "Refind Normals" seems to try to get all the normals to be facing one way. "Correct Normals" may be for some other purpose?
  19. If I in the model window with nothing selected there is a menu choice for "Refind Normals" I'm not sure what the intended difference between "Correct Normals" and "Refind Normals" is. A model that crashes "Correct Normals" would be a good candidate for a bug report.
  20. The better identifier for seeing ab-normal patches is to toggle Backface Culling (Shift 6) and view in shaded mode. Inside-out normals are pretty obvious then. >Refind Normals does a pretty good job of getting all normals in the same direction
  21. This may be an alpha channel difference. Is Alpha Channels OFF in both renders?
  22. Normals are in the middle of a patch. Those look like something else.
  23. v. 11b? I'm pretty sure that's not the last version of v11
  24. Here is an example of the work Ken Citron (pixelplucker) has done with casting medals from 3D-printed models. On left is the fresh pewter, on the right is an antiqued version.
