KenH Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Given that there's so few on this forum, I thought I'd add one. Time to texture. Quote
MATrickz Posted July 31, 2004 Posted July 31, 2004 Thats awesome! I love its face haha , it should make for some great animations! Quote
mtpeak2 Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 Looks cool Ken. It reminds me of the cave troll of LOTR. Is that what you were aiming for? Quote
3DArtZ Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 Looks way cool! Lets see the wires! Mike Fitz www.3dartz.com Quote
binder3d Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 Wow that really likes cool. It likes like the cave troll form Lord of the Rings. Quote
Admin Rodney Posted August 1, 2004 Admin Posted August 1, 2004 Very nice Ken! Really looking forward to seeing him with textures applied. Quote
steve392 Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 Thats a good looking troll Ken ,looking forward to seing it textured Quote
KenH Posted August 1, 2004 Author Posted August 1, 2004 Thanks peeps! Here's his wires. There's a few 5 pointers in there but I couldn't see any other way with his face being that shape. Quote
KenH Posted August 1, 2004 Author Posted August 1, 2004 I'll put this here as it's easier to post a pic.....Is anyone having a problem with specular highlights? I've bumped up the specularity on this barrel and the light has spec turned on, but there's no white rim on the barrel. Can someone confirm/deny this. Cheers. Quote
KenH Posted August 1, 2004 Author Posted August 1, 2004 No it wasn't on. Actually there is a specular highlight in the pic....I discovered it was so large that it covered the whole of the barrel. *But* as the "Specular Colour" in the properties is set to white, I was expecting the highlight to be white also. I've sent this to support as it seems to be a bug. Quote
mtpeak2 Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 Same thing here Ken. Specular is working, but the color doesn't. It's using the diffuse color. Quote
KenH Posted August 2, 2004 Author Posted August 2, 2004 I got it to work....you have to set the "Main model name" specular colour to the colour you want. Then it will work for any groups you have in the model. Quirky I know. Anyway, here's an update on the trolls environment. Picture him bounding through the shadows in this corridor....knocking into things. He's on the run! Quote
Emilio Le Roux Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Nice Job! Say, is that troll big? like, 3 meters high? or it's an impression. Yes, it seems there is a small bug in specular color. When the specular color INSIDE the model->surface properties is 'NOT SET', all specular on any groups uses the underlying diffuse color for specular. That means no specular for black objects. Just set it to white or something. Any spec color inside the groups settings will work then. Emilio Quote
KenH Posted August 2, 2004 Author Posted August 2, 2004 (edited) Does anyone know why this is happening with the darktree eye material? It's like the eyes have their own light source when in the shadows. It's too cartoony looking for what I want. It's OK...I got this sorted. I had reset all the properties under the model name. Apparently if you do this, it gives quite a good toon look even when rendering in standard mode. Edited August 2, 2004 by KenH Quote
Emilio Le Roux Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Just asking for curiosity! I won't complain about a troll's height - nor in its presence anyway. Emilio Quote
modernhorse Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 Ken - I think he looks great. Perhaps his eyes are too white? I would expect this nasty lookin' guy to have bloodshot, slightly yellowish eyes. Then again, maybe he's a 'clean' troll. Nice job ! Doug Quote
Fuchur Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 Wow... damn nice thingy.... i like him... *Fuchur* Quote
Admin Rodney Posted August 7, 2004 Admin Posted August 7, 2004 Nice! That texture really making him come alive! Keep it up! Quote
KenH Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Thanks Rodney! I think this one is getting pretty close to the final look. Quote
Zaryin Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Haven't posted in awhile, but had to on this one. I was just thinking of doing a cave trol, but you beat me to it . Excellent. I can't tell you how impressed I am with you bump mapping. Great Job. Quote
steve392 Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 That looks terrific Ken ,can't wait to see him animated.I am gonna have to learn how to do that bump mapping Quote
JBarrett Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Looks pretty cool! Can't wait to see this bugger MOVE! Quote
Sharky Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Hi Kenh! Your model has a wonderful texture! I like it,because it looks very lifelike! What did you use it? Photoshop? Zbrush? Congratulation, Sharky Quote
KenH Posted August 9, 2004 Author Posted August 9, 2004 Thanks guys! I promise that next time I post here I'll have him moving. I'm waiting for TSM2 to arrive. Sharky I used photoshop for his texture and it was abit of a pain trying to get rid of seams in all the texture levels(colour/bump/spec). I can still see them if I look close, but then again I know where to look He'll be in a dark room when he's moving. Quote
gazzamataz Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Ken, I was gonna say he looked a bit smooth... then you put the bump map on him and WOW! He's looking real good The only thing that I think that looks outta place is the shine on his skin. Unless your troll uses baby oil, which I doubt, then I would have thought his skin would not have such sharp specular points on it. Out of interest how long did you spend on the texturing and did you do it in AM 11 using a Wacom tablet? I have never really gone that deep into texturing using maps I will have to start - you've urged me on! He's gonna be interesting to see animated, that is if you are gonna rig him. Quote
KenH Posted August 17, 2004 Author Posted August 17, 2004 Yep he's too shiny. I still haven't set up PS on my new machine to fix it. AM was the first thing I installed! All the textures took about 2-3 days to do and I have a tiny Wacom. Fiddily but still easier than a mouse. I'm glad I've made you look at textures as there doesn't seem to be enough of it done with AM.(Not that others aren't doing great stuff with it already) I'm chomping at the bit to animate...where's TSM2!! Quote
gazzamataz Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Woooo Ken, nice eye. BTW what's that Simbioant? I have heard of it - obviously for creating complicated shaders. Where did you get it and what does it also do? Quote
KenH Posted August 19, 2004 Author Posted August 19, 2004 You can get it free here http://www.darksim.com/html/download_simbiont2.html Basically it's a load of cool materials. Quote
Sharky Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 Hi KenH! Can you write me a little tutorial about texture of your Troll character? This texture is very nice and lifelike! I interest the color and bump map editing in particular! Can you help me in this topic ? Regards, Sharky Quote
KenH Posted August 21, 2004 Author Posted August 21, 2004 No tutorials right now. But it's the same method as you use to make a texture map(see Wills UV tutorial). The only difference is it's in black and white. Medium grey is no bumps, black "digs in" to the model and white raises it. Not that hard really. Quote
Sharky Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 Hi Ken! Ok, I know this tutorial and principles of bump map,but how can you edit these maps? Another thing: I saw your photo and I saw a book on it, What book is it? Cheers, Sharky Quote
KenH Posted August 21, 2004 Author Posted August 21, 2004 It can be done in different ways. I just used Photoshop. What book are you referring to? Is it the one in my Profile pic? The one on the desk is just the AM manual. I always keep it handy. Quote
Sharky Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Hi KenH! Can you help me? I have a little problem with bump map editing! I don't know tools in photoshop, how I can make bump map! Here I think skin surface on the nose, on the hands, etc. Do you use plugin? Regards, Sharky Quote
KenH Posted September 2, 2004 Author Posted September 2, 2004 As I said, you use the normal paint tools in PS. But the only "colours" you paint with are black, white and the different shades of grey in between. No plugins required. Quote
Sharky Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Hi! Ok, I understand it! How could you make the skin surface of your troll model ? How could you accomplish a lot of small bump on the skin surface? Cheers, Sharky Quote
KenH Posted September 2, 2004 Author Posted September 2, 2004 A bit of time and a large dose of patience. Each of the wrinkles is hand drawn. It's possible you could clone alot of it off a photo or something, but I didn't have one....A tip would be to follow the contour of the splines. They give an indication at to the "lie of the land". Quote
Sharky Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Hi KenH! Can you show me a bump map? Cheers, Sharky Quote
Sharky Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 Hi! It's amazing, and so it was working very hard and a large dose of patience, wasn't it? Nice work KenH! Thanks, Sharky Quote
