Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted September 19, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted September 19, 2012 related but unrelated... A SIGGRAPH demo of a process to strengthen 3D prints. Unnarrated for some reason. Quote
Admin Rodney Posted September 19, 2012 Admin Posted September 19, 2012 Interesting. The hallowing and placement of multiple struts at the very end of the video was what I thought would be the most beneficial. And it's something that is really hard a lot harder to do without computers. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted September 19, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted September 19, 2012 The "Replicator 2" has been announced http://www.makerbot.com/replicator2-press-assets/ the specs say it supports stl AND obj files. a mere $2200 This 3D-printing-for-the-masses stuff seems to keep getting more expensive. Yes it is... a little price already, even for such a great machine... anyway it looks much better with the metal body and the more professional look too it. AND it is capable to print even bigger... I am strugelling with my money bag again See you *Fuchur* Quote

Gerry Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Here's s good article from Wired last month: http://www.wired.com/design/2012/09/how-ma...-manufacturing/ They're doing amazing stuff! And it smells like waffles! Quote
largento Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 One of the big blogs did an article on whether or not someone could use one of these to fabricate a working firearm. Thankfully, the consensus was "not yet," but it was still a sobering thought. That said, boy, would I love to be able to print my own Wannabe Pirates action figures! And can you imagine Flemm's ship, The Sea Anemone as a 3D printed piece? It's so uncool to be poor. :-) Quote
John Bigboote Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 If A:M 'plays ball' (works with) these printers... it should be marketed as a powerful, easy to learn and use method of MAKING the file geometry for them. It sounds like it is the next 'big thing' (we've been saying that for years, but it finally looks like home 3D printers are right around the corner now) Perhaps A:M should advertise on the MakerBot webpage? Implement new 3D features such as a pre-scaled 'world' for makerbot... Quote

Yeah that's a marketing wave that could be jumped on although I think the process needs to get dramatically faster I wonder what the average soccer mom is going to be printing besides coffee cups and clothespins. Gerry Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I wonder what the average soccer mom is going to be printing besides coffee cups and clothespins. Well, that's the question, isn't it. Back in the 70's I met a geeky guy whose greatest wish was to have his own personal computer and all I could think was "Why would anyone want to have a COMPUTER in their HOUSE?" Quote

Admin Rodney Posted October 7, 2012 Admin Posted October 7, 2012 So... what will be the 3D printing equivalent of watching cat videos on YouTube? Why... making toys for your cat to play with so you can video them and upload it to YouTube... of course. There will be no end to it. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted October 12, 2012 Hash Fellow Posted October 12, 2012 People trying to complicate it... Myhrvold patents 3D printing DRM To stop you from printing things out. Quote
Gerry Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 A patently idiotic plan. And yes, feel free to re-use this pun. Quote
