Dark_Jedi Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 After the sucsess of my jedi starfighter, iv decided to go back and fix up some of my previouse models My old droid starfighter was badly done. i made in only one day. and didnt care about and detail. What i have so far on my new droid starfighter has taken me almost a week As usual, feel free to give any coments you wish and let me know if im doing anything rong. or if somehting can be better Before:_____________________________________After: Quote
luckbat Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 One of these days, Jedi, you're going to have to write up a tutorial on mechanical modeling. I think we'd all like to know how you do it. Keep up the good work! Quote
Leo73 Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Here Here. I want to know as well. Looks great so far. Quote
cuboos Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 yea give us one i could use better mechanical modeling knowledge to help make my tripod look more menacing i have seen a lot of mech modeling tutorials that do ok results but none have come close to you Quote
DanCBradbury Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 that's just incredible modeling work kevin! Is everything solid, or are a lot of the things you add just nernies and not part of the main structure? Awesome stuff Jedi. Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted May 8, 2006 Author Posted May 8, 2006 hardly anything is fully attached. it would take to many control points to do that and the more control points the slower it goes and i dont need that lol Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted May 9, 2006 Author Posted May 9, 2006 tutorial on mechanical modeling? its really not that hard.. just every time consuming all those little blocks again and again and again :| Quote
luckbat Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 It may not be hard for you, but it's nearly impossible for many other people. If I needed to model something with all those curves, I don't know where I'd even begin. Quote
Dhar Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Mike's right, it's always that first step which is the hardest. Quote
Jin-Kazama Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 jedi....this is an amazing work man.....u r the mechanical guru now if it's possiable, can u show me some wireframe/shaded images? Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted May 9, 2006 Author Posted May 9, 2006 Ok jin here you go. im not sure if this is exactaqly what your wanting. i made it black bacause the white lines were blending in with the white model Quote
KenH Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 I think he also wants a shaded wireframe...and so do I. You can do that by pressing the zero key on your keyboard and then take a screenshot. It's better than pure wireframe because it's less confusing when you don't see the splines behind the splines. Also, how did you start that shape? Did you begin with a primative? Quote

Did you begin with a primative? that is shaded wire frame. just the model is black i started with a circle.. then streched it into the front view shape.. then i lathed it. and used distortion to bend it into the chape it is Quote
MMZ_TimeLord Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Seems a bit spline heavy, you can probably loose these splines as well as others without loosing your shape. Your mechanical modeling is wonderful... keep up the good work! Quote
Jin-Kazama Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 that's is a lot of splines...wow the splines arranged like if it was a polys before do u use the spline patch plugin? Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted May 10, 2006 Author Posted May 10, 2006 not sure what that is exactaly :S ad i never expected i was using to many splines.. guess my JSF has way to many then Quote
Jin-Kazama Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 well jedi...yes u do A:M had learnt me that it's a good thing to do your model with the lowest patch count number...A:M isn't a ploly modeling software and u can have nice and smooth curves from a simple number of CPs on a spline...good for not making ur model so complecated and also for render time.. i'm a littel buzy with my car modeling tut...my next project will be modeling the UFO robot GRENDIZER...have u ever heard about him?? i'm very proud of ur models...looks very very very very very very great...only...if u try to lower the patche count...u r the guru of mechancal modeling man....(( waiting for a tut buddy )) Quote

luckbat Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 1. The number of splines in a model doesn't significantly affect its rendering time. 2. "Tut" is short for "tutorial." Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted May 11, 2006 Author Posted May 11, 2006 oh well if everyone is really wishing for a tatoril ill make one as soon as i finish my movie Quote
Jin-Kazama Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 luckbat...do u mean that a model with 3000 patches will be rendered as a model with 300 patches? mechanical modeling is a big challenge in A:M....very few modelers could manage it in A:M...i'm still having a bad time in beveling edges, smoothing curves.......no polys...no smooths....manual work.....hard isn't it???? but u know what??...............it taste good.....the challenge....u r going ahead to take the lead of this type of modeling for us (( the beginners modelers )) keep the good work up buddy.....u deserve my respect. Quote

luckbat Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 do u mean that a model with 3000 patches will be rendered as a model with 300 patches? Well, this image has 154,350 patches, and it was rendered on a 3GHz laptop at 1600x1200: http://www.hash.com/users/greg/Tractor_Abuf_S.jpg Render time: 82 seconds. Quote
Jin-Kazama Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 ok luckbat.....what slows down rendering time? the image is good....u have a powerful processor...mine is 1.7...lucky Quote
luckbat Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 ok luckbat.....what slows down rendering time? Everything else. the image is good....u have a powerful processor...mine is 1.7...lucky Greg Rostami rendered that, not me. My own machine is a dual-2.7Ghz. Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted May 13, 2006 Author Posted May 13, 2006 ok iv now made the body with detail on top and bottom. i still have to make the head and i think that will be done by tomorrow. other than that allmost all modeling is comleted Quote
Dark_Jedi Posted May 14, 2006 Author Posted May 14, 2006 HORRAY! got all the modeling done on the droid starfighter once i add colour ill have the 4 different views just like the jedi starfighter. please give any comments you want Quote
KenH Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Cool. You should post these on a star wars hang out and see what they think. Also, a mov turnaround would be good. Quote
Viper GTX2.0 Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Nice Driod Starfighter i like the detail on it. Hope to see more models from starwars you are making. Quote
