Over the course of the last 6 years, Robert Holmen has allowed me to gleam some of his knowledge about AM. He started reviewing some of the animations that Chris Daily and myself were working on. After just a little while it turned from reviewing to teaching. I have enjoyed our time and have been able to get some animations done under his tutelage. Here is one of the first one I completed titled "Fly Trap". flyfinal.mp4

Before we left town, the weather was so bad in Tulsa. I decided to model a female figure. I have started on the head but will have to wait until we get back to finish her. More of cross between real and cartoon. Want to have a "pixar" like face. I modeled this in a afternoon while working on a couple of computers. so there are still some issues.

I saw a hand drawn character several years ago that I always thought would translate to 3d. I have tried to recreate what I saw but of course put my spin on things. Here is one that took a couple of evenings to create.

It has been a while since I created something for fun. Here is the first render of the new character I started. I hope to have the head completed by Tuesday night. Steve

I have been going through all the old models and I have noticed how some of them have held up while others, well, are not very good. Cupid is one I am pleased with and the rig is in and now rigging the face. Here is an action shot of cupid.

The last three weeks has placed me in a funk that has been difficult to get out. WE are bombarded every day with bad news after bad news. In the last week I have decided that I will break out of this funk. One thing I have always done when I am down is to create something. Weather it is art work, models, model railroad, wood working items or even something with AM, it allows me to focus on what every I am doing and get away from all the news. We received some good news this week as our tests came back negative. Even though we have been sick the news lifted our spirits. I decided to create a character that has a "Jay Leno Chin". I wanted …

I have posted anything in awhile. Well the contest was the last thing I have modeled. So I thought I would do another female face with the big eyes and pointy chin. This is the fourth female I have done with this style. I am not sure why the dark spots rendered under the nose. There is a hook on both sides under a 5 point patch.

I pulled PM from Cupids Sick day and started working on a basic face rig. I have put bones in the eyes, eyelids, brows, lips and jaw. I have done a quick weight run through and then added a couple of constraints. And well, I am pleased with the basics. I have a lot of relationships to build but other wise the basic face rig is installed.

It has been awhile since I posted. Robert has been working with Chris and I over the past few months and I have learned a great deal. Here is something I started in 2006 and it is time to get started again. Steve

Chris and I are starting our next project. It will focus around the coffee shop. We are building the background stories of Cupid's sick day and learning to be better animators. coffee.mp4

I have brought in some of the audio as a .wav file. I can play the wave file from the project workspace sometimes. But when I import the audio into the chor I get no sound at all. Am I missing something? Steve

In our Cupid project, we ran across a problem with big models and big sets. While considering this issue, I stumbled across a technique for composing models from other models. I'm sure others have come across it before, but I don't think it's common knowledge. vM8caqBArDg or here In the first part of the video, I unfortunately refer to the inner models as street lights instead of traffic lights. Hopefully that's not too distracting. Additional information I did not mention in the video: An additional use for this technique would be rendering an animation with the foreground objects turned off to get the background only. The foreground can then be rendered on its own …

Sometimes just do it over. I had a simple on/off relationship where in the off state the apron was not showing or 100 percent transparent and on state 0 percent transparent And the apron was visible. Well somehow when I created the relationship I inadvertently hit the wrong pose slider, I then selected the correct apron slider and set the the default state of relationship. Everything worked and test rendered to make sure. Later I removed the pose slider that I inadvertently selected in the creation of the apron on/off relationship. I saved the model. Now last night I wanted to render a test frame and no matter what I did the apron rendered even though the poser …

You guys inspired me to consider the possibilities with your Multi-Model Pose Sets and so I did a test to see if an old idea might work. It took me a few tries but I finally came up with something that demonstrates the basic idea. The idea is that through the Active setting we can add an expression that will turn on/off an object based on proximity to another object (such as a Camera). I believe I've got this somewhat in reverse (objects disappear as the camera comes close to them) but it might serve as a proof of concept. In the project file I also created another file called 'The Zone' but I haven't done anything useful with that yet. The idea might be t…

I started on the new girl and was having some problems. The patches around the eyes are to be the lashes, with cookie cut. I have used png and tga with alpha but when I tell the decal to be cookie cut it renders as a patch. Did I miss something? Steve Render was done with sss and AO but render time was rather large.

I realized tonight that one of the sets I was working on last year when the "catastrophe" hit our house was the office set. I lost most of the set and models. So tonight I started over.

What would happen if Cupid had to take a sick day from work? Who would do his duties? Where would You find a replacement? These are the questions I will try to answer over the course of this project. I started in March of 2009 on a project for fun. I wanted to create a couple of characters in a city scene more or less walking the sidewalks. As I laid down the ideas of what I wanted, the direction changed and I came up with the idea of Cupid's Sick Day. In 09 I modeled a number of characters and a few props and was on my way. As some of you have followed the thread you know that 2010 was not a good year here at the Shelton's. I looked back over 2010 and no…

Finished modelling this umbrella and wanted to rig it for an animation I am working on. I found where some one had done the entire movement of the umbrella in muscle mode but I wanted to place bones on this model. I was thinking the frame work of the umbrella is a lot like a knee. As the release slides down the pole it pulls the ribs inward like a knee. Any thoughts? Steve
