My 11 Second Club entry

Recommended Posts

I had some time in-between projects and an idea for the 11 second club's provided soundtrack this month, so I slapped together an entry. I don't expect to do well, it's always fun participating tho. The only thing I needed to model was the room to match my vision... the characters and car are all old models from old projects. Now, back to WORK!

It will be available to view with all the other entries in early March. http://www.11secondclub.com/

Clever and fun, Matt! Well done!

I can appreciate the work of folks who want to spend endless hours obsessing over every detail, but I can't identify with them. My first year of college, I was an art major and there was this guy who would lock himself in his dorm room for a week before a drawing was due and come out with this photo-realistic piece that everybody would "ooh" and "ahh" over. I'd do mine the night before and we both made "A"s in class. Afterwards, though, my teacher would come over and say that he was disappointed that I hadn't put more time into it. And I would politely nod and agree with him, all the while thinking, "Why are you telling me this. Is there a grade above A?" :-)

The 11-second club also creates a Catch-22 with their voting process where you are obliged to watch every entry before you can vote. I can completely understand why, but you have to be pretty dedicated to even consider participating.

Whoa--- that's NEW! There are sometimes 250+ entries!!! I have given-up on trying to make it all the way thru before because it takes so much time and you can only listen to the same clip so many times before you go nuts... plus a LOT of entries are pretty darned bad.

They are what I call... animation-snobs. I just do it for the practice.

Admittedly a lot of the comments should be taken with grain of salt. Some comments are more worthy of being considered.

Very importantly, IMO, is how well one can critique one's own work. For my own stuff, I can usually see what's wrong, but I am usually too lazy to fix, or usually get bored with the piece.

For those with professional PIXAR type aspirations, one has to be soooper picky, persistent. The goal is to be able to make the piece do exactly what someone else has in mind, to have complete control in being able to make those puppets behave! (and not just live with happy accidents). Others are aiming for TV work, which is not so critical, and others, have even less critical aspirations. Obviously different critique criteria for different venues.

Most importantly, a lot of these entrants are spending big, big bucks on animation schools and will be/or are currently in competition for relatively low numbers of animation jobs. Part of their animation training is fine-tooning their critical eye.

I find the "professional" e-critiques of the winners on 11-sec site to be informative.

Hm, I thought it was old! Haven't been over there in a year or more, they may have changed their system. Have you participated in a round of voting yet? I could be completely wrong on this.

You can vote on each one as you are viewing, however your votes aren't counted until you vote/view them all. You do not have to view/vote all at once. You can pick up where you left off. They keep track.

Nice scenario Matt.

At 11sec you don't have to vote on all of them for your votes to count, you can vote on just one if you want and it will count but it's gong to be the one they pick to serve up to you.

If there's 100 entries and i only vote on 50, the next person who comes along will first get the 50 i didn't vote on so they get caught up on total views.

You can skip an entry and not vote on it but they will keep bringing it back to you later until you vote on it. It would be very difficult for someone to get 50 friends to just vote on his particular entry. Beyond the limits of human patience I'd say.

Is the 11-second club a premature ejaculation support network? What crap audio did they give you to animate around? That's BS!

I think the girl needs to run out with a bottle of B&W, to make it sell. Sounds like you're joining a contest that's not worth participating in. Just judging by the fact that they're very particular about certain things, and you're not happy with it.

But it looks (awesome) like a scene from a Miami Vice themed show. But if so, let's do an hour of it... ouch! That's a lot of work.

But I think it looks really great... if there is a way to see much more of it... I'd be all for it.

I see they give A:M a little prop in their website, we rank just before 'etcetera'...:)

Entries can be character animations in any medium, from CG animation (Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, Animation:Master, etc.) to traditional 2D animation to stop-motion. Consider posting your progress videos in the Work in Progress forum. Feedback and criticism will make your animation stronger!

If you have time to kill, try to find mine and give it some hyper-critical comments- but a good ranking!

As Robcat said, can't just go to an entry, gotta wait till they serve it up to you. And I don't think the votes count until you've voted for them all. I might be wrong about that part.

Best of luck John, May it be a productive learning experience!

Sorry, I did not get to voting at all on any of the entries so i didn't get to yours to do any comments, but I'll give you the one that came to me first... avoid "isolated motion".

There are other names for it but it's when one body part moves but everything attached to it remains motionless. Like when the guy in front turns his head and his shoulders don't move at all. For some reason that works for Fred Flintstone and stop motion animators get away with it a lot but it almost always looks over-stiff in 3D characters. Having the shoulders help out even just a little bit on that motion would loosen the whole thing up.
