KenH Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 I started him a while ago, but haven't had the time/inclination to complete him. I probably won't either. If anyone wants to do that, go for it. Iron_Giant.zip Quote
phnxpyre Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 Well.....i have decided to take on the challenge! (i'm still pretty new to A:M, but i'll give it a try) thanks for the model, it's really cool. Here is what i have done so far.... ....and also what i plan on doing. i will post as i go on. comments and critiques please Quote
Kamikaze Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 Thanks Ken, Hope you dont mind if I use some of his /your Parts of the model, Im not sure what for yet, but someday ....... Good job as always on the model, evem not finished it looks great.... Phnxpyre, yes thats looking good also, keep us posted... Michael Quote
Admin Rodney Posted December 28, 2005 Admin Posted December 28, 2005 I was wondering if anyone had put together an Iron Giant. It doesn't surprise me that it would be you Ken. Off to a great start I must say and what a great way to collaborate. Go phnxpyre! Show us what you've got. Rodney Quote
phnxpyre Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 small update. just finished the rivets....and eyes. and somewhat fixed the wierd patches below the eyes and nose. but i don't really like the eyes i did. ---> they need to be more iron looking, and some what robotic. i have been trying out different types of feet designs, but havn't done one that i like to much. hopefully, i will finish the hands or feet next time i post here. (and eyes) Quote
Paul Forwood Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 I'm sure I saw Bob Taylor's name in the credits for the Iron Giant. I love that movie and so does my seven year old daughter. Another tin man with a big heart and emotional problems. ;-) Quote
phnxpyre Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Another update. Did some work on the hands, but not sure if i like them or not. So your suggestions would be much appreciated. I made two sizes of hands.... here is the small one: [attachmentid=12743] The bigger handed one: [attachmentid=12744] i am just not sure if the overall look of that hand really fits the iron giant. So any suggestion on a new design or a modification of this one, would be great. Thanks! Quote
rossk Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Hey, just wanted to say excellent job so far on the model. It's really coming together nicely. I'm not really sure about the hand... but here a try at help is-- First off, I think the fingers are fine as they are. I think the major problem is in the shape of the hand. Since the robot's forearm is a very angular regular shape, it seems natural to extend the same sort of shape to the hand rather than bringing in the rounded shape. Also it might seem a bit more natural to have the thumb off of the same plane as the other fingers. Attached is my "drawing" of a hand concept... sorry that it isn't very good... other than lacking artistic ability, this is my first time drawing on a computer without the aid of my wacom drawing tablet. Keep up the great work! I'll be looking forward to seeing your progress in this thread. --Ross K Quote
phnxpyre Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Thanks man!!!! That totally makes sense. Thanks for the suggesetions. I'll test it out today and hopefully update tonight. Thanks again Quote
phnxpyre Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Well redid the hands. I kept the fingers, but redid the whole thing. Havn't done the wrist yet.--->i'll do it in a little bit. What do you think??? yes? no? more suggestions? Thanks (still doesn't look like a thumb, more like another finger) Quote
Dhar Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Coming along really nice phnx. I like what you've done so far, appealing look and expressive facials. I don't think there's anything wrong with the thumb, it's just turned wierd. If you turn the thumb in towards the middle finger I think it'll look fine, it's just the angle we're looking from. Quote
mtpeak2 Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Here's a pic of his hand, this was the best I could find. Quote
phnxpyre Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Thanks guys! I tried to turn the finger to look more like a thumb , that didn't work to well so i will turn it back. I still think i need the thumb on the side of the hand....but i don't know, I will play around with it. Thanks for the feedback guys. I really appreciate it VERY much. Quote
phnxpyre Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Another little change on the hands....still havn't done any wrists. (still trying to finish the hands) tell me what you think. Quote
Ed Doyle Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 You might consider trying opposing fingers for ease of grasping. Something like the attached animation. A similar idea might work for the feet. Ed Fingers_3.mov.zip Quote
Dhar Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 What if you put the thumb here [attachmentid=12781] ? Quote
phnxpyre Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 Dhar, i think your on to something I'll try that. Thanks Quote
phnxpyre Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Hey guys.....update i feel like i have been working on the hands for a long time.... Dhar: i tried what you were saying, just to put the thumb on the inside, but then it looked really funny, so i kind of did what you suggested but just angled it different. Thanks for your input/help! Well... i still am not be done with the hands, so tell me what you think. [attachmentid=12822] (does any one else see the wierd shadow that the left hand is casting, could be just the angle) (ohhh!!! i still have to do the wrists by the way.) Quote
KenH Posted January 2, 2006 Author Posted January 2, 2006 Looking good. Thanks for trying to complete him. I think his eyes are more like lights rather than actual physical eyes. I'd need to check that though. Also, maybe you could fix the patches on his chest on a version of him. They're all lumpy. I had a nightmare with it when I was making him. Quote
phnxpyre Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Thanks Ken!!! yeah, i started researching the iron giant, and i found out a few things -------> i have been doing the hands way wrong. -------> the eyes as you said are glowing. -------> then i found out how the feet go. so far.... i fixed his hands to actually be correct. [attachmentid=12832] Ken: yeah i still am going to fix the un-even-ness of the chest part, as well as smooth out some other rough areas. (and also the cylinder on the wrist part is a little big, so i will have to fix that) Quote
Guest william40 Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Here is a very quick sketch of the hand. It is only meant to illustrat the positioning of the thumb. From reference that I have, hi hand is set up much like a human hand. Thumb attachment should be at the base of the hand. The thumb is almost as long as the middle finger, a little more width to them. Hope this helps. [attachmentid=12833] Quote
phnxpyre Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Thanks wiliiam for the help! I was thinking that exact same thing too....it will be easy to fix. Thanks again! Quote
phnxpyre Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 really small update..... fixed the positioning of the thumb. [attachmentid=12860] (PS: i just got the new version of A:M .... ) Edit: Anyone know why the grid lines are showing on top of the model. It is only on the front view that it is doing this. [attachmentid=12861] Quote
Dhar Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Those thumbs look perfect. Nice work. About the grid lines, whenever I start getting wierd stuff it's time for me to let the CPU cool down. Somebody, a while back, in this forum said that A:M really works your CPU. Quote
phnxpyre Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Well i havn't my computer on for probally 18 hour periods. (plenty of time to let it rest) and the past few days, i have noticed the gridlines are taking over the giant. lol. i guess it's not that big of a deal, but i was just wondering "why?" Thanks! Quote
KenH Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Strange. You might try copying the cps of the model into a new model structure. I started it in v11 I think, so it might be a compatibility problem. Also, try updating your graphic card drivers. Maybe also switch between opengl and direct3D. Those hands are looking fine btw. Quote
DanCBradbury Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 i think the disney's iron giant had fingers that matched the thickness of his hand. Anywho. Nice work Kythan. Quote
KenH Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Yeah, acutally going by that image the palm part of the hand probably shouldn't be as long also. And the thumb located halfway along it. Quote
phnxpyre Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 thanks for the suggestions! i will get busy on trying to fix the hand. I'll try copy and pasting the cp's onto a new model. thanks ken. (i was working on it in 11.1 too, and it still did that, i just started working on it in 12) Thanks for the reference photo Dan. much appreciated guys! (now to get working ) Quote
