Sound effect software

Obviously there are a ton of sounds needed in finish animations. Anything from a creaking door to an explosion to a window opening.

Almost everything has sound and looking for wavs or even worse free wavs is a pain.

What does everyone use to create sounds from scratch?

Not compose as im aware of very slick composition software, just effects like mentioned above.

P.S i did a search but I dont think mine is working right.

Go to SoundDogs.com, search, give it a listen, shell out your $1.35 or whatever, download the WAV, load it into AM, and go.

There are sound-searchengines in the i-net like soundsearch.com or findsounds.com, which can help you there... if you are looking for music you could use a program like magix musicmaker, ejay or so... if you can play a nice instrument, you can could try soundforge or audacity...

Why would you ever want to do that??? And think about it - the software would have to have jillions of terabytes of data to have a decent assortment of sounds!

Does such software exist? There are loads of royalty free sound effects collections out there. Maybe visit Magix and get one of their very cheap DVD collections containing 4000 effects + music etc.

Other than electronic synth sounds, and there are free and cheap programs on the Internet and in music mag CDs for those, the only way to create your own real sounds is with a good ($200 - $500 at least microphone) and portable recorder. The new little handheld digital ones that record on compact flash cards are nice and they are very quiet compared to DAT, reel and cassette recorders - even using the digital recording of a camcorder. Your most efficient and best bet, though, is to get sound effects that someone already professionally recorded and edited...there are royalty free CD collections from cheap to $1000 (the DVD Dale mentioned would work just fine) and good ones you can audition and pay for by the cut on the Internet as already mentioned.

Good lord, no. They're making decent condenser mics much cheaper these days; you don't need a $500 mic to record doors squeaking or car tires squealing. Especially if you're only recording at 16/44.

 

MXL and Октава make inexpensive (<US$100) condensers that sound fantastic for the price (though you'll need a preamp to supply power to the microphones).

 

If you want to go with dynamic mics (no power source required), the Shure SM57 and 58 are good lower-end ones, both under $100. They're a bit limited in the upper range, though, only going up to 15 or 16 KHz (even the cheapest condenser mics will go up to at least 20KHz).

I've found my best microphone is on my camcorder...pre-amp built right in...if you have a 'video-in' card, try it!

I bought a Fostex portable digital recorder..ithas an internal mic that does well for recording my own sound effects....I use a condenser mic with phantom power for anything musical.....but the cost adds up......if your not tryin for the big time animation.(Im not ,just had a few extra bucks to spare) ...there are tons of free and not so free ways to get what you want.....

Very funny because it's also my method and it's really fun.

I use all sorts of things like the vacuum-cleaner, blender from the kitchen, foods like rice (for rain), vegetables (for wind) .. and so on.. It's just imagination...
