  1. Fuchur - by patch image, you are talking about applying a decal I would create to the patch correct? I know the rough skin textured look is achieved by a material - can anyone give me a link to any material turorials? I have this great one http://www.colins-loft.net/free/mats/Demon_Skin_Material.htm but I was hoping to start out with one a little less complicated until I get it down a bit. Thanks
  2. Hi - I have played around w/ materials a bit from my last practice model and have a basic understanding of how it works. I have a couple of questions - I need practice modelling as well so I modeled a small dinosaur which I will use to work on materials and textures. What I am going for is for the dinosaur to have an alligator skin look - I am going to put the dinosaur in a short humerous animation - so I am not going for photorealistic, but I still want an alligator skin look. I also want to have green stripes going down his back - which is where I am getting confused. Is the skin texture (alligator look) done w/ materials and the stripes done w/ a decal? Also, I was looking into A:M Paint, and where does this program come in - does it just make the applying decals easier? Thanks for any help clearing this up for me. -Eric Here is the dinosaur
  3. Zaryin - hadn't tried any hair shaders - it surprising only took about 10 hours to render - compared to the Teddy Bare one that took about 150 hours - not sure why that took so long - same computer. Thanks Dhar - yes that first gumstick character is looking pretty weak, he was the first char and project though, so we'll cut him some slack. The site took too long to make and is a complex mess of loading and unloading flash movies... but the finished product turned out pretty good. Thanks - E
  4. Hi - thanks for the compliments. Robcat - that was kinda odd - I combed the hair down from the profile view just like I did from the front and still had the same look w/ the hair sticking out - I may go back in there and give it another try. He currently has an unkept scruffy rat look Thanks - Eric
  5. Hey everyone - this is my first shot at modelling a character with an outward mouth/jaw (animal) the other 4 characters I have done have flat faces, so I decided to give it a try. I asked my 3 year old what I should make and he said a rat.. when it was finished, he said it was "bad - make a new one", so I have a 3 years old opinion so far I am more interested in the modelling end of 3D animation, but I also put him in a short 20 second animation since my animation skills could use some work too. I put the character up on my site - he is the 5th one over on the top - pic of the rat. Any suggestions to make future projects better would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Eric 3D Character Animation Website
  6. Ah, thank you both - the volumetric setting is exactly what I was looking for.
  7. Hi - I have a light set as a klieg and I want it to be an obvious spotlight where you can see the light rays coming down and only the light - almost so the character would have to stick his hand in to see him in the surrounding darkness - is there a setting for that, I have been turning everything off and on in the lights setting, but no luck. If there isn't a setting - any ideas to get this effect would be great. Thanks - Eric
  8. Thanks everyone - have a great weekend
  9. I recently got a new computer and downloaded v14 from the Hash site - for some reason my library folders are empty - all the folders are there, but nothing in them. I opened up v13 and not having the problem in there. I went to the site and re-downloaded, but did not fix the problem.. any ideas? Thanks
  10. Thanks Paul - that was fast... I think answered my question before I posted it.
  11. Hi - to get some more modelling experience, I am working on my first "real" character who actually has a mouth that isn't against a flat face. ;-) The rat is a request from my 3 year old - All well as modelling experience I am trying to get more experience with hair. I like it so far, but I would like to add longer scattered light brown colored hairs that match his feet and hands throughout his entire body to give me a scruffy look. I currently have the following set up for the body hair Do I set up another hair system or another hair emitter under this one - or a new material? Or is it even possible to do? Any help would be appreciated - also and suggestions to make the rat better would be appreciated. Thanks - Eric
  12. Thank you John - I actually had version 2006 open - I was able to import it into 2007 - thank you for taking the time to create the file.
  13. Hi John - that's a little better. I downloaded your material.zip but it is in version 14.06 - I can seem to find that download section, just the main download of 14.0 from the support section - can you point me in the direction of the additional smaller downloads? Thank you.
  14. I am in the Technical Reference manual studying the section "Hair Material with Multiple Attributes" page 39. I understand how hair works and how to set up a hair system, but for the character I am working on now I want to step it up a notch. The sample has a hair system with a CellTurb combiner with 2 different colors to give it a great 2 tone more realistic look. I added the Hair system w/ 2 emitters (one grey) and added the cellTurb with 2 attributes - similiar to what they did - orange and brown. The image I have below look nothing like the realistic fur ball in the book... what am I not getting here? Thanks - Eric
  15. That worked perfect thank you - I had used the "shift" attach on a couple and then extruded them, so it ran all the way down the side of the char head - so I detched them like you suggested and reattached then in the right direction. Thank you for taking the time to write the explanation - much appreciated. -E
  16. As you can see I am on my next project and the questions are already rolling in. When I try to add a new cp to the current mesh to extend a line, sometimes the cp is going in the wrong direction so I click on "shift" and it puts it in the right direction. This caused the side of the mesh to have obvious lines running through it as you can see from the pic below. When I detach one of the cps and try to reattach it - it is pointing in the wrong direction again, so I would have to click "shift" to make it correct - but it looks like that is causing the problem. Is there a way to switch the direction or do I have to delete the whole side and start over. I hope I am explaining the problem clearly. Thanks - Eric
  17. Thank you Robert - I now remember doing that on my old computer
  18. Hello - I cannot find the "flip normals" icon - I did a help search from the program, but it just told about it, not where the icon is located. Thank you.
  19. Hi - I am working on a character and remember in the manual somewhere doing something that lined all the cps up along the vertical center so I could mirror the one side of the character more cleanly - can someone let me know how to do that - I can't find it in the book. Thanks - Eric
  20. Thanks guys - it actually only took about 40 hours to create because I used my website design as a template - www.FlashAnimationWebsiteDesign.com Although, that originally took about 100 hours to create ;-) Have a great weekend - Eric
  21. Hi - I recently picked up a couple of 3D jobs, and wanted to thank everyone who answered my several posts to help get the projects completed, your time and help is much appreciated. I was also inspired by Rascular to put together a business website seperate from my website design business for 3D animated characters. Any comments about the site to improve it bad or good would be appreciated. http://www.3dcharacteranimation.biz/ Thank again - Eric
  22. Hey Ken, that worked perfect and didn't cause any other issues. If anyone else is having this problem - I went to this page http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp - it lets you put in exactly what card and windows version you have and gets you to the correct download. Thanks again for your help fixing the problem ;-)
  23. Thanks Ken - I'll give it a try... crossing my fingers. ;-)
