jdunn9999 Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I am putting together a trailer to seek financing for a sci-fi project. These are in a sort of random order for now, until I shoot the talent stuff. Latest shot rendered http://content.clearchannel.com/jdunn/earth/takeoff_wm.wmv crash with Hash suit character http://content.clearchannel.com/jdunn/spacecrash.wmv various Hash shots combined with "real" suits http://www.zombiecult.com/colony.wmv Let me know what you think of this stuff. Jeff Quote
KenH Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Whaa!?!? That's speech extracting stuff. Is that really all AM? The animation looks superb....any motion capture? Lots of potential there. Well done. Edit: Oh ok....what do you mean by real suits? Quote
jdunn9999 Posted June 16, 2005 Author Posted June 16, 2005 Yes, all suits in the last clip listed are costumes on stuntmen in Death Valley. Ironically, the "stunt" of the guy who is thrown from the crash is the Hash animation. All the space shots and creatures are Hash animation. My plan is to shoot actors in the suits with bluescreen and combine the whole thing. I am also building sets for the interiors and will "extend" these with rendered shots. Quote
Bruce Del Porte Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Great stuff, nice compositing! Maybe add a little more orange and soot/smoke to the flames. Big heavy thing that crash also need to maybe move a little more slowly as they disintegrate to get a sense of mass. Overall a some very impressive scenes! Quote
Dearmad Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Good visualization stuff, IMHO. Will help the "unimagintive" money holders see what you're talking about... Gotta say that the colony bit is clearly inspired by Zoic style... you could whip the camera and DOF even faster if you're trying to capture that look. Quote
entity Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 The first one is fantastic, but it's kind of quick at the portion when the 'wormhole'(??) effect begins... the Earth is blotted out... maybe you could fade it in some places so we can still see the planet. You must be reading the minds of every scifi fan out there... good work! Quote
Roughy Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 agree that the warp seems way too fast. and i imagine that crash would have killed that guy, might have him push a button on his arm to expand some sort of mini force field around him to dampen the impact..or something. otherwise, good stuff ^^ Quote
heyvern Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Very nice work. The live footage/cg composites are especially convincing. The only thing that really bothered me was the "shield" effect or wormhole thing. The scale felt way off. I had a sense of a large scale... until that energy field happens... it suddenly made everything feel "small". I don't know exactly how you could fix that. Good luck with your project. Vernon "!" Mr. Jaqe Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Jeff, I saw you were going to use BLUE scree... Well, I head(not sure if it's true) that GREEN screen is s'pose to be better. I have a friend who has been experimenting with blue/green screen and he claims that green is deffinetly better. As for the animation: Whoa... Awsome... Pretty... I feel that words alone can't express what I mean, even with the low res. I really like it! Didn't get the part with the bugs, but it was very neatly put together. Quote
pixelmech Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Excellent work. I agree the scaling is seemingly off in that shot. Something about the size of the ship being so small possibly? Maybe its the camera angle. You've about got those fire/particle effects down - they look great. Good luck with your project! Quote
ddustin Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 What are the Tick like creatures? They seem to be in a dark area, inconsistant with the rest of the shots. Very nice work however. David Quote
jdunn9999 Posted June 20, 2005 Author Posted June 20, 2005 The story concerns a character caught between the "civilized" world, one totally dominated by the "automated" government and run by a brahman class of artificial intelligences who treat humans like second-class citizens, and the "third world" in which he encounters a group of radicals bent on unchecked genetic manipulation. The creatures are the product of our mad-scientist completely losing his connection with humanity. He seeks carbon-form dominance at all costs. I am working, now to increase the mesh-resolution of these and would like to also rp some for character-interaction shots. There are also a number of "transitional" stages which will be a combination of 3-d and traditional makeup appliances. Quote
Roughy Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 somehow...them bugs remind me of Starship Troopers....quality wise as well.. Quote
jdunn9999 Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 So, here is a newer version of the crash in which I have taken some of the suggestions from this list. I have extended the length of the initial shot, added darkness to the fire, and included a secondary explosion to hopefully increase the sense of scale. For this, I used rigid-body dynamics applied to the particle emmitors and the really cool explosion material from the cd. http://content.clearchannel.com/jdunn/spacecrash_b.wmv Quote
KenH Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I think the camera shake is abit too exaggerated. It's hard to tell what's going on. But you might be going for that.... Also, the explosions/fire at the end seem abit too "spritey". They probably need to emit more. Overall though, it's great. Keep it up. Quote
jdunn9999 Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 They are multiplying. These are all constrained to paths with a common walk cycle. Could I do this with flocking? creatures.mov Quote
jdunn9999 Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 Still working on the fire stuff. Thanks, everybody, for the useful suggestions. I have tried another shot with the CGI suit character. After all, Hash is for character animation. This one has a few problems which I can see already, such as the swithching tex on the tank, which I will fix later. I have also not completed the sky as of yet. http://content.clearchannel.com/jdunn/earth/wm_dom.wmv The character's movement, though, seems to have a computer-animation-esque smoothness to it. It is hand-animated, which is fine if everything is going to be that way; But I want to smoothly integrate this stuff with my previously-shot costume footage. I tried applying a BVH file from... http://www.bvhfiles.com/ ...But, AM says "bad choreography file." Has anyone else had luck with BVH files? Quote
modernhorse Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Cool ! I like that you're including music with these. Makes it seem more finished though I gather they're part of a WIP (well, duh they're in the WIP forum). Please tell us more about your production. How long will it be? Are you doing this all yourself? Doug Quote
jdunn9999 Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 My intent is to make a 90 minute film targeted for cable tv. I would like to shoot this in the 720/24p format. I wrote a 15-page treatment which I am now working into a shooting-script with a professional scriptwriter. Once that is complete, I will concentrate on packaging all this into a concise 3-minute trailer, hopefully with a few recognizeable faces, and seek financing. Thus far, I have been doing all of this 3-d stuff myself. Once I have raised more money, I will doubtless have to upgrade my hardware/software into a mid-sized render-farm and would also like to employ additional animators, as much of this production will be animated. I have used 3-d animation in my previous productions, along-side traditional fx... http://www.zombiecult.com/trl/hizcm_trl.wmv Sorry about the early-90s web video. ...but nothing as of yet approaching the extent of animation I will have to create for this production. I am primarily a shooter... http://nemo.phpwebhosting.com/~chilltime/ http://www.bplusproductions.com/movie_grabs/ ...but have been using Hash software for some time and feel confident that this can be done and will look comparable to similarly-budgeted projects (if not better.) Quote
Far Star Productions Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 I have been testing out bvh files as well and they have been working out great for me. I did come across one or two that did not work but I feel they are corrupt from the source and not a issue in AM. Quote
Nosferatu Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 I might be wrong, but in the crash if you have the momentum of the man gradually slow down before stopping it might be more convincing. You did a great job of eliminating float, though. Space ticks might look a little more realistic if when they jump, the legs drop down or trail behind a little more. It would give more of an impression of mass. Positively great work! Quote
jdunn9999 Posted July 15, 2005 Author Posted July 15, 2005 Here is a link to the latest iteration of the dome shot. http://content.clearchannel.com/jdunn/earth/dome3wm.wmv I have tweaked the animation to add a more natural feel. It is consistent with the performance from the actor in the suit, but still looks a little animated. Jeff Quote
kuep Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Are you going to be looking for animators Jeff? and your animations look very cool so far!! Quote
jdunn9999 Posted July 19, 2005 Author Posted July 19, 2005 Yes, eventually I will want to staff this production. It is hard to say, at this point, when that will be, though. Quote
