  1. Hmmm. I guess that shall have to be a mystery then.

Yeah I found a similar link, Peter Mayhew was listed at 500k which seemed a bit low given the amounts those movies have grossed. I was surprised David Prowse was as wealthy as he is, I had heard he was on bad terms with George Lucas and I've never seen him in anything other than Star Wars and Clockwork Orange. I'm not sure what else he's been in but I guess he's managed to do well for himself.

Everyone else listed seems like they've done ok although I doubt their fortunes came from those particular 3 movies. I was surprised Carrie Fisher was listed as high as she was, script doctor must be a profitable profession.

  2.

The best addition for using A:M is a second monitor. When I'm animating it is fabulous to be able to take the PWS and spread it out on a whole screen so I can see lots of key frames without needing to pan around all the time.

Make sure your video card can support two monitors.

Any cheap, used monitor will do but you want it to have the same vertical res as your primary monitor

So lets say I have a monitor with a vertical resolution of 1440 or 1600 pixels, is using a secondary or 3rd monitor limited to 1080 pixels a problem?

I've got a couple older 19" LCDs that I had been planning on setting up to flank my primary display. Although I think the backlight on one is going out :(

  3. I can think of some things I'd like to see:

GPU rendering/acceleration (but I think this has already been noted as being impractical so not going to happen most likely)

Support for massively multi-threaded systems (or do we have this already?)

Some sort of auto-rigging, at least for humanoid/bipedal characters (probably also a moonshot)

How exactly does bullet physics differ from Newton?

  4. Congrats on the $180! I don't remember buying directly from any of the manufacturers for memory until recently and that was ecc mem that you can't always get online.

ATT and Verizon have been sued over erroneous charges on peoples phones. If you figure out how many customers and add a buck or even 20 cents per and not get caught they make huge amounts of money. Then the have the nads to settle out, write off the loss and do it all over again! Most of the consumer confusion and they way they burry the fake charges in is with the fees and taxes. The Gov should have a simple Flat tax / charge that they can then distribute back to the states, towns etc. This would eliminate the confusing list you see on your phone bill.

I've been doing battle with Comcast, they like to suddenly terminate or change a contract I have with them and when I call them out on it they make good buy this is a yearly battle.

Well the beauty of this particular class action suit, was that it wasn't just for individual RAM sticks you may have bought ---- it was for any device that could conceivably have RAM in it. So: cell phones, laptops, mp3 players, etc. So I tallied up all the eligible items that I bought from 1998 to whenever the claim was announced and submitted that.

  5. But we were talking about DRAMS

Well, yeah. But I couldn't think of a good example of "passing along costs" with that industry. Although there aren't a ton of DRAM makers, either. And it isn't readily apparent to the consumer what the breakdown is for their stick of RAM. I remember back in '92 or '93 there was a huge jump in RAM prices because of a fire at some plant that lead to an epoxy shortage, and prices stayed high for a while. Maybe this was an artificial way of inflating prices that had lowered too much due to oversupply? Which lead to this whole class action suit in the first place? Not saying there wasn't actually a factory fire, but the severity and duration of the shortage may have been exaggerated.

  6. It occurs to me that passing a new cost to the consumer should not really be possible in a market economy.

In a free market you are already selling your product for the price that gets the most money out of the buyers.

If you have some new cost like a legal penalty or a raw material cost increase... that's not going to change the appetite of the consumer such that they will start paying more. You pretty much have to swallow the added cost yourself.

    What am I missing?

I think what Pixelplucker is talking about is something along these lines:

If you look at your phone bill you will notice that it is broken down into itemized entries. For instance, Friends and Family Package: $40, Internet Service: $25, Taxes and fees: $5.99, Universal Service Fund: $9.98.

I haven't scrutinized my phone bill in a while since I have unlimited local and long distance, and an unlimited internet plan, but it has at least one or two taxes tacked on along with some sort of USF fee. The government, when they mandated this, meant for the utilities to pay for this infrastructure out of their pockets but they added that charge onto your bill and "passed it along to the consumer". I think that is the type of thing Pixelplucker is referring to.

Phone/internet service isn't really a free market since there are typically only a handful of providers, and costs/barriers to enter that market are high.

At least, this is my understanding of things, I could be wrong (regarding the additional charges on your phone bill).

  7. Hey all I know is I'm $180 richer. I was not required to submit a receipt.

Maybe they will pass the costs onto the consumer, but they tried the "sneaky Pete" route once and got sued. Can I afford to quit working? No. But I've got enough to pay a bill or two or buy a new hard disk or something. I imagine the lawyers made out like bandits, though.

  8. "Lord Hamptonshire missing after self-driving Rolls-Royce dives off pier into Thames"

    Headline from the future.

Given that people have driven their cars into swamps, the ocean, and desolate stretches of the Mojave while following their GPS, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

  9. Has anyone ever bought a digital download copy of Windows 7 or 8 off the internet? I've noticed they are a good bit cheaper than even an OEM DVD. I've got 2 or 3 systems that I want to be able to get onto Win 10 for cheap, and I've seen these downloadable versions for as little as $25-$40 ( I guess they sell you just a license key, and you need the media already?).

How much longer is AM going to run on Windows 7? I have a copy of Win 7 Ultimate that I bought for a dual socket server I built and I am not keen on upgrading that to Win 10 if the standard Win 10 Pro doesn't support multi socket systems. If AM is going to run for another 5 years or so on Win 7 I'm ok but if Hash will be moving to Win 8 and above soon then I don't want to be on an orphaned platform and will need to figure something out.

  10. I still can't find the original website I ran across that had a link to the print ad, but my guess is that since they stressed that "with the removal of the chaffeur you have that much extra legroom" they are probably not appealing to the budget-minded. Or those that do their own shopping. Pretty much anyone that has an income less than a million a year (5 million a year?) is not the target demo for this thing.

But yeah with those goofy wheel shrouds I don't see this thing being able to negotiate anything but the most meticulously maintained of private roads. So maybe it is to get you the 2 miles from your front door to your personal helipad on the sprawling grounds of your private compound?

*EDIT* -- I had the mistaken notion that this was a $200k car. I just did a little Googling and they start at $300k and go on up to $500k. Seeing as how you can get a RR Silver Shadow from the 60s for around $30k, I might be able to afford a Wraith (it is a rather sharp looking car, compared to this) by around 2056? After someone else has taken the 40 years of depreciation, lol.

Maybe I can have a post-retirement career ferrying people around to events. I might look a bit odd in a chaffeur's uniform though.

  11. The augmented reality stuff I think has the potential to be bigger than the VR stuff.   Check out the video below:

My 12 year old self probably would have flipped at the thought of that .

  12. I guess there is so little story to the game it leaves them free to write just about anything.

It's like when they make a move with a famous song title

I suppose. I just don't see what possible sort of story you could write about stacking blocks.

Now a documentary about the guy that wrote the video game would be way more interesting, but I suspect this will be something stupid like giant blocks falling to earth and Rob Schneider is the only one that can save the planet.

  13. I have mixed feelings about Autodesk. 3D Studio 3 was the first actual 3D application I used extensively, and I have some fond memories of that time of my life but AM is going to allow me to finish my film and barring some eventuality where the software was completely unavailable, I'm sticking with it since I'm happy with what I've got.

However, Autodesk hasn't lowered their prices in the 20 odd years it has been since I first started fooling with 3D (has it really been that long...yikes) and I don't think they are going to lower their prices, since they've "borged" most of their competition or eliminated them completely.

Now that they are the 800 pound gorilla in both the CAD and 3D animation markets, I doubt they will. Who is really left these days? Autodesk (3DS Max, Maya), Lightwave, AM and Cinema 4D? Oh and Blender? I think Softimage got bought out by someone, not sure if that was Autodesk or someone else.
