  1. Posting on a break here: some good ideas, I will need to check them out.

I have a couple ideas for things I'd like to try, in the realm of post filters or maybe something that can randomize the "greeblies" you see on a spaceship. Although someone may have already come up with that and I'm just not aware of it.

  2. I'm interested in dabbling in graphics programming, in the hopes that I might some day be able to write my own useful plugins for AM.

For the programmer AM users out there, any recommendations where to start, if you're starting from ground zero basically? I've had math up to Calculus I and II but never really grasped it like I'd have liked, and it's been years since I've done any algebra more complex than x+y=z.

I've written some C programs way back when I was in engineering school but never anything more than 100 or 200 lines, just little utility type things basically. And DOS batch files, if those count.

I don't think I will be jumping super deep into things just yet since I need to make finishing my movie my priority, but I think it might be fun to try.

  3. I've sent my availability to Rob in a pm, M-W-TR-F I can do 10:00 pm to 11:30 pm CST or I could do basically anytime between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Saturday or 10:00 am and 3:00 pm on Sunday. Since it doesn't sound like mornings are likely to be good on weekdays I've modified my availability a bit.

  4. I agree with you, but if you want all this stuff then you need to find some way to raise $1-$5 million to hand to Hash Inc. so that this stuff can be implemented. I believe that there is only one programmer working on AM at this point, and AM is very much in maintenance mode, although we do get some major new features from time to time. And this is not in any way a criticism of what is going on with AM, but when you only have one guy actively working on it, there are only so many features you can spend time on.

  5. As someone who is running AM with 20 gig of RAM right now, I don't think there is any point at all in going past 32, and the sweet spot is probably between 8-16 gigabytes. Would AM use the extra RAM? Yes, but I think you'd be hard pressed to model a scene that would use that much data. If I recall correctly, the hash patches are much more frugal with resources than an equivalent model made of polygons would be. Rob, how large was the largest scene in TWO? As a feature length project, that might be a good yardstick for people wanting to "stress test" AM.

  6. Sadly, we've just come to that time in our lives when the people we remember from our youth are aging and dying. Last year was really tough for us Star Trek fans. We lost 23 Trek related souls (including Leonard Nimoy and Grace Lee Whitney ...and Nichelle Nichols had a stroke.)

I remember looking up the Births/Deaths for 1986 (the year I graduated HS) and being floored by the number of high profile deaths (Cary Grant, Jimmy Cagney, Donna Reed, Frank Herbert, Ray Milland, Otto Preminger, Howard da Silva, Broderick Crawford, Georgia O'Keefe, Gordon MacRae, Wallis Simpson, Robert Alda, Alan Jay Lerner, Sterling Hayden, Benny Goodman, Marlin Perkins, Kate Smith, Rudy Vallee, Murray Hamilton, Dar Robinson, Vincent Minnelli, Ted Knight, Frank Nelson, Hal B. Wallis, Keenan Wynn, Forrest Tucker, Paul Frees, Roger C. Carmel, Jerry Colonna, Scatman Crothers, Desi Arnaz, Elsa Lanchester, and Lloyd Haynes.)

We've certainly had more high profile people die in a single year, but it's happening to "our" people now.

I suppose when you think about it like that, it is inevitable. Doesn't make it easier. I mean, I of course never knew Carrie Fisher personally or even met her at a convention or anything, but you get to feel like you know a person through their body of work. And 60 is just too damn young. These other untimely deaths are also rattling me because I'm much closer to them in age, I think that has something to do with it as well.

  7. Does anyone know if there is any way to run iOS apps on an Android device? I've been contemplating a phone upgrade but cannot justify an iPhone 7 when there are Android phones in the $200 range that have competitive features. My problem is that I have a couple apps that I would hate not being able to use any more. Just wondered if there is any way to do this, as it might solve my problems.

  8. That's disappointing. Part of the reason I bought my 480 was for compute, disappointed now that I can only use it for single-point precision FP. I couldn't afford to spend double on a graphics card for the same functionality.
