Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 18, 2015 Hash Fellow Posted August 18, 2015 Three talented winners of the Insect Image Contest will be awarded a medal for their achievement. That means there needs to be a medal!Currently the plan is to 3D print the prototype, create a mold and cast it in actual metal of some sort.First draft of a design for the Award Medal. Additional suggestions welcome, of course Quote
John Bigboote Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 That's quite an ambitious award! I like the design, needs say 'Hash' or 'A:M' somewhere's... what is the translation for us who are not up on our latin? Quote

I like the design, needs say 'Hash' or 'A:M' somewhere's That will definitely get in there. I'm thinking something like ANIMATION:MASTER INSECT IMAGE CONTEST would circle around the edge. ... what is the translation for us who are not up on our latin? e panni, elegantia... from patches, elegance Quote
Admin Rodney Posted August 18, 2015 Admin Posted August 18, 2015 ANIMATION:MASTER INSECT IMAGE CONTEST If you drop the 'insect' in there the same mold can be used for future contests. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 18, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted August 18, 2015 If you drop the 'insect' in there the same mold can be used for future contests. But then there is still the giant ant in the monitor... None-the-less, I haven't decided yet whether this should be a universal design or something specific and unique. Quote
Admin Rodney Posted August 18, 2015 Admin Posted August 18, 2015 But then there is still the giant ant in the monitor... I suppose that could be a 'tip-o-the-hat' to the first contest that gave out a medal? Quote
John Bigboote Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 What a great idea... to actually give out a medal of honor! I can't wait to get mine(He says as he thrusts-out his chest, boastingly!) Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 21, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted August 21, 2015 But then there is still the giant ant in the monitor... I suppose that could be a 'tip-o-the-hat' to the first contest that gave out a medal? Or... every future contest could be an "Insect" contest. Problem solved! Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 21, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted August 21, 2015 Mock-up of some elements to test the placement. This is only a test... Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 21, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted August 21, 2015 Arrangement to allow for a hole at the top to put a ribbon through... Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 22, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted August 22, 2015 First experiment with creating low-relief, forced perspective sculpture... Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted August 24, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted August 24, 2015 There isn't much room to move things in front of other things to suggest depth in a low-relief sculpture. Everything is really on the same level which creates unattractive intersections in overlapping shapes. To try to make the monitor frame appear to be behind the oval (the ant head) I make some cuts in it and slope it down to the background level before it contacts the oval. Quote
nemyax Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 So far it looks more like ab ovo than e panni =) Quote
Admin Rodney Posted August 24, 2015 Admin Posted August 24, 2015 Has a bouncing ball (through a window) look to it at present. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted September 2, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted September 2, 2015 Here is an example of the work Ken Citron (pixelplucker) has done with casting medals from 3D-printed models. On left is the fresh pewter, on the right is an antiqued version. Quote
itsjustme Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 I like the antiqued pewter...very nice! Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted September 27, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted September 27, 2015 Here is an experiment by Ken on bronzing a scrap of pewter... Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted October 3, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted October 3, 2015 To better understand the capabilities of the 3D printer I made this sample model that has small variations on shapes and sizes and slopes and angles... ... and I sent that to Ken. Ken's printer uses a liquid resin that is cured in place by laser beams. Ken printed it out using the finest detail possible. It took nine hours to "render" but the result is quite promising. The spotting and ripples that appear are on the back, not on the modeled surface side, and get sanded off before the two halves are joined together. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted October 20, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted October 20, 2015 Ken reports some new success in bronzing pewter, which has turned out to be trickier than anticipated... Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted November 9, 2015 Author Hash Fellow Posted November 9, 2015 The reverse of the medal will have a spot to personalize the winner's name and place. Thumbnails of possible designs... Any preferences? Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted February 10, 2016 Author Hash Fellow Posted February 10, 2016 It looks like a 3D scroll... But it's really just a low-relief sculpture! This is the "reverse" of the award medal, where the winner's name will be laser-zapped. It took me a long time to wrap my mind around how to make that 2D design work in splines but now it think I've got it. Still need to find a better font for the text. Quote
itsjustme Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 That is going to be a very nice looking medal, Robert! Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted July 6, 2016 Author Hash Fellow Posted July 6, 2016 It's real close now... 1 Quote
John Bigboote Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 WAY COOL! Forgive my roman ignorance--- what is MMXV, the year? Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted July 7, 2016 Author Hash Fellow Posted July 7, 2016 WAY COOL! Forgive my roman ignorance--- what is MMXV, the year? Yes, Roman numerals. We could Arabic numerals if the Roman numerals were too pretentious. You're the one who has to wear it, of course. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted July 7, 2016 Author Hash Fellow Posted July 7, 2016 Here's an interesting puzzle... notice how "FORUM" is shaped differently in the last two pictures, even though I haven't changed anything about that piece of text. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted June 13, 2017 Author Hash Fellow Posted June 13, 2017 For anyone following this thread... It did get done! Quote
