It's Real now!

Hey guys, remember that incredibles rip off I made over the summer?

Well even if not, I had a model produced and painted over the summer but for some reason or

another I never got around to posting.

I built this in A:M, no duh!

And had to export it and save as an stl file.... which was not as easy as you might think.

I wound up using a box modeller app to seal up the geometry and save as an stl.

Okay, cool! Now this is seems a bit of first... you've actually taken a character designed in Animation Master and had it made into an actual figurine/toy. Could you tell us about how it was done? It looks like molded plastic... who did it for you, what process did they use and how much did it cost? Are there thousands on their way by freighter from Taiwan? Really neat... need details.

You know....

...that paneling is so 60's... you should really think about updating your wall treatments.

;)

p.s. Gorgeous model! Very glossy! Like a new car... if you look real close you can see the fan bones.

Aw, you can tell it's cg because it has that same plastic look all over. ;)

No, really, that looks great! I guess the next step is to get them to make those in flexible plastic with an armature inside so you could animate it.

What's a "box modeler"?

Care to reveal the cost of a one-off model?

Hey guys, thanks for checking it out!

And for the comments too, especially about the wood paneling on my walls VERN!

Anyhows, about the model

1.Hash - to Silo(box modeller) sealed up the mesh, exported as .stl file.

2. Sent to a company http://www.vaupell.com/ for the production and painting. They built it from

a resin, not like the stuff from 3darttopart. this is more of a plastic than a plaster.

3. sent back to me where it sits proudly on my desk and I show it to potential clients mostly as a look what

else I can.

As far as pricing.... it is expensive, and it is a tax write off for me. But to get this made, 4.5 inches tall...

painted 5 colors and a clear coat..... expect to go well over $600.00.

Now if I wanted to mass produce this.... one would need to get a mold made - carved into metal. In the US that would probably cost about $25k. In china probably cost about $6K. Then you would need a plastic molding injection company from china to take the mold and create and paint the models and at that point we are looking well about and beyond $25,000.00 for the bare minimum production values.

Oh boy, so at this point, Inc.Guy won't have too many pals.

Mike!

Very cool....

There are other ways to do this I'm sure... I just don't know what they are.

I do know this... You could have the now existing model duplicated in wood for less... pick your wood... Walnut burl, manzanita root, teak, oak... whatever

That model looks fantastic. For some reason I love the spot on his back where the arm bulge meets his torso... I don't know why... that spot just... looks good, it appealed to my aesthetic sense of form for some reason.

--------------------------

I actually talked to a company about a year ago about creating plastic parts from 3D for a little project I have in mind.

The cost was NOT prohibitive at all... I could get a prototype for less than a couple hundred bucks. And the material was a good long lasting kind of plastic.. stuff. Basically they did the same kind of thing but created cheaper reusable molds from the original output that were cheaper to produce (not metal). The molds would cost extra... or I could just do "one offs" since I wouldn't need so many.

What I have in mind is to create the working internal elements of a Rubik's Cube in plastic from my 3D files, that can be used as a base for "snapping in" or gluing hand carved wooden surface "tiles" for a large "executive" style Rubik's Cube suitable for display... fully functional of course.

The company I talked to would allow me to order as many or as few of these elements as needed. I would save money by cutting out, trimming and assembling the parts myself.

I had originally planned to make the whole thing from wood, keeping with the hand crafted art motif... but it was way too much work and I was concerned that the wood would swell and shrink preventing full function... plus it needs lubrication inside for smooth motion... not sure if wood would hold up.

Wow, great job! It's bound to do its job and impress potential customers.

I have a question about the export. How did you deal with the file size and detail in the conversion between .mdl to .3ds to .stl. I tried to convert a complex model of mine from .mdl to .3ds to .iges and the file's final size was huge. So large in fact that it crashed the computer of the company I want to work with.
