working on an over head shot where lightning flashes across and down

 

thought I's try using render as lines

 

 

this is the first draft of that idea

 

looking for suggestions the scene will also have storms clouds and rain

Looks cool! though, you might want the lightning to happen a bit faster and maybe a bit more jagged. I look forward to your final scene! :D

Hi two things make the effect of lightning.

One it occurs virtually instantaneously - it's there and then it's not, it doesn't grow down, and the biggest visual cue is the lighting flash that accompanies it, creating a stark bright illumination of the clouds and ground, also you probably want to add glow.

Well I played with the lightning and added some "lights" to it

 

I set up a simple mocked city under the bolt and here is what I got

I think that the lightning, towards it end, should be slimmer. Other than that, it's looking good to me.

If you watch video clips of lightning, you'll notice that lightning actually doesn't move much, if at all.

Actually, that web site has some pretty interesting clips of lightning flashes. I'd suggest downloading some and studing them frame by frame. It might help in creating something a little more realistic.
