*A:M User* Roger Posted January 19, 2012 *A:M User* Share Posted January 19, 2012 Does anyone else think that the people that run the country have lost their damn minds? I ran across this this morning: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/20...=1#comments-bar Anyone that enjoys access to public domain works, or makes adaptations of them (TWO falls squarely under this) should be concerned. I don't know the in-depth details of SOPA but my basic understanding is that if someone decides you are hosting copyrighted content, they can prevent DNS from functioning correctly for your site, effectively removing it from the internet. Shouldn't these jokers be more worried about our damn country going bankrupt than appeasing a small number of people in Hollywood and the music business? Admin Rodney Posted January 19, 2012 Admin Share Posted January 19, 2012 I'd like to have an opinion on this but its apparently been bringing out the nuts on all sides of the equation. I don't think people actually expect SOPA will be implemented (or if it is that it'll be in any way effective) but someone sure is using it as a platform to get their agendas raised. I'll assume you weren't referring to me I'll admit, this doesn't have affect me directly at this point, as I'm not earning my living from my art. I do think priorities are a little out of whack in Congress when we're looking at an official unemployment rate of 10% and an unofficial rate that is probably much higher. Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted January 19, 2012 Hash Fellow Share Posted January 19, 2012 SOPA will go back to the drawing board. They'll need to find a way to distinguish between the people who are putting whole movies on the internet the first day they are in theaters and the people who are just dancing in their living room to Croatian boy bands. Before the electronic age it was easy to say copyrights were absolute because it was so hard to copy things that if anyone did it was probably a pretty egregious amount of copying. But now copying has become so easy it has become like jaywalking; most of it doesn't hurt anyone but how do you draw the line between the people who are a real problem and the ones who are not? The SC ruling which is a bit different matter is pretty much set in stone now. The constitution says Congress can set any "limited" term they want and the SC has decided that anything short of infinite qualifies and that Congress can set it and reset it anyhow they want. If we want shorter copyright terms we'll have to convince a Congress to make them shorter. But if you own a copyright, it's good news; it's yours for a long, long time.
