tbenefi33 Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 I'm looking to get a large format printer I've been eye balling the hp2600 11'x17' or the epson 1280 13'x19" for making prints. What type of printer would you recommend for making prints ? Quote
Darkwing Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Well, I've never owned or operated anything like that, however I have owned both an HP and now currently an Epson printer (just your regular consumer model). The Epson is the better printer IMO, the HP was an ink guzzler and was always having tech and connectivity issues. Quote
Fuchur Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Well, I've never owned or operated anything like that, however I have owned both an HP and now currently an Epson printer (just your regular consumer model). The Epson is the better printer IMO, the HP was an ink guzzler and was always having tech and connectivity issues. Had the same with Epson, Canon, Konica, HP... it is really not the brand you should look at but the printer modell. I only can say something about A3(+)-printers (since we dont own a bigger one here). The best one till now was the HP Pixma ix7000 for that... it has good connectivity (direct network-access, etc.) and is very reliable.... (prints each time you send something, which is really not always what you get) and does it in a good quality... however the ink is not that inexpensive... anyway if you can live with that, it is a good choice. if you dont need it to be accessable directly by the LAN there are others which will do good too... but dont try to use a print-server... that is really an annoying little piece... always makes trouble... if you can, get a priinter which is able to communicate directly with the network.... I tend to use HP nowadays (my OfficeJet 8500 pro is a very nice printer... even the ink is not expensive, it prints fast, and with a good quality, etc. but it is not a A3 or larger printer...) See you *Fuchur* Quote
Darkwing Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Most interesting. I would say my two printers were about roughly equivalent models, but it just goes to show, you really have to read a lot about the individual printer you're trying to buy. Like I said, I couldn't ever get my HP to connect to my computer and then when I bought my Mac it just wouldn't connect to that, even though it was supposed to. So my advice, do lots and lots of reading on the printers you're comparing. Look at consumer reviews, lots of them (be careful, some claim to be consumer reviews when in fact they're people who either work for HP or Epson or whatever) but yeah. Do lots of research! One of the downfalls of my Epson is that if one cartridge gets to the point of it thinking its empty, it won't allow you to print anything, colour or black and white, until you replace that cartridge. Pure money grab there considering the cartridge is still usable most of the time. Quote
Hash Fellow robcat2075 Posted December 6, 2011 Hash Fellow Posted December 6, 2011 I'm sick of printers. I used to have a large format Epson. It seems like the larger your page is the more chance a print will be marred by some misbehavior like a clogged jet or slight misalignment of a head pass. They all seem to need to be used rather frequently or the head gets clogged and needs to have a lot of ink used up "cleaning" it. You might consider how often you really need the large format. Making the occasional large print at the drugstore or via a web vendor might be more economical in the long run. Quote
tbenefi33 Posted December 7, 2011 Author Posted December 7, 2011 Thank yall for the input greatly appreciated I'll check the reviews on the printer, sucks getting old can't make up my mind....lol Quote
fae_alba Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 back when I did publishing, I had a large format HP (11x17) that I used to print proofs. I cranked a lot of paper thru it with no complaints. I wouldn't use to try and do photo quality work, you wouldn't be able to afford the ink. I had an epson to do dye sublimation printing (heat transfer). Didn't really like the epson, but that had a lot to do with the specialty ink drying up and clogging the print heads constantly. But for me, HP is the better printer. Quote
