Excellent Animation about Geometry in Nature

Stumbled across this amazing little film about Geometry in Nature. What the ancients used to call sacred geometry. Only 3 minutes long but packed.

This guy does a beautiful job of tying everything together.

In building the Nautilus shell, do you think he rendered everything and then used a mask to reveal things in sequence?

I have often thought it would be totally cool if we could get Sweeper to be an animatable tool. Plug in your requests and then ask the software to build the "sweep" over time (that the user defines). Pull that file into the choreography and then film the model building itself over time from any angle you want.

That seems like it would be pretty magical...

Hope you enjoy this guys film...

He explains the process of building the shell here. Nothing automatic about it - very labor intensive, very wonderful.

Gorgeous film. And equally fascinating is exploring the website especially the theory here

and the explanation of WIP in general

I LOVE the presentation! It packs a ton of information into three and a half minutes with no dialog and only minimal text. Brilliant.

Thanks for sharing this.

I asked Yves about the golden ration a few years ago as I perceived a flaw in how it was being interpreted.

He was fond of it.

It's interesting the artist/animator in this case has this to say about how he fudged his numbers to make them work regarding the nautilus:

IMPORTANT NOTE: while watching the animation conveys the idea that the Fibonacci spiral (or the Golden Spiral, it doesn't matter) is on the origin of the shape of a Nautilus, this isn't absolutely right.

It's funny because if you perform this search at Google Images: “spiral + nautilus” you will see how many images suggest that this shell is really based on the construction system described above.

But this isn't correct, as it's outlined on this other page.

The truth is that this is something I discovered when I had completely finished the screenplay for this project and I was too lazy to change. Therefore I must confess that I did a kind of cheat with this animation. Or you could explain in a more "genteel" way, saying that I have taken an artistic license ;-)

He goes into more detail here: Fibonautilus

I appreciate his honesty. It helps in better understanding the golden ratio and other useful constructs.

It certainly produces beautiful patterns in geometry.

I perceive the artist's error began when he started with 1+1. After that all of his numbers were progressively off.

He can't really be faulted as he had to start with something.
